Thanks for that. Always nice to be remembered. Coming down this weekend to see the boys beat Harvard and celebrate the '67 class. Should be a great weekend.

Hi All
Pete Shier '78 here. Thanks for all the nice words about my son Kevin and the story of the unfortunate truck accident we came upon on I-90. There were many people involved in helping out along with us but Kevin seems to have generated a lot of press and recognition, I suspect primarily because of his age (20) and the recruiting trip/hockey player/truck blowing up 15 secs after the soldier was pulled from it story line.

He showed remarkable bravery and also has been very humble in the interviews he's done here in Canada and in the US. His concern has been more about the soldier and his well being than anything else to be honest. The US Military has also called and is considering him for a Conspicuous Service Medal and the Buffalo Sabres might want to do a presentation of some kind when the solider has recovered sufficiently so it's all a bit heady for him given his low key nature.

And yes, unfortuntely he won't be donning the Red and White at Lynah next year but instead will head up the road to Union. Cornell was very interested in him but he just felt that a smaller school would be more to his liking. Even my reminders about '...the Hot Truck, Dunbar's and The Chapter House...' couldn't change his mind! My dilema will be who to cheer for when Union plays at Lynah next year. ;-)

Thanks again all for the nice words and thoughts about my son. Much appreciated.

Hockey / Re: Art Kaminsky Gone at 66

Did not know about this and it saddens me to hear it.
Art introduced himself to me in my Sr. year and negotiated my contract with the Minnesota North Stars after I graduated from Cornell. He gave me what he termed, the 'Cornell Discount' (i.e. free) for doing the deal which was incredible.
He was generous and helpful to someone he didn't really even know and his loyalty to Cornell was remarkable.
66 years of age is way too early. Condolences to his family.

I've got a hockey team of 15 year olds and their parents I need to feed before the game on Sat -probably 40-45 in total- there used to be a sports bar downtown (near state street diner?) that might work if it's still open ? (name?) or any other ideas? We're staying at the Ramada near triphammer mall...(Fri night is Applebee's so that won't work)
many thanks

Hockey / Re: Cornell Hockey To Hold Jersey Auction
January 02, 2009, 12:07:47 AM
We tried to organize an exhibition game but couldn't find any teams available to play us. My connections in Ithaca are limited now but if anyone out there has or knows of a good 14/15 year old team that wants a game that weekend, drop me a line! (we're a pretty successful Toronto based AA team - last year we were undefeated in regular season play, won the provincial championships and this year so far are in first place in our league.) Our boys would love to play, even if it was just a 'friendly'. And if we could convince Mike S. to 'donate' an hour of Lynah ice, so much the better!

Hi All-
Pete Shier '78 here. I'm bringing the team I coach in toronto (north york knights - 15 year olds) down to Ithaca to see the 2 Niagara games Jan 9/10th. I notice that my name & number (#5) is being honoured which I'm both humbled and excited by.
Can someone explain to me how I (or some of the other parents on my team) might go about 'buying' one of the jersey's after the game?
Many thanks and looking forward to returning to Ithaca again.

Just returned home from an unbelievable weekend in Ithaca....watched the Big Red win two important games, took my 11 year old hockey team on a tour of the dressing room, weight room and Lynah (play by play done by none other than Coach Mike who wowed the kids with his 'gotta get good grades to play here' speech!), did the campus tour, spent a bundle at the campus store and to top it off we WON the Ithaca Youth Hockey tourney against teams that were a year older than us!....pretty satisfying....(When we crossed the border back into Canada, Mr. Customs Man asked if we had anything to declare....."Just this!" cried one of the kids, holding the trophy up...!! Priceless...)

When you're right in the middle of something you sometimes don't realize how special it is. Every single one of the parents we brought down who witnessed the games were BLOWN AWAY by the spirit, the electricity, the support and the overall atmopsphere of Lynah. The fan support you guys provide is unmatched anywhere. Keep it up.....if there's a seventh man award in hockey you guys deserve it!

BTW- Our team colors are blue, black amd white. In honor of 'The Big Red', the kids voted to  change our nickname to 'The Big Blue' for the remainder of the year!!

wow, thanks for all the kind words...i'll remember to keep coming back here when i'm having an off day!
The game certainly has changed Al- much tighter checking now and when i watch the speed the guys have and the and the power they hit with I'm very glad i played a few years ago.
We didn't work as hard at conditioning ( i recall jim vaughn in the weight room, sipping on a beer watching dave ambrosia pump like his 25th bench press and ask...."hey Amby, can't you get hurt lifting all that metal?") or do it all year round like now....more at stake after college for sure ($$$)
The game is not as 'free wheeling' which might cause some to say not as exciting; i think the talent level at which they play is remarkable....i have a ton of respect for the guys playing now and it's just as exciting, just different exciting.

Looking forward to seeing Ithaca & the Big Red again and i know the parents and kids I'm bringing are really excited...not sure how we'll do in the tourney but that's only half the point in coming down....

Hockey / added noise this weekend.....
January 26, 2005, 09:15:20 PM
hi all-
i'm bringing my team of 11&12 year olds down to ithaca for a youth hockey tourney and we're attending both games this weekend.
I've been indoctronating these kids in all things Lynah. Especially the cheers.  Their fave is... "I'm blind, I'm deaf, I wanna be a ref". (they're 11;  refs are the enemy...) Don't be surprised if we get it started. Hope you'll help us out..
We're the North York Knights from Toronto. I played for CU from '75-'78 and am their coach....
Any helpful tips you want to pass along, please do....
