Hockey / Ride to MSG
November 13, 2015, 10:43:06 AM
Hi all,

I'm looking for a ride from Ithaca to MSG on 11/28, the day of the game. Gas and good company offered in exchange. Ideally, I'd like to get to the city with enough time to drop my bag off at my friend's place in Brooklyn, so, early afternoon? Please post here or PM me if you're able to help out. No return ride needed.

Thanks!

Other Sports / Mark Wells's 1980 Gold Medal
September 20, 2010, 10:12:36 PM
...is  being offered for sale by a memorabilia company. Wells sold it after falling on hard times that coincided with a spinal cord disease that has left him bedridden: http://www.bostonherald.com/track/inside_track/view/20100920hockey_players_gold_mettle_going_on_the_block/srvc=home&position=6. Effing tragic.

I think we should mobilize and come up with like $175,000-200,000, buy the medal, loan it to Wells for the rest of his life, and then I get to keep the medal because I came up with this brilliant idea. I mean, sure, it's not CORNELL-related, but please don't lie to me and say you wouldn't totally geek out over a Miracle On Ice-related gold medal ("-related" added to indicate that I know the gold medal game involved defeating the Fin(n?)s, not the USSR).

Of course, if we do have a wonderful, generous, charming, and handsome major donor come forward, I guess one could make the argument that said major donor should get to maintain ownership of the medal. In that case, I propose that supporting donors are allowed to come touch and pet the medal whenever they want, and even wear it and stare proudly in the mirror while the national anthem plays.

I mean, jeez, just the fact that I came out of the woodwork to post this should count for something! Let's make it rain!!!!!

Other Sports / Sean Avery, Vogue Intern. Discuss.
June 24, 2008, 10:26:02 AM
The story has been out for a while, it's the offseason, and honestly, what else are you people gonna do besides discuss a hot-headed Ranger's stint as an intern in Anna Wintour's empire? Work? Really.

John Spencer Is Dead / NYC Tech Nerd(s) Needed
August 01, 2006, 12:42:26 PM
Hi everyone. My boyfriend's company, a small web development firm, is looking for one or two developers to start immediately. The boyfriend asked if I knew anyone qualified, and I don't, really. But I *do* know that there are a lot of smarty-pants technical types who frequent eLynah. I've reposted the job description below. It's a legit company that takes on really interesting projects for interesting clients and seems to have a good culture (hey, the boyfriend likes it...).

I hope no one minds me posting this here -- I parked it in JSID so as not to ruffle any feathers -- but I want to help out my boyfriend as well as my fellow eLynah folks.

If this ad piques your interest, send me a private message and we can talk about it more. I can't promise I will vouch for you if I don't know you personally, but I will forward along everyone who would like to be forwarded along.

Thanks!

We are looking to hire 1-2 web developers as soon as possible for work on projects this fall.  The developer(s) would work directly for me, full time, and need to be located somewhere in/around NYC.  There will be a combination of work from home days, work from client site days, meetings with me around the city, possible travel to Boston (infrequent), etc.  We're more interested in finding  someone who is smart and can manage themselves and do good work than we are in someone with a fancy resume printed on fancy paper.  In fact, I'm not going to read anyone's resume.  I can't stand resumes. I want to find someone I can meet, talk to for 30 minutes, trust to get things done, and then get those things done.

We're pretty flexible with experience level.  The position is really for a mid-level (3-5 years out of school) developer, but we'd be comfortable hiring someone right out of college as long as they had that weird attitude of thinking they can do anything and everything in half the time anyone else can.

Technology-wise, the minimum requirement is "you need to have built a database-backed web application that someone besides you actually
uses." Ideally, they should have familiarity with Ruby on Rails (and understand unit testing and the MVC pattern), mySQL (basic queries, understanding of indexing/optimization, and search), HTML (produce clean markup and understand markup produced by our design team) and CSS (understand the basics of how stylesheets work and how css selectors relate to HTML markup).  What we expect is someone who is interested in learning about the technology we're using and who will commit the time necessary towards becoming an expert in that technology.  The applications they build will be well promoted and used by thousands of people right away once they launch.

Yep, this sounds just about like a couple colleagues of mine:

An interesting read that contains no earth shattering revelations for anyone who's worked in finance and/or hung out with guys who play hockey. The (possible) Cornell tie-in comes in the bottom two paragraphs of the second page. Enjoy.

Hockey / What I like about being a Big Red fan
September 28, 2005, 10:55:30 AM
The line/mob/stampede has created a lot of negative energy. We've certainly built on that on the forum. I've built on that in the forum. A lot of people have. Let's try and get beyond it.

Maybe we should spend some time remembering the good stuff about Cornell hockey. What we love about it, why we cheer, etc.

Earlier this year I went to a baseball game with a friend of mine who used to play for the Big Red. We were sitting next to two fans who were classic hecklers: witty, loud, unrelenting, totally obnoxious and having a great time. My friend leaned over to me and said, "Can you believe these guys? They're awesome."

I replied, "Yeah. Now imagine you've got those guys sitting on your right and above and below you as well. Imagine they keep it up for the whole game. That's what it's like to sit in Section B."

It was so cool to be able to say that, and to see the look on my friend's face that showed it really meant something to him personally that people were that passionate about the sport he and his teammates worked so hard to excel at, and that it's not just a party line to keep the building filled every Friday and Saturday night during the colder Ithaca months.

So who else has a story?

Yo, fools:

I hear from a well-placed source that the terms should keep him at Cornell as long as he wants to be there...

Hockey / OT- Homecoming ride needed
September 30, 2004, 01:17:30 PM
Jerseygirl needs a ride to Ithaca from the Hoboken/NYC area on Friday, October 15th.  See, I have lots of friends who could theoretically drive me, but they do not live in the New York metro area.  The ones who do live here do not have cars.  Here's the thing: I just started (or will start) a new job tomorrow (!) and can't very well leave work early my second week in.  So, if anyone is leaving after 5:30 on that Friday and has an extra seat in their car, I would be forever grateful and happy to pay for gas and snackies.  I'm not even that concerned about the ride back, but I can help you out with that too.  I can tell stories or keep my yap shut -- whatever you want.  I won't embarrass you by waving my foam Big Red bear paw out the window as we drive up Route 17.  Please post here or private message me if you can help me out, so my little heart doesn't break for lack of a ride.  Thanks.

Hockey / Dartmouth fans-- I need your help
June 14, 2004, 02:09:22 PM
I am writing something that is partially set at Dartmouth, and I would like it to be as accurate as possible.  For example, I wouldn't want my characters to be living in off campus apartments if everyone lives in dorms/frats/whatever.
If any of the Dartmouth fans/students/alums could offer their wisdom on the subject of student life, I would be forever grateful.  You can private message me if you like so we can talk off forum/through e-mail.
Once again, I really appreciate any help anyone can give me.
Thanks!
Molly
