Quote from: TrotskyAmazing game; one for the ages.

And the final 5 minutes of the 2nd should go down in history in particular. Surviving a 5 minute major, getting a temporary reprieve on the minor, a missed penalty shot, a 5x3 SH situation?  And nothing happens to the score?  Epic, gut-wrenching roller-coaster of a window.

That 5x3 kill was awesome.  So good positionally it never felt like we were down two men.  I'm sure I'm forgetting a moment or two, but I don't remember one particularly scary scoring chance during that PK.  Kill Red Kill (which came through pretty well on the broadcast)!

Quote from: mhaTwo Newark-area Marriott properties are offering a surprisingly good $99/night deal for Thanksgiving weekend...
Of course they are, because who the hell goes to Newark over Thanksgiving weekend?  (Besides us, I mean.)

It should be noted that neither of these hotels are particularly close to the Prudential Center; they're both by the airport, as Mark says, which is a few miles from downtown Newark.  Unless you felt like taking a walk through a not-particularly-nice part of Newark/Elizabeth, you'd probably wind up taking the Newark Airport AirTrain (note that the Newark Liberty Airport Marriott is on the airport grounds, the Renaissance Newark Airport Hotel just off) to the Newark Airport New Jersey Transit station, and then switch to a NJT train going to Newark Penn Station.  Just figured I'd let you know what you'd be signing yourself up for.

Doesn't this also entail paying a premium compared with other NJT fares for a comparable distance?
Yes, in that the AirTrain fare ($5.50) is included in the one-way NJT fare ($8.25) from Newark Penn Station (or any other origin point) to Newark Airport.  (For comparison's sake, the one-way fare from Newark Penn Station to North Elizabeth, the next station past Newark Airport, is $2.75.)  I'm not sure whether you can buy the NJT Newark-Penn to Newark Airport fare unbundled with the AirTrain fare; theoretically, I suppose you could take NJT to North Elizabeth and then call a taxi, though I have no idea what the taxi situation is like in the area.

(My personal views about the fact that it's free to take the AirTrain to parking lots and rental car facilities, while it costs $5.50 to take it to the NJT transfer point, are, I suppose, a conversation for another day and another forum.)

There are so many things wrong with NJ Transit, from fare structure to capital programs to everything else, that it needs its own forum.

Quote from: billhowardBill Gates when he was younger blew off questions about his philanthropy by saying he would get to that in a much bigger way later. But the man kept his promise. Nothing wrong with working hard, making money, and then easing out early to do good works.
You can certainly argue about whether it was worth all the money it cost, but at least Gates produced something of value, and something that has helped productivity and our leisure time. The problem with Wall Street is they are not producing much of value other than tax money for NY.

I'm not trying to defend Wall St, but the whole concept of investment banking is that it puts capital in the hands of people so that they can build something and be successful.  While this obviously doesn't happen all the time, I don't think it's fair to say that an institution that provides capital for start-ups is valueless.  Most businesses can't start from nothing or from personal capital alone.  There is a place for it, if done well, no?

Quote from: dbilmesGreat quote by Scrivens in Monday's Ithaca Journal:

"I'm going to be able to call these guys up in 20 years and say 'Hey remember that last game we played at home and how crazy the fans were?' We're not going to remember the score. We're not going to remember who scored, but we're going to remember the rink and the fans and the atmosphere which is what it's all about, I think."

He's had a truly great career, much better than I would have expected.  More than anything though, that kid just gets it.  I'll miss him for that even more than his play.

Quote from: How many times this season have we let an opponent score within a minute of our taking the lead? Maybe the team just loses focus or something, but thankfully that quick goal to make it 1-1 didn't matter in the end.

that's a problem for all teams, unless the goal is a back-breaker. remember the bu game when cornell answered the first bu goal about a minute after? the team that is scored on tends to come back motivated on the next shift, whereas the scoring team tends to lack that edge for a shift or two. it's the coach's job to keep his players' heads in the game after a goal.

I'm sure there's a great deal of confirmation bias involved in that too.  I highly doubt teams are more likely to give up a goal immediately after they score than in any other minute in the game.  It's just that you notice it when it happens and correlate it to following the goal that was just scored.

