QuoteTwo important results went against Cornell's chances for an autobid this weekend:

Matt, you mean "at-large" bid, right?

There are about seven schools, including Cornell, vying for what amounts to a measly two available at-large spots (Virginia, Hopkins, and Syracuse are locks for three, leaving only two (thanks to this "western" crap!!!)).

It's absurd to have a separate "western bid" just because the "western league" is sending (via AQ) their one school that happens to be technically not from the "western region".  Would it be too much to ask that the committee grow a pair and override that stupid, out-dated regionalization rule so that the "Fairfield technicality" doesn't shrink an already outrageously skimpy at-large pool?!

The AQ from the WESTERN league should be the WESTERN region's representative.  Period!  If ya ain't from the west, you don't belong in the western league!  And if yer somehow(?!?!) allowed to be in there ANYWAY, then you should be counted as WESTERN!!!  AAAAAARRRRGGGHH...  :-(

OK...  I feel better now... (momentarily, at least...)

There is some chance the NCAA committee will decide the Great Western league's champion is the "western" team.  Selection committees sometimes just do what they have to do to make it come out right.

Like, say, ignore the tournament bracket laid out in the championships manual?

...Or, change the manual itself!  ...Which is apparently what they've just done!  In a stunning stroke of common sense (albeit sneaky and a little late in the game), "the committee" has dumped the obsolete regional bids.  It's just too bad that they had to wait until people were tearing their hair out over it to act.  Why couldn't they have asked themselves, before the season even began, "Uh-oh, what if Fairfield wins the GWLL?!"  'Tards.  ::rolleyes::

The bottom line is that this gives 6 at-large spots instead of 5, thus improving the Big Red's chances of making the tournament.  :-)

Common sense prevails!!:-)

Seems to me with just 12 slots there were too many "interests" being served by AQs, regional bids, and at-large bids.  Score one for the NCAA in making this right.

Incidentally, Jason N '95 introduced himself to Lowell and me at the game.  He arrived at halftime, so we're pretty sure it's all his fault.  :`(

I'd refute Beeeej's claim if I didn't feel it was true. A doctor's appointment that ran long and a slower than expected drive due to the heavy rain kept me from seeing the "give-n-take" first half. Found seats just in time for the third quarter --which was just awful to watch. Thankfully the fourth had some nice scoring by Cornell, albeit in vain.  At least I got to introduce myself to some of the other ELFers.  Beeeej, it was good to meet you and hopefully our next cornell sporting event in which we cross paths will be a "W" for the Big Red.

FWIW, lax.com has posted a play-by-play game story (with 25 pics):
