Hockey / Cornell-Minn. in Portland, OR

I'm thinking of trying the On Deck sports bar  -- http://www.ondecksportsbar.com -- in the Pearl District (NW 14th/Kearney). I called and the person didn't know what ESPNU was, but was told they got "pretty much every sports channel."

EDIT: Called back Sunday morning and was told they did get ESPNU, so I'm gonna head down there unless someone comes up with a better place.

Hockey / [OT] Colgate adds athletic scholarships
October 20, 2003, 05:58:14 PM
Interesting news ...

HAMILTON, N.Y. (AP) -- Breaking from its long-standing tradition of awarding financial aid solely on need, Colgate University announced Monday that it would begin offering a limited number of athletic scholarships as part of a plan ``to enhance excellence in programs across the campus.''

The policy, approved Saturday by the school's board of trustees, will go into effective with the class entering in fall 2004.

Wasn't Ian Burt a late addition after Pelletier left? That worked out fairly well. And did Marr and/or Chabot decide to come before or after Gartman left?

I remember Beano Cook lobbying for Penn-Harvard last year.

This might be a figment of my imagination, but didn't ESPN once broadcast a Cornell-Penn game on Thanksgiving Day?

Not exactly a banner week in I-A football, but ESPN GameDay at Harvard-Penn?

It's neat to see Ivy football get some recognition, but this is a real head-scratcher.

Hockey / Chartrand

Nice article on Brad Chartrand, who got his first career playoff goal for the Kings on Saturday, in Sunday's L.A. Daily News. Not sure when it will be on their Web site, but here's the address: http://www.dailynews.com/sports/index.asp

...and a tease:

LOS ANGELES -- Brad Chartrand lived in luxury Saturday.

The Kings forward scored his first career NHL playoff goal to key a 3-1 victory over the Colorado Avalanche at Staples Center and force a decisive Game 7.

But he remembers his roots.

He remembers those 14-hour bus rides and fast food team meals during a career that has included several stints in the minor leagues. A portion of his 2001-02 season was spent with the Manchester (N.H.) Monarchs of the American Hockey League.

"I've bused three games in three nights and come back on a Sunday afternoon when you've eaten McDonald's the night before," Chartrand said. "I've played in some barns that bring me back to my days in the wilderness of Manitoba. But it makes you grow as a person right? I knew coming in I'd have to be that guy, that bubble player that's going to have to prove himself.

"I'm not a first-round pick, not a superstar. I'm just a guy trying to fill a role."
