I missed it but Sullivan Mack is back in the AHL with Hartford to finish out their season.  In three games since his recall he's scoreless.

O'Leary recorded his third three point game of the season on Friday but Andreev earned second star of the game with two assists (he has five in two games) in Maine's win.

Shucks.  That was a disappointing finish to a very fun season.  I would so much rather endure the agony of a close NCAA game that is a toss up than to lose a lopsided game like that.  I waited a full calendar year to hopefully get back the feeling I had during that magical run from last spring.  I can't say that I truly expected to feel like that this spring after the way they sputtered down the stretch but I was hoping for a competitive game and maybe a first round surprise.

In the end this young team just proved to not be tough enough to play against.  It was a second half of the season issue and not just evident in the Denver game.  I'm hopeful that the forward group of Hiscock, Long, Pirtle, Murray and Arsenault can figure out how to grind down the other team along the likes of a Jeff Malott.  I'm not necessarily expecting that to be how it plays out with some of their skill sets and Casey's coaching style vs Schafer's but it's a way to potentially create more offensive opportunities that start in the opponent's zone beyond winning a faceoff.

It will take time for the yearning for them to play a heavier game to leave my body after thirty years of that style.  I worry though that trying to play the same type of game as the usual Frozen Four teams is asking too much of our talent pool.  I'm willing to wait and see if they can make it happen though.  They certainly have a ton of balance from this year's freshman group.  I'm excited to see how the newcomers will fit in.  It's going to be interesting to see how Casey's role players differ from the ones Schafer used to target.

That's one pretty successful transition year in the books.  Can't wait to add to it.

Grrr.  This has turned into a very pedestrian finish to the season.  I'm certainly very happy that the body of work was enough to secure an NCAA at large berth.  I'm not as happy to be heading there off of a semifinal loss.

The games against Princeton this season have all been very similar.  Princeton also held Cornell to two goals in each game.  This game was a bit maddening.  Cornell spent stretches of the game being non-existent.  The first fifteen minutes of period two were all Princeton.  That is usually when Cornell plays their best.

So many early chances to get some breathing room.  Two open nets and a breakaway with nothing to show for it.

The second and third Princeton goals were missed assignments.  I get having one defender going for the puck and not the man but you can't have two guys do it.  Can't believe that guy snuck out of that group with the puck.  It was quite a finish.  I'm disappointed that nobody picked up the guy on the back door on the go ahead goal.  He was there long enough to be noticeable.

There were very few shots off the pass.  Gathering the puck to take a shot allowed Princeton to get in position for the block.  Not sure why that aspect of the offense comes and goes as much as it does?

I understand that there is a difference when you are playing to extend your season vs knowing you have an NCAA spot locked up.  Not bringing home a third ECAC Championship means there is less to hang your hat on if things don't go well next weekend.  Hopefully there's another level these guys can get to.

QuoteOne thing I saw a couple of times too many was drop passes after crossing into their zone.  Both times it went the other way.  That's never the play.
You're obviously exaggerating so don't take my response to be taking you literally, but it is very often the play but it requires a lot more awareness of where everyone is to deploy. If the trailer isn't right there, you're just leaving the puck for whoever and that is the same kind of assumption of the best case scenario that I see when our team tries to clear by rifling the puck behind the net and up the boards. Quick decision-making is key to being effective but I think we have some go-to moves that are much higher risk than they need to be. Like you, I prefer when we bang it off the glass to clear.

I generally have a distaste for going backwards with the puck unless you are going for a change or you have established possession in the zone.  Especially at this level I think the success rate is not good enough.  Our guys except maybe Castagna don't cross the opponents blue line with enough speed to back guys in and create the space necessary to make a drop pass effectively.  There were two times in yesterday's game.  DiGiulian dropped it right after he entered the zone and it went the other way and I can't remember if it was Ryan or Major who did it also and instead of a zone possession it became a turnover.  The play is to get deeper into the zone.  A play like that against a good team can be costly.

HO-LY.  That game was so much more Friday and much less Saturday than I was hoping for.  Most of the game was played in front of me and since Cornell only shoots that way once it made for a pretty uncomfortable watch.

I thought Cornell did a much better job using the glass to clear pucks early on instead of looking for a high forward to tip the puck clear or worse, trying to pass through the middle.  They lost a lot of positional battles in front of the net though.  On both Harvard goals against Cornell had the numbers but the defenders weren't able to check the sticks.  Gosh that St Louis kid is stealthy.

I was really glad that they didn't let allowing the first goal fester.  I wanted nothing to do with playing from behind.

One thing I saw a couple of times too many was drop passes after crossing into their zone.  Both times it went the other way.  That's never the play.

