Hockey / ESPN & HULU & mystery
January 17, 2026, 12:35:20 PM
I have the Disney Bundle and a Google Chrome device hooked up to my television. But when I start the ESPN app, select last night's  Cornell/Princeton game, and try to start it, I just run into corporate blather. Instead of the game starting, the screen shows a QR code and a 6-character PIN. The instructions only say: (1) go to https://espn.com/stream and enter the PIN. and (2) Follow the steps and allow your TV to refresh.

So, on my computer I go to https://espn.com/stream and enter the PIN. It then shows a screen of icons, and I choose HULU. I then see a screen saying "Ready, Set, Stream" with an area, "Link to your provider." So, I choose HULU again, and come to an instruction page with this entry for HULU:
Hulu + Live TV

Steps to Activate:

Sign in to your ESPN app or via ESPN.com using your My Disney credentials.
That's it!  Your ESPN Unlimited entitlement is included with your Hulu + Live TV subscription.
But there's no place for My Disney credentials.

And exactly how does a TV "refresh"? I tried shutting it off and restarting it, but that didn't work.

I can't believe I'm the only one having such problems.

(Oh, BTW, on a different TV I can watch the game without issue.)

This is for purely academic purposes, as I don't want to awaken the woofing gods.

The NC$$ schedule for Memorial Day Weekend at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, MA has:
  • Friday, May 23: Division I Women's Semifinals (2 games)
  • Saturday, May 24: Division I Men's Semifinals (2 games)
  • Sunday, May 25: Division I Women's National Championship, Divisions II & III Men's National Championships (3 games)
  • Monday, May 26: Division I Men's National Championship

Prices for tickets on individual days range from about $31.00 to $101.00, although some promotional discounts may be available.

Given this schedule and prices, what strategies do you recommend for buying tickets? (E.g., Wait until semifinalists are determined? Buy now before scalpers get them? Purchase through the school of your choice when they become available? Etc.)

Other Sports / Is Cornell v Dartmouth a trap?
April 22, 2025, 07:17:38 PM
This could be a classic trap game. Dartmouth has won some respect this year and has nothing to lose next weekend except their pride. Meanwhile, Cornell might be lulled into a false sense of security by Dartmouth's history & record. Cornell also might be looking ahead to the ILT & Memorial Day.

Now that it's been settled, and Cornell will host the Ivy League Men's Lacrosse Tournament, what do you want or suggest to make the tournament better?

To start the ball rolling, here's a suggestion. Cornell has historically made the justifiable claim that its engineering school is the best in the Ivy League. Cornell can demonstrate this by making this year's tournament broadcasts better than all other lacrosse broadcasts.

It can start by starting the broadcast on time. Then take a page from Harvard and use camera drones. A recent Inside Lacrosse podcast compared the quality of cameras colleges use to broadcast lacrosse games with the more expensive ones used by larger, commercial organizations like ESPN. Cornell could invest in higher-quality equipment (cameras and drones), which can also be used for teaching and research in multiple contexts. Cornell may even already have the equipment and just needs to use it.

Hockey / SPAM
July 04, 2024, 10:59:50 PM
Is there any way to block the spam we've been getting lately? It seems to be posting as if the spammer were a regular member of the forum. I suppose the powers that be (Greg?) have already deleted the spammer's account, but the repeated spams suggest the asshole is just creating another one.

What about blocking the spammer's IP address or even the spammer's domain?

Do any of you have other suggestions?

Hockey / Power Play
May 05, 2024, 09:35:29 PM
There's been lots of complaining about our power play in recent years. I suggest Schafer have the team study this power play goal:

And then practice it all summer long (captains' practices, of course).

Hockey / Cornell v Yale, 11/3/23
October 31, 2023, 04:06:56 PM
I'm planning to attend the game at Yale and have some questions:
[list=1]
  • Where are the best seats for visitors?
  • The Yale website offers parking, apparently for an extra fee. Is this really necessary, or is free parking readily available nearby?
  • Is there anythng else one should know about attending the game at Yale?

