Hockey / Free* Cornell Hockey Stuff
December 14, 2014, 02:23:40 PM
Hi All,

My wife and I are moving apartments in a few weeks, and in the process we're getting rid of some stuff that we don't use or feel like packing and moving.  Among these things are some various CU Hockey (and other) memorabilia that folks here might want.  All of these are free* to good Cornell hockey fan homes.

Set of almost all game programs from the 2002-03 Frozen Four season
Red Hot Hockey t-shirt from the first edition in 2007, gray, XL, never worn with tags attached
A program from the same game
A program from the 2005 regional in Minneaplis
A program from the 2005 ECAC tournament in Albany
A few assorted issues of the Cornell Lunatic from the late '90s
A program from the 2007 Lacrosse Final Four

All programs are in pretty good but not perfect condition.

Additionally, I have some jerseys that I bought over the years and am considering selling to clear up space and raise some cash.  These include some Teagle-bought gameworn jerseys and a few gameworns from Cornell alumni in the pros.  Before going the eBay route, I figured I'd see if there were any interested parties here.  If you might be, please email me (I'm pretty sure my email is in my profile, if not then PM me) for more info.

Happy holidays,
Josh

*  I say "Free*" because if I can't get these things to you in person in/around NYC, I'd appreciate it if you could cover half the shipping costs to your location.

Deadspin article

Original article from Columbia Spectator

Quote"Pete Mangurian has consistently denied the diagnoses of concussions," the letter stated. "There are several players who will speak to the fact that Mangurian told them to return to practice, that they are faking their concussions, and that they are being soft if they sit out for their concussion injury."

Quote"You are terrible [expletive] people," Mangurian allegedly told his players after [the team's 42-7 loss to Albany]—the expletive had been edited out in the copy sent to Spectator by Jake Novak, 'CC 92 and editor of the blog CULions. "The world would be a better place without you."

Hockey / Alumni In The Playoffs - 2011
March 29, 2011, 03:50:20 PM
So, I found myself wondering the Abbotts' season was going in Sweden, and when I looked them up I learned that the SEL playoffs are already underway.  Do you know what this means?  (It means that this damn thing doesn't work at all!)  It means it's time to start a new edition of the Alumni In The Playoffs thread!  Since Cam and Chris were the players who brought this to mind, let's start this with them:

Sweden

After a successful first season at Lulea HF last year (during which they were second and third on the team in scoring), Cam and Chris Abbott stayed there for another season.  Lulea improved from 10th to 4th in the regular season league standings, and Chris was second on the team with 36 points in 55 games; Cam missed some time (I believe I recall hearing due to a concussion), but his 19 points in 32 games were the 4th-highest per-game scoring on the team.

In the first round of the playoffs, Lulea played sixth-seeded Djurgardens (the SEL has a playoff system in which, in the first round, higher seeds can choose which lower seeds to play, and third-seeded Skelleftea chose to play fifth-seeded Linkopings instead of Lulea), and won in a seven-game series.  Cam had one goal during a series in which he was limited to X games, while Chris had a goal and five assists.  Lulea are now paired with third-seeded Skelleftea in the semifinals, a series that's currently tied at 2-2 with game 5 currently being played in Skelleftea, game 6 to be played in Lulea on Thursday, and game 7 again in Skelleftea on Saturday if necessary.  Over the first four games (which have all gone to overtime), Chris has two assists and Cam has a goal and an assist.  Chris's 8 points so far in the playoffs lead the team and tie him for third among all players.

Switzerland

Mike Knoepfli played his third season with Fribourg-Gotteron of the Swiss National League A, where his teammates included Mark Mowers (UNH).  Knoepfli had 20 points in 49 regular season games, good for 8th on the team, and Fribourg-Gotteron finished 8th in the regular season, the last team to qualify for the playoffs.  The team was swept in the first round by regular season league champions HC Davos, staying competitive in the first two games before being blown out in the last two.  Knoepfli had no points in the playoffs.

