Quote from: jkahn on October 08, 2026, 10:39:02 PMFlames broadcast did a nice job of highlighting Castagna pre-game and then also interviewed him coming off the ice at the end of the first.  When the broadcast was tossed back to the booth, they praised his "mature interview."

Did they add the mandatory "those Ivy league kids are smart"?

Better than making other recent newsworthy connections with Cornell.

Quote from: BearLover on October 07, 2026, 02:04:41 PMPer CHN, Cornell is the heaviest team in college hockey at an average of 198.1 lbs. They clear the second heaviest team, Princeton, by a full two pounds. Cornell is the second tallest team in the country at 6'1.6. Only MSU is taller, at 6'1.8.

Hopefully Cornell can be as fast as (or, ideally, faster than) the competition, or else we're back to the "skating pylons" insults of yesteryear.

Quote from: upprdeck on September 27, 2026, 11:12:25 AMBut I do think that its short sited to think everyone wants to always pull out a cell phone to listen to a call.  When in a car a radio works so much better, especially now that you can't really legally use the phone that well.

This is mitigated somewhat by the notion that most or all modern vehicles have Bluetooth connectivity with our smartphones.  Obviously this doesn't help people with older cars and/or dumbphones/no phones, but those folks were already being left behind by the move off of terrestrial radio.

Quote from: Trotsky on September 20, 2026, 03:28:34 PMYou also have to realize there are probably at least ten people on eLF who know more about the day to day operation of the team and the program than any current undergrad, for reasons which are well beyond any Sun reporter to control.

I agree we should be kind.  Jane was head and shoulders above any prior student reporter in my years of fandom, including a few who were highly honored.  She isn't the standard, she's a miracle we were fortunate to experience.  Her combination of precision and thoroughness in reporting facts and more importantly her utter disdain for the mawkish, tired overwrought emotional bullshit that typically infests sports reporting, is a one-off.  I have never seen it ever before -- even among the greatest sports reporters of all time.  She's simply a wonder.

Honestly I doubt that will survive in her professional career.  You cannot thrive in a commercial space without giving the boobs what they want.  There's just too many of them with too many dollars for your editor to ignore.  And I'm sure her successors at the Sun will return to that tawdriness as well, as it is always guaranteed to get applause.  It is the false hustle of journalism, and it plays, even at an institution where the inmates should know better.

From all this glazing of Jane, you'd think she's Charlotte Brontë...

Seriously, what is going on here? Jane was great, but she was a student reporter covering a hockey team. She didn't do anything groundbreaking our special. She asked good questions. She wrote solid descriptions of the games. I'm happy she now has a full-time adult job in sports journalism, but I have no idea what the crazy hype on this forum is all about. Several Sun reporters in past years were just as good. Raphy Gendler and a few others in the 2017-2020 era come to mind. (And that's just during the time I've been closely following this stuff--I'm sure there are others too.)

To be clear, Jane was very good, as have been some other Sun hockey writers in recent years. But this level of glazing is out of control.

If you disagree, and think she's the second coming of Grantland Rice, I'd love for you to post a few of her articles you think are particularly great.

I'll say one thing that I did think Jane did uniquely well, which was (probably because she's an athlete herself) try to drill down into the intricacies of hockey strategy. For example, the faceoff article about Walsh and Castagna's dominance at the dot. That type of article was actually really cool. But come on, her typical game recaps and weekly pieces were solid, but at approximately the same (quite high!) level of some past Cornell hockey writers.

ha - Jane is great. Trotsky's journalism pontificating is always weird. I assume he is a Christopher Hitchens fan. She, however, does not have a full-time journalism job - yet - FWIW. But will be writing for CHN still.

I, for one, appreciate that Jane will continue to be involved in college hockey circles.

Quote from: stereax on September 18, 2026, 07:48:05 PMArticle on the incomers.

With the loss of five cornerstone players, men's hockey took an aggressive approach to the offseason, filling in gaps in the defense, offense and goaltending.

"Five" "cornerstone" players. Clearly forgetting Cournoyer. And also exaggerating the impact of some of them.

After securing a podium spot with 47 points last season, the Red's playoff run was cut short by a narrow loss to Princeton in Lake Placid. This year, the Red is determined to reclaim its place at the top of the ECAC and beyond.

Blink blink. I mean I'd also like to forget losing to Denver but.

Following the loss of several offensive players in the previous year,

Following the loss of Nick DeSantis you mean?

Brad Gardiner elevates the Red's offensive control with his sophisticated puck-handling skills. Alongside 49 points across 133 games with the Ontario Hockey League's Barrie Colts, Gardiner brought a level of leadership and commitment as an alternate captain during his 2025-26 season. In his OHL career, he played 300 games, in which he posted 77 goals, 98 assists and 175 points, leading to the Dallas Stars selecting the forward 79th overall in the 2023 NHL Draft.

Pick a lane with games and points. Pretty sure the O doesn't play 133 games a season?

Bunch of other small things that piss me off in this article, too.

I'm getting old.

They can't all be Jane McNally.

Quote from: BearLover on September 17, 2026, 11:29:02 AMI hope this goes well. I'm skeptical, but if they advertise it enough then maybe they can get a reasonable number of freshmen interested. Has this event been promoted around campus?

We got it in a couple campus-wide emails.