Hockey / Electronic Schedule
October 17, 2023, 11:28:14 PM
I looked at the "official" team schedule, but nowhere could I find a link to an electronic version (i.e., one that can be imported to something like Google Calendar).

Does anyone know if & where there is one?

BTW, the "Schedule" link to db.elynah.com under "Slack" is not working.

Hockey / Mass Media's take on Cornell Hockey
September 18, 2023, 10:45:11 AM
From the latest U.S. News & World Report college rankings:

#12 (tied with Columbia & Chicago) Cornell:

Quote from: https://www.usnews.com/best-colleges/cornell-university-2711The Cornell Big Red are well known for their successful men's lacrosse and men's wrestling teams; the school also has a strong ice hockey program.

Hummm ...

Alright. The thread is started.

Ryan Lambert wrote an interesting article on CHN about how he ranked goalies competing for the Richter Award. From a Cornell perspective, I think the bottom line is it wouldn't matter if Ken Dryden himself were playing goal for us, as long as Schafer successfully coaches teams that shut down the opponents' offenses, no Cornell goalie can possibly win the Richter Cup.

Here's the relevant quote: "Galajda [who had the highest 5v5 save %age in the country], however, also faced just 22.6 shots per 60 minutes, compared to 28.4 for Knight and 30.7 for Wall, behind a better team and in a weaker conference, all of which matter."

Hockey / Cornell @ Quinnipiac 1/31/2020
January 30, 2020, 04:21:14 PM
Since Princeton is unranked (#53 in Pairwise & RPI, #50 in Krach), but Q is #18 (#19 Pairwise & RPI, #27 Krach), this game deserves its own topic.

So I'll continue something I started over on the Princeton game topic. I bought a ticket for tomorrow's game, but it is SRO. In fact, there were only 32 tickets left when I bought it. So it looks as if the game is sold out, even if the arena won't necessarily be 100% full.

Hopefully, Cornell fans will nonetheless outnumber Q's.

Go Red!

Hockey / Perfection Returns to Lynah
January 25, 2020, 10:52:47 AM
Tonight Cornell will honor the 1969-70 Cornell men's hockey team, the only team in modern NCAA D-I history to go undefeated for an entire season. The 50th-anniversary celebration will be combined with the current team's game with Harvard. Not necessarily by plan, this is especially fitting since the 2019-20 Big Red men's hockey team currently has the highest winning percentage (86.1%) of any Cornell team since 1970.

Nonetheless, I am disappointed in this year's team, particularly in relation to the 1969-70 team. Last May, Dan Lodboa, a captain on the 1969-70 team, passed away. Here's what Dan's Wikipedia entry says about him:*
Quote from: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dan_LodboaLodboa was a tri-captain of the 1969-1970 Cornell Men's Ice Hockey Team, the only team in NCAA history to complete a season with a perfect record, going 29-0. He was the first defenseman to ever become the top Cornell scorer for a season, with 61 points on 24 goals and 37 assists in 1970. Over this three-year varsity career he accounted for 134 points (52-82). He was named The Cornell Daily Sun Athlete of the Year for 1969-70. Lodboa's career highlight is scoring a natural hat trick in the third period of the championship game in 1970, winning the tournament MOP in the process. Lodboa died on May 11, 2019 at the age of 72.[1]
Dan's third goal in the championship game came at 52:17 and put Cornell up 6-3 against Clarkson. Clarkson scored another goal a bit over a minute later. Lodboa not only scored the winning goal, but it's not much of a stretch to say his hat trick, and his overall play, won the game for Cornell. Without Dan, Cornell may not have won the national championship that year, and we would not be commemorating and celebrating tonight.