The final twelve minutes of the second was when Cornell finally turned the tables.  I thought a power play goal there at the end would be game over.  They didn't score and as a result they spent the entire third period facing wave after wave.

As for the two goals scored during that stretch first I bring you my new segment...

I really enjoy how they are able to deploy that kid.  He's up ahead of the play on breakouts.  He's down below the dots on the power play.  He has a lot of forward tendencies in many situations.  He hasn't been immune to the freshman valleys but he has the potential to be a true difference maker as he continues to mature.  I thought it was too bad that they couldn't credit him with the Walsh goal because he basically shot that puck to ricochet it in off of Walsh.  It had so much velocity that Walsh couldn't react to it if he wanted to actively try to tip it in.  Beautiful set up.  Back to my regular post...

That was a huge hit by Ryan that led to the Fisher goal.  Compared to our big guys he looks on the smaller side but he's had a couple of bone crunchers lately.  Nice job coming off the wall and finding the open man.

Fisher has really started to settle in. He has those moments that make you scratch your head but now that we are seeing the offensive side of his game he's showing he can be a well rounded player.  Combine that with the solid play of Ashton and it was a major win for Cornell in grabbing those guys from the transfer portal.

That Cournoyer save on the breakaway was so huge.  He was terrific down the stretch.  Very calm and poised.

I'm glad Harvard pulled the goalie because there was no way Cornell was getting any breathing room otherwise.  There have been a couple of extra exciting empty netters this year with the Castagna beating everyone down the ice earlier this season and now the goal post with bodies diving for the loose puck.  I'm hoping this Castagna empty netter to cap the home portion of the season isn't his final Lynah goal but I guess that's for another post.

That celebration was what we have waited all year for.  I was a bit worried because Pirtle leapt onto an unsuspecting Cournoyer and he rammed his back into the crossbar.  He reached back it looked like in pain so hopefully it's nothing.  He seemed ok as he brought up the rear during the victory lap.

This was the kind of weekend we've been asking for (not the playing a third game part).  Full barn.  Students and pep band participation.  Would have been interesting to compare it to if Colgate had been the opponent.  Felt like everyone behaved themselves too.

My last gripe is that the game ends and it's exciting and we're all relieved and then they decide to pipe in the loud radio music.  The band had done such a nice job all weekend beating it back.  That IS NOT the time for it.  Let the moment breath.  It's not like they had a song that they rallied around (Gloria anyone?).  The place was rocking.  That was the only soundtrack you needed there.  Thankfully the crowd was able to drown it out eventually but there's no need to take away from that moment with Jock Jams.

I'm pretty sure I've attended my last game of the year.  Hope that you folks traveling next week have a great time.  Let's three-peat!

Not very lovey at all

Not sure how that didn't get looked at.

Tried to post this between the first and second, but...

Pretty sure they didn't have it looked at because all they could review for is a major penalty, and it probably wasn't up to that level. And/or they had no video of it.
Yeah, it looked bad, but I think it would've been a two minute minor for roughing at most, and you can't call that on a review.

If they reviewed it they would have seen the Stanley dive as well.  I guess if either ref saw it they considered it a wash

I don't want to nitpick a win because they were the better team in every facet.  One thing that I think they need to get into their game as the opponents get better is they need to get back to playing below the other team's goal line.

There were multiple examples last night but one in particular stuck with me.  In the second Hiscock was ahead of the defender and first one on the puck.  No teammates had even gained the zone when he arrived on the puck so I thought he would pin it and wait for help.  Instead without even stopping he backhands it out to the slot and nobody is home.  I think that especially one of our biggest players should be using that advantage to maintain possession.

What a difference it made playing with the lead.

Smart play by DeSantis to put the puck to the net despite the bad angle.  That goalie hadn't played a puck clean all weekend.  Still not sure how it snuck in.

The first Kraft goal was the second scoring play of the night that resulted from a dump in.  That was not part of the game plan Friday night.  Glad to see the adjustment.

I was so intent on watching Walsh coming in one on one that I didn't see Kraft streaking to the net.  That's the pass play people have been calling for when I have been happy to see the guy shoot.  What a terrific finish by Kraft!

I think that I counted ten straight face off wins on the penalty kill.  It was a clinic tonight.

Really nice rebound after letting one slip away Friday.  Once they figured out how to get out of their own zone after being hemmed in early they took the game to them.  They were hitting guys right off the opening face off.  Shots were getting through and they were winning races and battles that they lost in Game 1.  Parker Murray looked good at both ends of the ice.  The crowd and band were strong again.  Another one just like it later today please.
