I would suggest 79 to 81 to 17 to 84 to 9 to 95. In good weather, going via 17 is faster than going straight down to 84 via 380. Rt 9 in CT is a good road (divided highway with a 65 mph limit for most of it) and it puts you onto 95 well east of the traffic nightmare that is New Haven.

Heck NO!!!
Route 17 is the worst road known to man.  lots of cops, windy roads, 55 MPH the whole way.  81 south into PA is a much better way to get to 84.

Take it from someone who has made the trip via 17 to CT about 100 times and never gotten a ticket while never going anywhere near 55 -- there aren't that many cops and as long as you are alert (having a good radar detector helps too), you'll be fine. Besides, the curves make it fun!

Going the way I suggested, I would routinely make it from Ithaca to Hartford in four hours flat, and I don't even drive that fast...;-)

Via 17, Ithaca to Hartford is 280 miles
VIa 81/380, Ithaca to Hartford is 297 miles

Well, If you drive above 55, dont have a radar detector, and dont know the road well enough to know the curves in advance, take 81 south, its very direct and very fast.
PS - There are alot of cops, and state troopers here use laser guns, so besides a radar detector, youd better have a laser jammer on your license plates if you drive fast

I just drove Ithaca to Providence, two weekends ago. I took southern 17 to 95 route over and northern Mass 90 route back. They were almost identical timewise for me, about 5.5 hours, since you can travel a bit faster on 90 at night. Since 17 is not limited access it has some scary locals that pull out of the few side streets right in front of you. This route does have more to see if you are into driving and not just getting there.

Yes, from Ithaca, 79E to 206 to 88 to 90 to 87/90 (take the southern loop around Albany, it's quicker) 90 to the Pike, off at 146 to Providence. 5hrs. Why are people sending you to Hartford?

dadeo

We are sending them to Hartford because I do not think it is wise to go north just to have to go south again.  Providence is lattitudely alligned south of Binghamton, so to go north an hour, when Providence is southeast of Ithaca is silly.  If you go south and then travel straight east on 84/95 it is a more direct route.  Got all that ;-)

Except that I95 between New Haven and the CT/RI line is a rolling parking lot on the weekend.  Plus construction in Bridgeport makes the section west of New Haven a bitch as well.

Anyway, I posted 4 different options from Ithaca to Providence about 6 weeks ago on this very forum.

Since posting those 4 choices, I can say that the US44/CT101/US6 drive takes you through a very pretty part of rural eastern Connecticut.
