College Sports Television, the first 24-hour college sports network, has committed to a Friday night national game of the week, a first for college hockey. According to CSTV, 20-25 games will be aired this coming season, plus more on tape delay throughout the course of the week.

According to CSTV, the game of the week package will include coverage of "the 'best of the best' of college hockey, including the Central Collegiate Hockey Association and the Hockey East Association, and featuring powerhouse men?s and women?s teams such as two-time men?s defending national champion Minnesota, Cornell, Boston College, New Hampshire, Notre Dame, Michigan, Michigan State and Boston University."

The CSTV site includes a direct email server to your local cable affiliate, tagged to your zip code.  I'm sure now that Cox Communications has one email from a college hockey fan they'll fall all over themselves to put it on their lineup, but... what the hell.

Well, that makes up my mind. I've been dragging my feet on ordering DirecTV for our new house. CSTV is one of the stations in their Sports Pack. Throw in the regional sports stations that make up the pack that have typically carried college hockey and this is too irresistable.

Greg,

What's your zip code?  I already have DirecTV so why not request Portland?  :)

CSTV's ice hockey schedule for the rest of the season is now available (go to: http://www.uscho.com/news/2003/11/11_007255.php ). No additional games for Cornell other than the possibility of being in the ECAC final, which CSTV will be airing. That almost makes me think that the ECAC final will not be on Empire or NESN like it has in the past.

My biggest gripe with their schedule is that it looks like they picked games thinking that they were college football contests. The worst offense is how many times Michigan has been featured. And, come on, Air Force at Army? I'm a supporter of the service academies (my brother-in-law is at West Point), but putting that game on tv over some of the others available that night is clearly not done with college hockey fans' interests in mind. (On second thought, that's not even a good football matchup anymore.)

They're probably looking to broaden their fan base and add more subscribers.

Robb, my days in the 97xxx are over.  I'm a 20xxx'er now.

Well, considering that I asked that question in June, I don't feel too bad - I guess I'm not the only one who's behind!   ::nut::

Fair enough; I'll admit that my complaint is in part due to my sourness about the "haves" (i.e., D-I football powerhouses) getting an inordinate number of the televised games at the expense of other strong hockey programs.