Charlie Cook was something of a wanderer this season, starting the season with MoDo of the SEL before moving to Switzerland, making a short stop at Davos before eventually settling with the Langnau Tigers, which is also where Mike Iggulden spent the 2010-11 season.  Cook had one goal in seven games with Langnau, but had a plus/minus (-11) that seems like it must be a misprint because it's so low.  Iggulden was a standout in his first year in Switzerland, leading Langnau with 40 points in the 50-game regular season.  The team finished sixth in the regular season but, like Fribourg-Gotteron, were swept in the first round of the playoffs, falling to SC Bern in 4 games.  (Cue JTW singing and waving his SCB scarf.)  Cook played in just one of the four games and had no points; Iggulden played in all four and had two assists.

Speaking of Bern, Justin Krueger played for them in 2010-11, scoring a goal and 10 assists in 50 games.  After beating Langnau in the first round of the playoffs, Bern, the defending champions, drew the Kloten Flyers in the semifinals.  Bern fell behind 3-0 in the series but have since come back to tie the series at 3; game 7 is being played now and Bern trail 1-0 in the third period.  Krueger has 2 assists in the 10 playoff games Bern has played so far.

I believe that's it for Europe; the one other Cornellian who played across the pond last year was David LeNeveu, but he's now back in North America.  The CHL playoffs have also started already, and those involve at least David McKee and Joe Scali; I'll look into those later on.

Hockey / Alumni in the Playoffs - 2010
April 14, 2010, 03:41:44 PM
NHL

Douglas Murray and the top-seeded San Jose Sharks play the Colorado Avalanche in the first round of the Western Conference playoffs starting tonight.  The first five games of this series are scheduled to be televised on Vs., though the times aren't ideal for Eastern Time Zone viewers.

Ryan O'Byrne and the Montreal Canadiens squeaked into the Eastern Conference playoffs and start their series against the Washington Capitals tomorrow.  Games 1, 2, 5 and 6 of this series are also scheduled to be televised on Vs.  O'Byrne was in the lineup for each of the Canadiens' last five regular season games, but in their final game on Saturday he was the seventh defenseman and played only 1:46, so it might be that he'll be the odd man out in the postseason.

Byron Bitz's Florida Panthers missed the NHL playoffs.

AHL

Ray Sawada's Dallas Stars also missed the NHL playoffs, but he's currently listed on the roster for their AHL affiliate, the Texas Stars, who start their first-round playoff series against the Rockford IceHogs on Friday.

Jon Gleed and the Bridgeport Sound Tigers start their playoff series against the top-seeded Hershey Bears tonight.

Ryan Vesce and the Worcester Sharks finished first in the Atlantic Division of the AHL, and start their first-round playoff series against the Lowell Devils tonight.

ECHL

After short stints with the AHL's Portland Pirates and Manitoba Moose earlier this season, Mark McCutcheon rejoined Evan Barlow with the Idaho Steelheads.  The team won the Brabham Cup for the best regular-season record in the ECHL this season and earned a bye into the second round of the playoffs.  Their first series, against the Utah Grizzlies, starts on Friday.  Barlow, incidentally, was 2nd on the team and 7th in the league with 75 points this season.

Sasha Pokulok and the Bakersfield Condors won their first-round playoff series against the Victoria Salmon Kings three games to two, and will play the Stockton Thunder in the second round.  Pokulok had no points and was -4 over the five games.

CHL

Dave McKee's Allen Americans, in the team's first year of existence, finished second in the CHL's Southern Conference and earned a bye to the second round of the playoffs, where they beat the Laredo Bucks four games to three.  They're now tied 1-1 with the Odessa Jackalopes in the Southern Conference finals.  McKee, however, has been backing up Chris Whitley, and his only game action came in relief in a 5-1 loss in the fifth game of their first series, when he allowed 2 goals on 14 shots over 36:54 of ice time.

Topher Scott and the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees missed the CHL playoffs.

