A very large banner

Check out this ridiculously large banner I made. I was hankering for a creative outlet, and figured that making a nice, big banner to cheer on the Red with would be a good way to satisfy that.

After I was already in the thick of making this one, I realized that it might have been better to make a "Let's Go Red" banner instead. I'm not against the idea and may end up doing that eventually (though I have to say that this one ended up being much more time consuming and much more of a pain in the ass than I thought it would be, but it still managed to be enjoyable to make, all the same). Let me know if anyone has any white or red bed sheets to contribute to the cause. I could conceivably even be induced to make banners or flags (think a large white C on a red background, for example) for people if they supply the materials and I'm feeling extra crazy.

Anyway, I think the banner will make its debut at the MSG game in November (and it will hopefully be the first of many CU sporting events it goes to). Keep an eye out for it, though it won't be hard to miss.

(Hopefully, linking to the picture hosted at flickr won't break...)

Your support of Cornell surpasses that of many who've given entire buildings. Too bad there wasn't room for a drop down "Screw BU" flap.

I applaud your extremely accurate thread title.

I was just thinking that Samuel L. himself couldn't have come up with a better title.

I am sick and tired of these MF banners blocking my MF view!

how did you make it? Is it paint on a sheet or did you sew the letters...?

This is how I made it:

1. Found a cool font on the internet.
2. Whipped up the design in The GIMP (an open source equivalent of PhotoShop).
3. Printed out the design spread across 11"x17" sheets of paper in PosteRazor, a shareware program that takes an image and prints it out in the dimensions you specify.
4. Transferred the design from the sheets of paper to the bed sheet.
5. Filled in the lines using red exterior house paint and black permanent marker.

Steps 1 through 3 were very easy, but steps 4 and 5 were a pain in the ass. Throughout it I wondered whether it would be easier to go with cutting out pieces of fabric instead, but then there's the issue of sewing the fabric pieces to the background (not to mention the difficulty in finding inexpensive bed sheets); whatever time savings could be gained from cutting pieces from a red bed sheet instead of painting would probably be offset by a loss in accuracy. That is, especially given the fact that I don't really know how to operate a sewing machine very well, I didn't think that I could get everything lined up as well if I were sewing letters than if I were painting them.

Again, let me know if anyone has red or white bed sheets, in case I feel crazy enough to make a LGR banner.

Go to your local fabric shop, like JoAnn's. Look for muslin. It's a thin cotton fabric, similar to an inexpensive, low thread count bed sheet. They come in colors like white or natural/ecru/oatmeal. It usually runs $2-3 a yard and is about 4 ft wide. The fabric stores also usually have coupons for a good 40-50% off an item.

For the red - felt. Look for large pieces of felt.

How to attach - fabric glue.

If you really want to get fancy, you can either add grommet holes to the top so that you can thread rope or something through it to hang it. Or, you could sew a sleeve through which you can run a rod to use for hanging. If you wanted to go this option and were really desperate, send it down to me and I can do it for you and send it back.

It's cheaper to buy half-breed muslin.