So I guess the question now is: do students read their emails? Not nearly a guarantee, in my experience.

16 former members of the UMich men's team from 1984-2001 filed a lawsuit today against the university and its board for "sexualized torture" they claim they endured at the hands of older players.

Red Berenson and Mel Pearson are not named as defendants but are described in the suit as having condoned and encouraged the abuse: https://www.mlive.com/wolverines/2026/09/sexual-hazing-accusations-leveled-at-michigan-hockey-in-lawsuit.html

QuoteSexualized abuse akin to "torture" became the norm in ritualistic hazing among members of the University of Michigan's men's hockey team from 1984 to 2001, according to a new federal lawsuit filed by 16 former team members.

The allegations are graphic and shocking: Many allege they were stripped naked and forcibly had their genitals shaved. Others say during this process, the handles of razors were forcibly inserted into their anuses. Multiple people said they had pubic hair singed by a blowtorch. Others said older players tied a hockey helmet to the genitalia of younger players and filled the helmet with pucks.

"Coaching staff concealed the nature of the abuse and misled the players by chiding the few players who complained to 'be a Michigan man;' that they were not being 'good teammates;' and even penalizing players with reduced ice time," the lawsuit states.

What, no elephant walk?

A few days ago, the Sun had a nice interview with Austin Keiser.

It does - I just checked and it looks like I *could* catch a 6 am bus, make it to 175th Street by 10:30, go directly to MSG, catch the game, and then get back up the same night.

But also... that's 9+ hours in a bus on one day 😅

Hey, the option of a trip without the expense of a hotel night stay has to be a good thing, right?

Quote from: BearLover on August 17, 2026, 11:33:56 AMThese rankings are meant to predict the future by taking into account incoming/outgoing players. It's perfectly reasonable to expect a team that missed the NCAAs to be really good next season, for example. The rankings aren't ridiculous on their face.

Rather, the issue with these rankings is that I see no reason to believe "College Hockey NXT" is a reputable source. Who, or what, is College Hockey NXT? There's no name (or list of names) on their website. You'd think a site predicting commitments and team outcomes, and ranking recruiting classes, would be run by a former coach or scout or someone involved in college hockey in some way, but there's literally no indication (that I can find) that this website isn't run by a random kid. The emojis are a dead giveaway that this source is not to be taken seriously.

Sorry, I meant "College Puck NXT"

Anyone can start a twitter feed and proclaim themselves experts and put out a ranking. Bear Lover could even try it if he wants. So we agree for a change.

Just look at me - amirite??

Ha! Hey, when you started CHN, you already had a 'name' in the college hockey world and a record to speak of. You had earned respect already. As far as we know, "collegepucknxt" has none of that. Maybe someday that will be the case with them, but not today.

Quote from: Trotsky on August 15, 2026, 02:07:13 AMcollegepucknxt also has a pre-season top 15:

1. Den
2. Mich
3. NDak
4. Mich St
5. UMD
6. Qpc
7. WMU
8. BU
9. Wis
10. UMass
11. Drt
12. UConn
13. Prv
14. Minn
15. BC

Eh. This is just a list of annual contenders and Dartmouth. UConn had a similar record and finished behind us in polling. That is to say, they A. Don't know Jack B. None of this Matters.

Yeah this is basically the same list as every year just with dartmouth lmaooo

1. Denver (but it's an even year)
2. Chokers with a loaded roster
3. Team that is the only thing decent about studying in North Dakota
4. Chokers with a loaded roster, green variant
5. Actually really scary this year
6. Quinnipiac is unfortunately still good
7. WMU is still here they won two years ago
8. Obligatory Boston school stonks
9. Runners up last year
10. HEA stonks
11. Guys did you know Dartmouth is good now?!?
12. More HEA stonks
13. Even more HEA stonks
14. The Gophers are gonna be good eventually right
15. Obligatory Boston school stonks, darker red variant

The fact that we're not on here when teams like BU and BC, who missed the dance, are is really funny.

Work in silence.

We know how this works. Pre-season polls are always based on reputation, because of course there are no results yet. Some of these teams will make the tournament and some of them won't. In fairness, in a lot of years, Cornell also benefits from a reputation push, albeit not this year, but that's fine. Yes, none of this matters, but we need something to talk about in August, so here we are.

Quote from: ACM on July 20, 2026, 12:20:52 PMFrozen Apple release. Note time change

"Puck drop set for noon" so they hate me personally, okay 👍

Being facetious. Mostly.

Puck drop at 12, doors open at 11. Means I have to be in NYC by like, 9 am, and leave my stuff somewhere... so that means I have to come in on the 27th and leave the 28th... but that IS the Calgary game... so maybe try to get cheap seats for that (LMAO it's MSG let's be real here) and leave the 29th? But that's two nights in a hotel, which is a lot of money I don't exactly need to be spending, especially because hotels run $150 minimum... and then the bus TO NYC is cheap ($25) but the one back is like $65, so we're at $400 already, and then tickets, and then feeding and watering and such... gaaah.

Guh. I'll have to think about this way more in depth.

25-30 years ago, Shortline/CoachUSA used to offer an Ithaca-NYC bus that left around 4:30am and got into Port Authority sometime around 9-10am.  It was a great way to do a full day in the city without an overnight stay anywhere.  Sadly, I don't think they run this schedule anymore.