When Dan Lodboa passed away last year, I hoped the men's hockey team would honor him this season. I envisioned them bringing his family in for an evening honoring him, wearing black armbands all season, and possibly retiring his number. Ben Tupker currently wears it (#14), and since he's a freshman he could have easily been assigned a different number. (Imagine the drama if Tupker were to switch jerseys tonight, and everyone watched as #14 is raised alongside Dryden's and Nieuwendyk's.) Especially with tonight's festivities, this would give testimony to the continuity of the tradition that's Cornell hockey. Wearing the armbands, in particular I think, would have been poignant motivation for this year's team. But instead, AFAIK, nothing has been done to honor this true Cornell hero.

I deliberately held off posting this because I did not want to look past the Dartmouth game. But now I hope the team can at least dedicate their performance tonight to honoring Dan Lodboa and that his heroics won't go unnoticed this evening.

*Along with Peter Shier, who will be there tonight, Lodboa was one of only four defensemen in the team's history to lead it in scoring. His 61 points is still the highest of the four.

John Spencer Is Dead / Elynah Humor
January 09, 2020, 05:35:53 PM
Over on the hockey forum, there have been some real knee-slappers lately. It made me think, is there a "Best of Elynah" thread somewhere? Perhaps a topic on TBRW.

There should be!

Hockey / Fortress Invitational
December 09, 2019, 02:56:11 AM
Not too early to start thinking about this.

One point of concern is that our game against tOSU on 1/3/20 will be our first after a 27-day lay-off. Meanwhile, tOSU plays Colgate on 12/27 & 28, Providence plays LSSU and Union on those dates, and Army plays Robert Morris on 12/14 & 15 and New Hampshire on 12/29.

Let's hope the lay-off  Keeps us fresh, and intense practices help us fix some things like the PP. Let's hope rust is not an issue.

Hockey / Please take down that f@*#in COR 0 - PRV 4 tweet
November 15, 2019, 09:51:20 PM
It's bad enough that every year the we don't win the NC we have to spend the whole summer looking at the losing score from our last game of the season.

But now we're in the front end of what could be a really special season. So why do we have to keep on looking at the fuckin score from that awful Providence game? I know we were incredibly beat up and showed great courage, but isn't it time that we move on now?

Tell me how to do it, and I will.

This article in yesterday's Wapo claims that in 1966 over half of all Penn applicants were accepted (with an even larger percentage of transfer applicants), and even as recently as 1980 it was over 40%.

IIRC, Cornell's acceptance rate in the 1960s, when yours truly attended, was much lower, and for specific colleges (notably A&S and Engineering), lower still.

Maybe the above-cited article is confusing Penn as a whole with the Wharton School. Again, in the 1960's undergraduate business programs were generally viewed with disdain, and IIRC, Penn was the only Ivy with one.

Do you know more about either subject: Ivy admission standards over time or how undergraduate business programs gained legitimacy at elite institutions?

I've been looking for the source of this quote. This course description in Cornell's History Department attributes it to Frederick Rudolf. In fact, the course title is "The First American University."

But I searched Rudolf's opus, American College and University: A History, not only for the phrase, but also for just "first," and came up with nothing.Rudolph is very complementary to Cornell and credits it with pioneering things like coeducation and dormitories. But I could not find the specific phrase. Perhaps he used it elswhere.

Do any of you know the exact source?

John Spencer Is Dead / Cloudflare?
May 06, 2019, 11:02:30 AM
On one of my computers I've been getting an error accessing elf.elynah and some other web sites. The message reads:
QuoteError 1016 ...

What happened?
You've requested a page on a website (elf.elynah.com) that is on the Cloudflare network. Cloudflare is currently unable to resolve your requested domain (elf.elynah.com).

I switched to a different computer and had no problem accessing this site. But because the explanation for the error indicates it may be temporary, I can't be sure if it's the computer or the timing of the attempted access.

FWIW, Cloudflare is a web security/efficiency service that substitutes its own servers' IP addresses for the IP address of the genuine, final destination of the actual web site. The Cloudflare servers perform security checks before forwarding requests to the actual IP address; they also cache pages from destination web sites, thereby supposedly speeding up page rendering (esp. if the original web server is on a slower system and/or would have to construct page elements on the fly).

So please help me figure this out by answering my question. My question is: does elynah.com use Cloudflare?
