Because numbers talk and clownlover shouldn't.

Clownlover has been all over the place; beside himself that the team is blowing their opportunity in what he declared to be a year where we're supposed to legitimately contend for the national title.

Let's get a little perspective here and look at what we did last year. Did we make a deep run?   Yes.   But arguably we overachieved last year after going on a quite unlikely tear.

11 games in we were 6W-3L-1T-1OTL.

In 2023-2024, The day after our 11th game, our pwr rank was 25th with 40 comparison wins and an rpi of .5239

Including all playoff games, we improbably went 16W-3L-5T the rest of the way.

Now let's compare to this season.

After our 11th game on 12/7, out record stood at
4W-3L-3T-1OTW.

In 2024-2025 The day after our 11th game, our pwr rank was 25th with 39 comparison wins and an rpi of .5231

I don't know what happened last year to get the team on track after the holiday break, but something tells me it was part coaching and quite a bit of run good to over achieve.  Basing expectations for this year on where we finished last year and not looking at how we got there is  a mistake.   So far, this year's team and last year's team are effectively the same.

Hockey / Uh oh, our goalie's one of "them"
October 27, 2022, 12:06:59 AM
https://cornellsun.com/2022/10/25/ian-shane-struggled-to-adjust-to-college-hockey-practicing-mindfulness-helped-him-excel/

Headline; "Ian Shane Struggled to Adjust to College Hockey. Practicing Mindfulness Helped Him Excel."

Also, seems like Shane's a bit of an eccentric (or our intrepid author doesn't know the proper equipment name).

"Big moments don't rattle Shane. After making 33 saves on 34 shots against the nation's top team, Shane emerged from the locker room, removed his top hat and said that watching Quinnipiac put up nine goals against Princeton earlier that week didn't concern him and just made him think they hadn't faced Cornell."

Hockey / @cornellmhockey version of where's waldo?
October 16, 2022, 09:07:18 PM
Ugh. Why's the @cornellmhockey Instagram page playing where's waldo instead of creating good PR?

FFS I had to Google the uniform numbers to be sure I knew who they were.  Too much to tag their inste's or.outnin last names?

Sigh. I miss the days of competence....

Hockey / 3x3 OT proven silly
April 30, 2022, 05:39:52 PM
Quote from: martyAHCA.

There was lots of debate on this board about 3x3 OT and how little OT wins were valued. The article Marty found has has some actual quantitative analysis and is the  best argument I've seen for playing traditional overtime and not this silly stuff.

TLDR: ot wins and losses are irrelevant with current rules and might as well have just been ties.

Here's the portion about overtime:

QuoteOvertime a discussion point
Coaches also discussed the current overtime procedure, which began two seasons ago.

During the regular season, if a game is tied after regulation, it goes straight into a five-minute, three-on-three overtime.

If someone scores in the three-on-three, the game goes down as a win or a loss on their record, but instead of a full value win, it's counted as 55 percent for the winning team and 45 percent for the losing team in the Pairwise Rankings formula. Therefore, it's valued far closer to a tie than a win.

There were 129 college hockey games decided in overtime prior to the NCAA tournament selection show this season. Using CHN's Pairwise Customizer tool , the Herald changed all 129 overtime results to ties to see how much things would have changed if overtime wasn't a thing.

The answer: Almost nothing.

If there was no such thing as overtime, and every game that was tied after 60 minutes went into the books that way, the exact same 16 teams would have been in the NCAA tournament.

The No. 1 seeds would have been the exact same four teams. The No. 2 seeds would have been the exact same four teams. The No. 3 seeds would have been the exact same four teams. The No. 4 seeds would have been the exact same four teams.

There would have been just two differences. Western Michigan and Denver would have flip-flopped spots at No. 3 and 4 overall, while St. Cloud State and Notre Dame would have flipped at Nos. 9 and 10. The committee ended up flipping the Huskies and Irish, anyway, to avoid a UND-St. Cloud State first-round matchup.

When this overtime format was instituted, coaches were concerned that overtime wins and losses would play an outsized role, but clearly, they're having very little impact on the
Pairwise Rankings and who goes to the NCAA tournament

Hockey / coaches coming from the pros. is it a trend?
November 08, 2020, 03:31:19 PM
While catching up on some old articles, I noticed that both Vermont and Dartmouth have hired new coaches who come directly/recently from behind an NHL bench.

my first thought is it's good for the game. but I'm wondering what the brain trust here thinks the impact might be, especially if the trend continues.

thoughts?

I'm surprised nobody has posted here on ELF with a link to what has been a rapidly unfolding saga. Cliffs:

UND has a freshman player who was drafted by Arizona earlier this year but due to additional media scrutiny over the last few weeks had his draft rights renounced by Arizona a few days ago and then UND kicked him off the team yesterday.

Based on public records, this kid bullied and abused a developmentally challenged, black, classmate from second grade up through the time they were 14 that culminated in a criminal conviction. The kid "admitted in juvenile court to tricking the victim into licking a push pop that had been wiped in a urinal. Accusations at the time also included repeatedly calling the victim, an African American, the N-word and "brownie.""

Unfortunately, the most detailed original reporting on this is behind a paywall at the athletic.  (And the details there are so much worse than portrayed in the other articles IMHO, likely because everyone else is reporting based on the athletic's reporting and tweets by the author.)

Original article at the athletic - In case someone has access to that article)

Here is the most detailed account of what happened re the actual bullying and subsequent events that I can find and also not subject to a paywall. You'll.need.to scroll through the stuff a out the coyotes as its a long article.

P.S.  I do seriously wonder how bad it would have been at lynah if we had played the UND game and the kid dressed (don't remember whether the und games would have been over break or not)

I've pretty much been over the loss of last season.   But this video from  Cornell Hockey showed up on my Twitter feed and made me profoundly sad again.

Really well done. (Don't know how to link to the video except as a link to where it's posted on Twitter.

Hockey / Elf on a phone
February 18, 2020, 01:28:25 PM
Not sure it belongs in this piece of the forums here, but here goes!

I mostly read the site on my phone (Android OS / chrome browser ) And have noticed there are a few foreign features that don't show up when you aren't browsing with the desktop mode enabled for that page in the browser.

I'm sure it's a lot of work to get mobile compatibility for a whole bunch of features... However if we could just get the button  for the "last" post that'd be great.   Super annoying if one wants to go to the end but there are no new items to read.
Just an itty bitty request.

(Please carry on before bearlover cites an obscure newfangled UX statistic on the subject, upprdeck drops a response without grammar edits, and osorojo bemoans the lack of grit and emotion in my post ;-) )

P. S.  When first trying to post this, I got a DB error. Thought it was due to typing in an emoji from my android keyboard, but maybe not.  Deleted the emoji and then hit post again, and it seems to have gone through now without the emoji.

Hockey / Frozen Four Tickets 2018
November 06, 2017, 11:01:16 AM
To my surprise, I just got an email from the NCAA that I can now buy Frozen Four tickets 2018.

QuoteEXCLUSIVE FROZEN FOUR PRESALE!
SECURE YOUR SEATS PRIOR TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC
OFFER ENDS: FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 24

This is labeled "priority holder tickets" on the NCAA website.   I'm not sure why I landed in the priority line since I've never bought FF Tickets before, but maybe it extends to anyone on the email list.  I can get in there with the link in the email, but when trying to go from the NCAA website it says it is a restricted offer. (Imagine that the NCAA has it working correctly...)

Thought I'd let others now - check your email box in case you are interested.
