I'd love to see a list of the top players alltime by goals-per-game.  That would give a pretty good indicator of players from all eras (the absolute numbers favor modern players with long seasons).  The IHDB can't handle that -- anybody know a good online hockey resource that can?

Well, for what it is worth, my friend of a friend that is an NHL official once commented spontaneously over a few beers that Mario could have easily been better than the Great One if he'd had any sort of work ethic.

As I'm in the middle of reading Home Game right now, I have to wonder if Dryden is right in saying that guys that come from working class families are hungrier and simply want it more.

Work is no longer an excuse to live near an ECACHL team... :(

Dryden is absolutely right!  Most of the great all time players fit that mold.

But I'm not sure what is meant by Mario lacking a work ethic....since when?

GOAL!!

Nieuwy Scored at 11:18 of the 1st period, unassisted.

We're gonna beat the hell out of you...

Looking at the list, being just the 32nd player to score 500 or more goals puts Joe in pretty rare company.  It's something very special and something to cherish.  Congratulations!!  And who knows, the legs may have enough to get him into the high 20s or better on the list.

My sick twisted ECAC driven mind really likes the penalty Nieuwy got in the third for roughing Erik Cole. Did anyone see this play? I picked it up on the ESPN box score page.

Congrats on 500, Joe!

LOL.  Personally, I rather enjoyed Joe knocking out Paul Kariya's teeth a few years ago.  Take that, Hockey East.  :-P

Joe is closing in on Joe Mullen's "ECAC" record of 502 NHL goals.  [Yes, BC was in the ECAC way back then.]

I thought Joey Mullen played for some Hell's Kitchen juniors team; had no idea he went to BC.

Other ECACers in the top 100 (from my memory, mileage may vary):

#56 431 Dave Taylor (Clarkson)
#69 408 Ray Ferraro (UConn, ECAC D-3?)
#94 363 Tony Amonte (BU, maybe before the Divorce)

And other ECACers in the top 1000, among active players:

#109 352 John LeClair (Vermont)
#120 331 Adam Oates (RPI)
#516 148 Joe Juneau (RPI)
#542 143 Ted Donato (either Harvard or BU I forget)
#632 125 Todd Marchant (Clarkson)
#780 100 Craig Conroy (Clarkson)

Amonte played at BU after the divorce; Donato played at Harvard.

Aren't they the same?:-P

All of the above, IIRC.

Here's what I was thinking of -- one of my favorite hockey stats ever.

1974-75 NY Metropolitan Jr Hockey Association

Joe Mullen (NY Westsiders) 110-72-182 in 40 games!

The *most* fun hockey stat is a roller hockey stat: Rocco Miano (MPCA) led the MPRHL Mites Division in scoring in 1998-99 with 112 goals in 13 games.

Interestingly, when Joe scored 51 goals in his second year in the NHL, he tied for leading goal scorer on the Flames...with Joe Mullen.

Ray Ferraro did not play at UConn.  That was Todd Krygier you're probably thinking of.  Ferraro is a Trail Smoke Eater.