Europe

Mike Iggulden and Dynamo Riga upset SKA St. Petersburg in the first round of the KHL playoffs, but were eliminated by HK MVD Balashikha in the second round.  Iggulden seems to have played in most or all of Dinamo's playoff games, but was held off the scoresheet.

Charlie Cook and Rauman Lukko finished third in the regular season of the Finnish SM-liiga, but were swept by TPS Turku in their first playoff series.  Cook didn't have any points in the four games, but his whole team only scored four goals in the series.  He also had two penalties for koukkaaminen, and one for pelin viivyttäminen - kiekko katsomoon.  I have no idea what those mean, but Finnish words are funny so there they are.

Mike Knoepfli and Fribourg-Gottéron were eliminated by Genève-Servette HC in seven games in the first round of the Swiss National League playoffs.  Knoepfli had no points in the series.

David LeNeveu and Red Bull Salzburg won the championship of the Erste Bank league, the top level in Austria, for the third time in the last four years after defeating Black Wings Linz in the finals.  LeNeveu played all four of Red Bull's wins in the finals, beating Yale alum Alex Westlund (who was the league's MVP) in the process.  Red Bull also won the IIHF Continental Cup back in January.

Cam and Chris Abbott and Lulea HF missed the playoffs in the Swedish Elitserien.

I think that's everybody, but let me know if I missed anybody.

Hockey / Bob McKenzie's Parting Thoughts
March 30, 2010, 01:34:08 PM
Bob McKenzie, for those of you who aren't familiar, is a well-respected hockey commentator for TSN in Canada, and previously editor-in-chief of The Hockey News and hockey columnist for the Toronto Star.  He's also the father of soon-to-be-graduating St. Lawrence senior forward Mike McKenzie, and has, over the past four years, done some posting on USCHO about his experiences relating to NCAA and ECAC hockey.  He recently shared some parting thoughts in a post that's well worth a trip over, even for those who don't generally have the attention span to parse through all the drivel that sometimes populates the USCHO boards.  Enjoy!

Hockey / NHL Central Scouting Mid-Season Rankings
January 25, 2010, 05:45:04 PM
USCHO Article

No current Cornell players on the list (though note that Birch and D'Agostino are already drafted), but two recruits:  2011-committed RW Brian Ferlin, currently with Indiana in the USHL, comes in at #122, and 2010-committed D Mathieu Brisson, with Omaha of the USHL, is at #177.

Three Harvard players are listed, including Danny Biega at #31 (the highest ranking for an ECAC player, and the only player on the list who is already playing in the ECAC); Princeton also has three players on the list, including 2010 recruit Sean Bonar (we are all now on notice to be ready to make fun of that name), the only ECAC recruit on the goalie list (I mean, seriously, a goalie named Bonar? How great is that?).  Yale has two players on the list, including the highest-ranked forward committed to an ECAC school.  Dartmouth, Colgate and RPI each have one player on the list.

Predictably, the list is heavily weighted toward the usual suspects like Minnesota, UND, BC, BU, Michigan, etc.  However, from the "Times They Are a-Changin'" department, Notre Dame appears five times in the top 28 skaters in the ranking including Riley Sheahan, the top-ranked collegiate skater.

From today's posting titled "Cornell Has Dropped Enhanced Financial Aid For Athletes":

QuoteThe good news, however, is that Cornell does not appear to have been restricted from offering enhanced financial aid to select non-athletes. Which means there should be no reason why we can't continue to have the best marching band in the Ivy League.

You're goddamn right we do.

Other Sports / [Lax] 2009 Ivy League Awards

Rob Pannell wins Rookie of the Year.  Max Seibald is one of two unanimous First Team selections and becomes the first men's Ivy player ever selected to the First Team four times.  Pannell, John Glynn and Matt Moyer join Seibald on the First Team.  Ryan Hurley was picked for the Second Team (in my opinion a pretty clear case of award-spreading since he led the league in goals per game and was third in points per game), and Jake Myers receives Honorable Mention.

