At 5am this morning an SUV carrying 8 Yale undergrads was crushed when a generator fell off a semi following a collision involving 3 semis and the SUV on I95 in Bridgeport.

The names of the students killed have not been released. Survivors include several varsity athletes:

Nicholas Grass '05 - critical condition, still undergoing surgery (Pitcher)
Zachery Bradley '05 - under evaluation

I don't know what else to say.

"When we came off, [Bitz] said, 'Thank God you scored that goal,'" Moulson said. "He would've killed me if I didn't."

What a tragedy.

I95 between New York and New Haven is simply the worst--especially in slippery weather.  I don't miss it one bit.

somewhat good news in the midst of the tragedy, apparently the report of Grass' death was incorrect:

"An e-mail Yale College Dean Richard Brodhead sent to students at 4:20 p.m. mistakenly stated that Grass died of injuries sustained in the crash, Yale spokeswoman Helaine Klasky said."

Life's a bowl of punch.  Go ahead and spike it.

ESPN is reporting all 6 survivors were athletes. The Yale Daily News says they were coming home from a DKE event in NYC.

Their condition, according to police:

-- Eric Wenzel, a senior halfback on the football team and a lacrosse goaltender, is in critical condition. He was the lacrosse team's most valuable player.

-- Brett Smith, a freshman quarterback, has serious injuries.

-- Nicholas Grass, a sophmore right-handed pitcher, has serious injuries.

-- Cameron Fine, a freshman offensive lineman, suffered minor non-threatening injuries and was in satisfactory condition.

-- Zach Bradley, a sophomore infielder, suffered a broken left arm and a broken jaw.

-- Christopher W. Gary, 18, a freshman linebacker, suffered non-life threatening injuries.
