John Spencer Is Dead / Rankings manipulation
September 16, 2022, 06:17:18 PM
It's recently come out that Columbia had been fudging certain metrics in order to game the US News & World Report college rankings. Can't say I'm surprised that an Ivy would do this... my only question is who cares? https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2022/sep/16/columbia-whistleblower-us-news-rankings-michael-thaddeus

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/04/13/nyregion/never-solved-a-college-dorm-fire-has-become-one-mans-obsession.html

TL;DR:

For decades there's been a whole lot of silence about what happened with official investigations on the tragic fire that most considered a probable arson. Police investigators had given up on pursuing the case for lack of conclusive evidence and a lack of a confession. Cornell had effectively swept it under the rug, perhaps to not draw attention to their failed fast-track PhD. program or their faults in the fire hazards of the dorm or their weak response in helping the victims and survivors. A Cornell alum (Class of 1970) living in Arizona got obsessed with the unsolved case and did some amateur investigating, eventually assembling a narrative that blames a certain member of the Res Club for criminal arson and, with plenty of conjecture, blames Cornell officials for covering up the crime. His stirring the pot is the subject of and reason for this NY Times article, which lends more credence to the allegations against the individual in question (who remained unnamed in the article because he was never deemed a suspect by police). The story is certainly a troubling sequence of events in Cornell history which has never gotten the resolution the Cornell community deserves.

Hockey / Redcast List of "Grievances" (suggestions)
February 26, 2011, 03:31:25 PM
Hi Elfers.  I proposed in another thread that we put together a concrete list of things we would like to see fixed or improved with Redcast as well as suggestions or comments as to how to achieve it.  Redcast gets talked about in plenty of game threads where people rant about it tangentially, so I think it would be productive to make it a thread of its own.  Perhaps this could lead to some dialogue with Athletics or a petition from the ELF community.

Hockey / Postgame - Cornell 2 @ RPI 1
December 04, 2009, 11:11:08 PM
RPI is an improved team from last year, no doubt.  They have lots of speedy guys and some playmakers.  Obviously, I'm happy with the win, but I'm not so impressed with the way they got it.  We have the personnel to play a more physical, puck possession-oriented style like the successful Cornell teams in the earlier part of the decade, but have a hard time making it happen against speedy teams.  19 Shots on goal against RPI?  17 Against BU?  It's not going to cut it in the long run if we can't generate more offense off the forecheck.  Any predictions for the Union game?

Hockey / Cornell 2 - 3 Quinnipiac; Final
November 21, 2009, 06:12:31 PM
As has been noted by others, tonight's match versus the Fighting Deerticks Bobcats of Quinnipiac is our second real challenge of the season (Yale being the first).  As we know, Quinnipiac has some dangerous and dynamic forwards, much like Yale.  Seniors Brandon Wong, Eric Lampe, and Mike "Goldilocks" Atkinson have been solid competition for Cornell for a few years now--we all remember what happened in '07.  Sophomore Dan Clarke looks to be their starter in net tonight, and looks very solid statistically, despite being on a 2-goalie rotation with Eric Hartzell, who minded net at Colgate last night.  Last year's series had a rare nil-nil tie in Hamden, and a 2-1 overtime win in Ithaca for the Red thanks to Evan Barlow.  Hopefully, coming off a PP goal last night, Riley Nash will spur the K-N-J line to be more productive.  I believe the Red will have to play a physical game and avoid odd-man rushes to get past Q this evening.  And I'll be damned if we have more problems with the video feed.

A pair of teams that matched up very competitively last season meet in another important conference game.

Patrick Kennedy and Sean Whitney are back in the lineup after missing the Brown game.  Roeszler and Nicholls are out.  Schafer is sticking with the 4th line that came together for the Brown game out of necessity but showed chemistry.

Hockey / Cornell 6 at Brown 0 11/14/09 Postgame
November 14, 2009, 11:00:23 PM
For a game with a 6-0 outcome, the reality is that it was much more closely contested than that score alone would indicate.  Ben Scrivens had several great saves during the 2nd period, which if he had not made, the game could have had a different outcome.  The fact that Scrivens was sharp tonight is welcome news--we all know how important goaltending will be for having postseason success this year, and Scrivens had looked rather pedestrian during his first few outings.  On a negative note, our powerplay is wasting time sending non-deceptive, non-strategic passes around the perimeter, instead of creating scoring chances, reminiscent of 08-09.

Hockey / Cornell 3 - 2 Niagara; Final/OT
October 30, 2009, 06:09:29 PM
Cornell's regular season opener against CHA foe Niagara should provide a good measure of where our team stands at this point, as the perennially respectable Purple Eagles already have 4 games under their belts, all against quality opponents.

It will be interesting to see how the veteran firepower is spread throughout the lines tonight, and also who gets the start in goal (I'm expecting Scrivens will, does anyone have this info yet?).

The Ithaca Journal has a live blog going for the game.

Cornell 14 - 7 Brown, midway through the 3rd quarter.

The defense is having a terrific day this far, accounting for both of Cornell's scores.  The IBN video broadcast is horrific, however.  Almost every big play has happened outside of the camera frame.  Where did they find such lousy cameramen?

Hey guys,

I'm in the process of putting a sign or two together for the game, but I don't have any very funny or insulting ideas in mind.  I want to hear some suggestions out there.