Brown G Jordan Burke wins Player of the Year, the first player ever to win it in back-to-back years.

Edit to add:  The story posted on Laxpower appears to be a reproduction of a Brown Athletics story, so for a more neutral perspective the Ivyleaguesports.com story might be preferable.

Short version for Cornell fans:  Seibald first team, Glynn second team, Hurley and Moyer honorable mention.  Princeton D Cocoziello (1st) and Brown G Burke (2nd) the only other non-HM Ivy players.

Editorial comment:  Is it possible for a guy who was honorable mention for the All-America team to be not getting enough credit?  Hurley had significantly better output than a few of those guys, most notably Hopkins A Huntley (3rd).

For those who might be curious, 15-2 Ithaca College is #8 in the DIII poll.  The Bombers beat RIT in the championship game of the Empire 8 Tournament on Sunday and earned an automatic bid to the DIII tournament.  They and 13-1/#2 Cortland (their only loss came against IC in late March) are probably the best bets for Central NY to unseat the Maryland lacrosse hegemony (in the form of 18-0/#1 Salisbury) in the tournament.  It looks like 9-2/#12 St. Lawrence might also make it into the tournament; they finished 6-0 in their conference, the Liberty League and host the 9-5 "Rensselaer Redhawks" (who?) in one semifinal, while 9-3 Clarkson plays 11-3 Union in the other.  Neat.

UNC jumps Cornell because they beat (3-4, reeling, lost their last four games) Hopkins and Cornell only beat Penn.  I have no real objection to UNC ranked above Cornell after they beat Cornell early in the season, but the way polls works never fails to confuse me.  I'm not sure how Syracuse deserves to be #1 but I suppose someone has to be.

In DIII, Ithaca College lost their first game of the season in overtime at RIT last weekend; they're now 8-1 and #6 in the DIII poll.

Edit to add:  Hopkins is 3-4 against the toughest schedule in the country (per Laxpower's SoS rankings) and their next three games are at Duke (10-1), vs. Maryland (7-2), and at Navy (8-2).  After that they've got cupcakes to finish out the season, but they've got to win one of those three games if they want to avoid what happened to Syracuse last season.

Hockey / Riley Nash signs with Edmonton
April 01, 2008, 02:37:58 PM
Article from cornellbigred.com
Preliminary word from the Oilers' website is that he'll join the Oilers' AHL affiliate in Springfield.
Riley might even get there in time to play in their game against Worcester tomorrow night.
I guess they're hoping to get him on their playoff roster if they qualify.
Looking at the AHL standings, though, that doesn't seem very likely.

For fuck's sake...  I thought we really had a shot to keep him for two or even three years.
On the one hand, I'm happy for him and I'm sure he'll succeed at the next level.
On the other hand, I'm pretty bitter about this.
Looking at it realistically, though, I guess it was only a matter of time.
Sigh...  good luck, Riley.

Over in the Division III poll, our neighbors to the South are once again off to a strong start to their season.  IC is #4 in the polls (and #1 in Laxpower's computer rankings, though computer rankings don't mean much this early in the season) with a 5-0 record.

Quote[A]verag[ed] 22.5 points, 7.0 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.0 steals. The sophomore shot 65 percent from the floor, hit on nine-of-13 three-pointers and made all six of his free throws with just two turnovers in 72 total minutes.

Not a bad weekend.  Louis Dale was on the Honor Roll for the week as well.

I've got a bunch of programs, mainly between 2001 and 2006, that I've decided to get rid of because space is tight, but it seems a shame to just toss them if there might be someone who holds on to this kind of thing and might want them.  I won't list them all here but please PM me if you're interested.

I'm also looking for a copy of the 2003 Frozen Four program (somehow the only one from that season that I'm missing), so if anyone has a spare I'd be interested in that.

Edit to add:  I don't want money from these (other than enough to cover any shipping charges that might be incurred), I'm willing to give them away to another Cornell fan who'd give them a good home.
