RPI over Miami - for 20 minutes

The RPI team stymied Miami last night for the first period.  It looked similar to the game they played against Harvard.  But they did run out of gas and the third period was a 5-0 disaster.  Final was 7-3.

The reason for this post is that Time Warner (Albany version) telecast the game.  It may be rebroadcast on Syracuse or the north country Time Warner channels.

The first period will give folks an idea what Cornell will see here on January 11.  It will likely be a tough game.  RIP isn't the RIP of the Dan Fridgen era.  They are much better than we have seen them in recent years.

RPI seems to play well against top teams this year until the other teams adjust between periods. Hopefully these games and the CC and UMass or Notre Dame games in Tampa should prepare the team for the ECAC grind.

Watch out next season. Another killer OOC schedule (two at Miami, Denver Cup with BU in the first round, UVM in Quebec City, and UNH) should help, as should a strong incoming goalie recruit.

It might also be that they don't have the depth to play a full 60 minutes with the top teams.

Whatever the reason, this sounds like the Clarkson scheduling pattern from the late 90s. Clarkson always seemed to lose to top teams out of conference, and then roar through league play after the holiday break and win the RS crown. I always felt part of their success at that time was a result of playing tough teams, usually on the road, during November and December.

Having watched the webcast of both RPI games vs. Miami and seeing RPI being outscored 9-0 in the two third periods, it is apparent that there is something wrong, but the jury is still out as to what is happening.