Quote from: RichHUnfortunately, Lynah was left out of the accompanying photo essay.  10 photos, but two of Matthews.

Also, I've never seen the PU band at Baker Rink, and now I know that that new freak running around Ingalls is called "Captain Freedom."

Sitting next to them at "The Hobe" last year was enough to make us run down into the lower-level seats between periods.  I remember missing our band very much at the time.

Quote from: TimVThe Giants started William Beatty. a rookie from UConn at Right Tackle for McKenzie and Boothe commonly the first O-Line off the bench wasn't in until Seubert's injury.  The UConn guy did very well, and I was worried about Kevin's future with NY, but when Seubert went down Kevin came in and did a great job.  O'Hara and McKenzie are getting old, and Seubert, also older has had quite a few injuries, so maybe Kevin can stick.

Boothe has really become the backup guard, as opposed to utility lineman he was the past couple of years.  I think they really like Beatty as a tackle of the future, but it seems they're happy with Boothe on the interior line.

Quote from: dbilmesWe were lucky to win this game. We needed Davidson to choke on foul shots at the end of regulation and at the end of OT, which it did. And we needed a basket at the buzzer in regulation to send the game into OT, and a basket at the buzzer in OT to win the game after Dale, who got us into OT and carried us in the first part of OT, blew two FTs which would have given us a three-point lead. It's a great win, but our defense was terrible in the second half.

Really fun win to be at, but you certainly wouldn't draw it up that way.  The offensive let-down in the second half was not all that surprising.  You're not going to continue shooting 55% from 3, or whatever it was, that they did in the first half.  However, it was the 2nd half defense that was the real let-down.  One observation: it wasn't that the help-D wasn't there, as someone mentioned above, it's that it was AWFUL and necessary FAR too often.  The primary defender bit on every shot-fake, from a team that wasn't shooting all that well, allowing the player to dribble by and either get a layup around the late/weak help defense or pass to open teammate while we were scrambling around.  We're going to need to be a lot better defensively to win tomorrow night, beat Harvard, win the Ivies and/or make some noise in the tourny.

That rant said, I had a great time and it was an awesome win.  Really good stuff from Louis Dale carrying the team through the last few minutes of regulation when they really needed it, after scoring no points up until that point.  His missed free throws were certainly costly, but we wouldn't have been in that position without his play in the waning minutes.

Let's Go Red tomorrow night!

I'm assuming the consolation game is at 7, with the championship after that. Can someone confirm?

Yes, I can confirm.  Figure 9:15-9:30 or so for the start.

Good news everybody.  On a hunch, I checked the Garden website and there are tickets available, including those in the 300s, for $15.  Of course there is a gross $4.14 service charge, but way better than $50+.

http://www.thegarden.com/tickets/

Have at it.

Scroll down to 12/20, the MSG Holiday Festival, click "Get Tickets" and you can specify the day you'd like.  Then you can specify by price on the individual day's ticket page.

I must say that I had an initial negative (I think that word is even too strong) reaction to the post.  It was not that I didn't want to read it, but was just expecting more Cornell-BU analysis and had a "who cares?" reaction when I saw the contents.  I would have been happy to see this post as its own topic in the Cornell Mens Hockey forum or Other Sports and simply was surprised that it did not have to deal with Cornell-BU.  The post is most certainly valuable, just potentially misplaced.

Quote from: They were inappropriate for the venue: too syrupy. It's a hockey game, which means more ass-kicking and less glee club.

Amen. I can understand mixing in other parts of Cornell with hockey clips, but did they not try to find hockey clips? Off the top of my head I can think of several clips of the last few years that should've been shown - Sam Paolini's OT goal to win the 2003 ECAC, McRae's 2OT goal to send Cornell to the FF, Mike Kennedy's GWG against Harvard, Barlow's rush against Princeton last year, Greening's 2OT winner against Princeton, Barlow's GWG against NU, throwing fish at Harvard,  some big hits, and great saves. Put that together and you had a video to compete with BU's.

Unfortunately, broadcasting RedCast quality video over the "jumbotron" does not translate too well.  I guess we'll need to have more highlight-reel quality moments in the NCAAs, when we're on a real network.  I think that's something we can all get behind.
