Basketball opens with a 63-55 win over Western Michigan.  After Redcast started working (@$&^!!), the defense looked extremely aggressive with 8 steals and 13(!) blocks.  Biggest surprise was Freshman Nolan Cressler with 20 points in his debut.

Cressler seems to be that Whittman-like pure shooter that the team has been missing since Ryan left. Courtney was quoted as saying that earlier in the week in practice he went 11-12.

Not to jump to conclusions, but boy did his shot look similar to Wittman's -- lightning-quick release, and just great form.  Looks like a player in all respects.

Not sure I want to compare him to Ryan quite yet, but Cressler did hit a huge late game shot.  WMU had cut a 12 point lead down to 5 with a minute and change left.  Cressler hit a three pointer to stem the momentum.  Not something you expect from a guy in his collegiate debut.

Bona game tonight is on NBCSports at 7.  The Bonnies should not be as good as they were last year, but they will be a solid A-10 team.  A great opportunity for the Big Red.

Thanks! Court looks great in HD.

The court is about the only thing that looks great, our offense is terrible, no plan at all

Terrible first half by Cornell. We're lucky Bonnies haven't played much better.

funny to see a commercial on Tv for Cornell, looks like it was made 10 years ago

It's been quiet on this little section of elynah.  Since the last post, the Red dropped a winnable game to St. Peters, were blasted by Wisconsin, gave away a first half lead against Arizona St. (23 turnovers), blew out a dreadful Presbyterian, and held on to beat a very poor Longwood team.  Beating Presby and Longwood apparently counts as a tournament win of Continental Tire blah, blah, blah subregional.  The Cornell website has a picture of the team posing with the winner's trophy (and they couldn't get a picture from MSG?).

Overall, the team is actually pretty good defensively (yesterday's second half notwithstanding).  The problem is they just have trouble scoring.  The attack is balanced -- six different players have lead the team in scoring -- but that is also a sign of a lack of consistency.  Freshman Nolan Cressler has been playing well and is the closest thing the team has to a three point shooter.  Of the other newcomers, Bunce is apparently injured, Harmon has gotten a couple of cameos and Mischler was always supposed to be a bit of a project.

Two winnable home games come up before exams.  Then a five game road trip to Vandy, Duke, BU, St. Francis, and Bingo.  7-7 at the New Year has to be the goal.
