Hockey / 06-07 Roster

Sorry if it is early for this, or if this is elsewhere and i missed it, but is there any speculation on what line combination Shafer will be using this year?  I am excited- as i think we all are- for the freshmen forwards.  thoughts on where they will be used?

I agree; something is a little weird with this team.  They just seem to lack something.  I guess we are all spoiled, but there was something about the 02-03 team and last year's too that made me confident they would always come back.  Last night, I didn't get that same feel watching the team.  They dominated the game, but even if they had won, I wouldn't have left feeling too confidant.  Maybe just reading too much into things, I don't know.

Last night, i was particularly disappointed by the 2nd and 3rd lines, they couldn't seem to get much going.  I know its been said a lot, and i know Schafer knows a heck of a lot more then I do, but I'd love to see the Abbotts back together.  Also, in the last 2 years I have not been impressed with Sawada, anyone else have thoughts?

Both games were unbelievable.  Duke was scary good.  during the second game, the opinion around me was that neither UVA nor Hopkins would be able to beat Duke if they played the way they did in a 2-1 (JHU) first half.  It was sloppy.  The second half was better.  Hopkins capitalized on a non-releasable man up at the very end of the first half to score two quick goals to start the second, then got a third to go up 5-1.  UVA cut it to 5-3 with a man-down goal, and looked like they might get the momentum, but Hopkins scored again to make it 6-3.  At the start of the 4th, the weather got crazy- it was so windy, trash was whipping all over the field, and the rain was blowing sideways.  I thought I was in the Crescent for a minute:-)   UVA came out strong, and scored 4 goals to take a 7-6 lead.  Then there was a thunder and lightning delay.  After that, well, it was just sheer chaos. Hopkins scored, then UVA w/12 seconds left, then Hopkins with 1 second to tie it up.  Its a shame UVA lost- their goalie stood on his head to keep them in it at times, and was absolutely the best performance i have ever seen.

And correct me if I am wrong, but doesn't Moy, who is an ECAC guy, manage the site?

Franklin isn't that bad, but its no Linc.  I am sure they can charge a lot more for tickets there, there is a lot more set-up in terms of concessions, and there is not a lot of parking around Penn's Campus.

In Philly, there isn't a whole lot to do around the stadiums, but its a quick subway ride to Center City.  Philly is also a pretty good hockey town- the Flyers have always been popular, and the Phantoms set all sorts of AHL attendence records a few years ago.  Does anyone know when the NCAA will announce its decision?  Because the Lax final four is in Philly this year, and i think it would be interesting to see how that goes- how many locals it attracts, etc.

Of course, I probably won't even be in Philly anymore by the time this would happen, but it would still be cool

No worries on offending me, I have thick skin :)  But I agree with you- most alumni going back (myself included) are recently removed from graduation.  And all this does is leave people with a bad taste in their mouths.  I understand the concern over liability, what i dislike is that the administration tries to hide behind other reasons, when CYA was the rationale behind most of the Slope Day changes in the first place.  And all most of the other changes did was force drinking behind closed doors- now the freshmen do a bunch of shots in their dorm rooms before going out to the slope, and end up just as sick, because they drink a lot, quickly.

What I find amazing about this is that so many colleges have some sort of spring festival (I am now at Penn, in the midst of Spring Fling) and don't seem to have these sorts of problems, while Cornell does.  It like the Lynah ticket situation- why not look at what schools in similar situations- popular sport, small arena, academic emphasis, like Duke for squeakball- do about tickets and try to use that?  Cornell's problems are not unique, yet we seem to have a much harder time solving them

I didn't say the administration should make it easy.  It just shouldn't make it more difficult.    And I do attend those other events as well.  But for recent grads (I finished up last May) with many friends still in Ithaca, Slope Day is a nice occassion to come back to.  Plus, I mean, its Snoop!

Excellent idea.  Making it difficult for recent alums to come back and remember how much we loved East Hill is a great way to get us to start donating $$$

Wish Charlie the best of luck from all the Faithful.  He will be missed, and we hope for nothing but the best for him at the next level.  Personally, I will be trying to get to see him play in Philly.

So as an Alumnus planning on returning, this concerned me.  While they will be checking ID's, its is ~98% likely they will not swipe them, meaning as long as you don't look to old they should work.

RatushnyFan, email me and I will put you in touch with someone who can help you out.

Ben, I can see how you think it might be wrong for Sneddon to win COTY (although I respectfully disagree, its not his fault UVM is leaving) but I don't know how it could be "plain wrong" for them to win the Whitelaw.  If they had won it, they would have earned it, far and square.  Although its all moot, because once again, the Whitelaw comes home to Ithaca

Would they dare put the opposing bench on the South Side??  That would be asking for trouble, I think.  who knows where fish would end up.  The townies are great fans, don't get me wrong, but you could have drunk students going into the visiting bench.  would be interesting, at any rate :)

Hockey / Re: TBRW Award Nominations

Peter Natyshak Award, Career Improvement.

MIKE IGGULDEN.  Is there any doubt?

Randy MacFarlane Award, Transcendent Beauty and Skating Prowess. Title says it all. Anne's favorite award.

Jeremy Downs

Dave Shippel Award, Scrappiness and Effort.

Topher Scott

Terry Gage Award, Determination in a Supporting Role.

Mitch Carefoot- edging out Chris Abbot and Dan Pegoraro, if only because he gets even less recognition, but will be next year's Iggy.

Mike Schafer Award, Leadership and Passion.

Knoepfli.  Came to play every night for four years.  One of my favorite players to watch.

Pierre Belanger Award, Most Loathed Referee.

The entire ECAC officiating team.  Just one?  Murphy, your choice

John Carter Award, Most Respected Opponent.

Silverthorn.  I wouldn't trade McKee for him, but he also gave us fits

Kevan Melrose Award, Least Respected Opponent.

Welch and LaTullip.  I am going to miss them, in a perverse way.

Doug Dadswell Award, Most Valuable Freshman.

Topher Scott.  Somewhat disappointed Sawada didn't play well enough to win it.

Joe Nieuwendyk Award, Most Valuable Player.

Matt Moulson.  Couldn't argue with McKee, but the Red are a great defensive team, and Moulson had to shoulder most of the offensive burden this year, and in the process put together one of the best years by  a Cornell forward in a long time.
