From the Globe & Mail:

"If there were to be an agreement, say January '06, we would have a draft shortly after that time so that we'd have it prior to June '06 when the next draft is," Bonello said Wednesday. "In other words, we would be very anxious to get a draft in so we don't miss it if that is the case."

Frank Bonello is the director of NHL Central Scouting, so it's safe to say that one of the many questions has been answered.

January '06?  Is he implying that we might lose two full seasons?  Forgive me if this is old news.... I just stopped following the NHL completely.

It is more than likely that the NHL will lose two seasons.  It is very hopeful to think there will be any season this year, but the fact that both sides are so far apart and not even negotiating indicates that we are a ways away from any sort of resolution.  Expect two seasons to be lost.  Hope for only one.

Bonello, speaking for the NHL, must say that to scare the players and confirm how resolute the owners are.  This in no way represents what actually will happen, just part of the psychological campaign to get players to become very worried.

IMHO, they'll be a deal fairly favorable to the owners by mid-February.

Bonello doesn't really work for the NHL.  He is the director for Central Scouting, which is an independent firm that is endorsed and subscribed to by the NHL and the PA.  He has no reason to lie about this as the draft is not partial to the players or the owners.  He and Central Scouting are totally objective in this situation and are just kind of caught in the middle of it.

QuoteIn it’s 29th year of operation, NHL Central Scouting was established prior to the 1975-76 season as a service for the NHL member clubs. Today, along with the Director of Central Scouting Frank Bonello, the department consists of two staff at the NHL Offices in Toronto, along with nine full-time scouts, and six part-time scouts throughout North America.
