Hockey / Pre Season - End of Season
February 21, 2025, 09:47:16 PM
Cornell Hockey follower since 1982
I can't think of a season with a wider gap between pre season expectations and actual results. Is this year #1?  I'm sure other elynah'ers have some competing years, but for me, this is #1 and therefore the most depressing.
I realize the season isn't quite over, and maybe I'm hoping I look like a fool, but I don't I'd lay odds on that as of now.
Any wider gaps people can think of?
And what about the opposite, where we were pleasantly surprised?

Bleed red but they don't deserve it at 9-5. That was not a team that deserves a bid to the tourney. Cant believe I'm saying this. But what the heck was that performance.

Quote from: George64John's daughter, Olympian Sarah, is running for Congress from Long Island.  Interestingly, she grew up in Great Neck, represented by Santos, but hopes to represent another district.

The fact she dated Andrew Giuliani should be an automatic disqualifier.
She may be Shiv, but she's our Shiv.  Gotta be better than the incumbent door stop.

Not sure I buy the analogy. Shiv was handed power and wealth. Sure Sarah Hughes had good skating genes and went to the finest schools alright but I would say that winning an Olympic gold medal, and one in perhaps the most high-profile event, is earning something the hard way.
AFAIK Sarah grew up rich.  So, yay for the medals, but at the same time, yes, if you have no other challenges in your life and can devote 100% of your energy to a hobby, you get really good at it.

I loved her skating.  But tax the fuck out of John's estate.
This thread is embarrassing. Whether Sarah grew up wealthy has almost nothing to do with what was being discussed—Trotsky randomly mentioned it anyway, because apparently he has a quota of diatribes against wealth accumulation that he needs to satisfy. Trotsky doesn't even know if Sarah grew up wealthy; he says "AFAIK Sarah grew up rich." Sure, maybe she did, but I don't know that and apparently Trotsky doesn't either. Moreover, the majority of people who attend elite schools (including those of us posting on this forum), and especially people who go into politics, were afforded immeasurable advantages over the average American.

So here we have a forum poster arbitrarily singling out a world champion figure skater for growing up wealthy, in a thread about the death of her Cornell hockey legend father, in response to a post about her running for office, even though the poster isn't actually sure she even did grow up wealthy, even though it has nothing to do with the subject matter, and even though having grown up wealthy is an extremely mundane quality for someone who attended an Ivy League school and is now getting into politics.

Couldn't have said it better.

Ha ha. Funny guy. Why don't you go back and count the number of times you use the f word in your posts, angry man. Some of us come to follow the hockey team.  Gosh you are bitter!  Maybe you get to confiscate John Hughes' money and retire happy.

I apologize to Ghana.  it came up only because I have supported many causes there and the name just popped up.  I've done more in Ghana than you know.  But the rest of the message stands.  I was just attacking the "rich people suck" attitude.

Yup. No credit to her. She had it easy. And after people die, it's not their money anymore. Let's make sure we never have another Sarah because if she was poor, we would never have a medal. We would be Ghana. Cool.

I interpret this to be trouble.  Plain and simple.  I don't want to focus on whether the decision was correct or not, but more on what the result of all this will be when the dust settles. Ivy sports may never recover.  The fact that Yale is down to 7 players on the Lacrosse team, just a couple of years after winning the national championship, is extremely concerning. We all were proud of the fact that the Ivys, and our school, proved that you could field teams that were national championship contenders while still prioritizing academics.  The transfers out of Yale would suggest that Elite players just want to play on Elite teams and won't stay just for the academics.  Obviously there are plenty of schools that provide excellent academics without the attitude towards athletics that the Ivys project.  This has always been the case but we now have a whole new level of disregard compared to other schools.  The impact on our ability to attract great coaches will also be a casualty.  We've been lucky in hockey, with Schafer, but not in lacrosse.  And now, why would a top-notch coach want to be here after the Ivys have prioritized almost everything else over athletics.  Why come here.

Imafrshmn U r an idiot   Give it a rest and enjoy your win.  Topher actually said this game was even going into overtone, when any moron knew that it was not. Cornell just could not put it in the net and Clarkson was lucky to win   Thats the fact. Enjoy, don't be a jerk....

Can we not do that?  Let's leave politics out of this thread. Its about hockey.  If you say, no I can't do it, okay, I'm out. Don't mess up a hockey thread.

Quote from: rss77Poor wing play on the face offs has plagued the team since the 9-0 start.  If Tesoriero could not pick up the ball cleanly we just weren't going to get possession.

Totally agree.  All those damn face-offs were lost off wing play....

This team did all it could all year, but do we always have to be the team that comes back but falls short, and lets everyone come back and beat us?  It really feels like crap!!!!
