Shorts Tradition?

Is there some sort of Hockey tradition that players wear the same shorts year after year with no repairs?  Some of the Big Red shorts (or whatever those are actually called) have big tears  and rips...I'm sure Cornell would buy them new ones if they wanted it.

Pegararo's and Carefoot's are particularly ripped...looked like something that might have been salvaged from the trash after dogs played tug-of-war with them.  There was a big triangular tear (showing white pad through the red) in the front and a six inch rip up the back of one.  Several players sport holes through the red fabric that show the pads.  

There must be some reason they keep playing in them.   ::help::

they intentionally rip their shorts, at least the seam on their inners legs, so they can move their legs faster

actually... most hockey pants come with zippers down the inner thighs so the ripping isn't necessary

First off... they're pants.  At first I thought you were talking about warmup shorts or even boxers.

I slice the inner seam on my pants for two reasons.  One, so I have more mobility, especially when doing the splits.  Two, so I can put my skates on before my pants.  Most players put their skates on after their pants though.

It takes a LONG time to wear in equipment.  When you see torn up pants and gloves, it means they are in their prime.  It's when pieces start falling off that you worry.

When I played, I used my old goalie pants and just wore Red Shells.  Picture clown shorts.  They just go over the pants and you can get any color.  This hid all the rips and tears, and let me match the team.  Each player is finicky, but the coaches dare not force anyone to make unnecessary changes to their equipment.

Thanks for the information (I should have known they were pants...but they stop at the knee).  I can certainly understand the "But they are just getting comfortable" explanation.  They do look a tad sloppy, though.  In past seasons I never noticed it this early in the season, plus some of the pants are in particularly bad shape this year.  

Hey, whatever helps them...I've often thought that our pants looked more beat up than other teams...must be one of the reasons we win...function over style anyday.

As a side note, the team is now wearing mostly Bauer equipment versus prior years' CCM stuff.  Maybe a new equipment deal??

Another side note:  even looking at the fuzzy webcast video, it was clear a number of the MSU players were wearing very ratty-looking "shorts."
