Hockey / Re: [OT] New York State alcohol laws
September 23, 2005, 12:54:31 PM
My birthday happens to be 1/2/67, so I remember this vividly.

During my freshman year on 1/1/85 New York raised the drinking age to 19 (just one day before I turned 18). However, they grandfathered in everyone that had turned 18 the previous year (most of my friends).:-(

During my sophomore year, on 1/1/86 they raised the drinking age from 19 to 21 and DID NOT grandfather anyone in. Once again I just missed the cut. :-(

Therefore many of my friends that had been able to legally drink for 1-2 years suddenly were not  legal anymore. I distinctly remember a bunch of them buying several cases of beer (5 or 6) and hoarding it throughout the spring semester.

The running joke among my friends and family was that they would raise the drinking age to 30 when I turned 21 :-).

Cheers,

Eric

That, and his total dominance in the face-off circle against the Sabres (::rolleyes:: ) in the Finals.

If the Sabres can't even be in it, I'll guess I'll root for Joey even if it means rooting for the Leafs. (Just like rooting for Harvard at the NCAAs).

Only 10% more game experience, true. However, he practiced and was with the team for a 70+ game season (plus preseason NHL and AHL camps). It's a long and grueling year.  That's the question pro scouts want to address: Can a College still put up numbers at the end of the season?

Hockey / Re: Why can't ecac teams score?
February 23, 2004, 10:36:21 PM

While I agree that some of the difference in scoring between the WCHA and Hockey East and the ECAC and CCHA has to do with the ability to recruit offensive talent, I think much of it can be explained by the competetive balance in each conference.

WCHA and Hockey East have the same top four teams every year with one "cinderella" that makes thing intersting. The same 2 or 3 bottom teams in these conferences are AWFUL....making a 10-1 game more likely.

However one of the reasons I like ECAC hockey is that "on any given Friday or Saturday night" any team in the league can beat any other.  The separation between our bottom and top teams is much smaller.  This makes every game important and exciting.

What struck me first about the picture is that there appears to be a layer of white vinyl (?) material covering the top of the goal underneath the netting.

I don't remember ever seeing anything like that at a hockey game. Do the goals at Lynah have this?

What's the point of the material?  To catch drips from the goalie water bottle?
Why is it there?  It would certainly prevent the goal judge from actually seeing a puck hit the top of the net. If the puck hits it the center part of the netting on top of the goal, you'll see a noticeable bulge. Obviously in this case the net didn't bulge because it hit just behind the crossbar.

Oh well. Water under the bridge...., but if I were Schafer or the league I might look into that vinyl covering.

Well if I would read other threads before posting I would see that this has already been covered  ::uhoh::

Sorry.

The Faithful also get a sentence or two of recognition in the latest Sports Illustrated  (Tom Brady on the cover). It's a story about Michigan and Michigan St. hockey, but we get credit (once again) for teaching the fans in Yost how to  be "real" fans.

FYI, if you look carefully at the crowd shot of the Michigan fans you can see a raised digit (the traditional "finger wave") :-).  From what I gather, Yost doesn't have the profanity police (yet).

I'll be at the Dartmouth game. It's only an hour from where I live.  I'll be with two kids in the "family" section (great deal for 4 tix, 4 dogs, 4 sodas...only $40) which is only two sections over from the visitor section.

See ya

Hockey / Re: Schafer Suspended One Game
January 21, 2004, 01:54:06 PM
If I have one complaint about Schafer's coaching, it's that he seems to complain and get on the refs A LOT during games.  I think it has cost the team at times when the refs seem to be determined not to make a call that would be viewed (by the other team) as a direct response to his complaints. All of a sudden the whistle seems to be stuck in the ref's pocket and only the most egregious calls are made.  (Maybe Schafer like the games played that way because he thinks/knows we have a physical advantage?)

I always wonder if there is a cumulative effect.  Does it carry over to the next Cornell game the guy officiates?  I don't know.

Schafer proabably deserves the suspension but if it got the attention of the league then maybe that's a good thing in the long run. Hopefully, he got it out of his system and there won't be any petty retribution by the refs.

I couldn't agree more....a one goal game with 35 seconds to go and a face-off in our own end. Sheesh.

Obviously you've never had the pleasure of Schaefer in the can  ::yark::

Schafer = great coach
Schaefer = great jingle, god awful beer

Also whoever thought of having sushi and Schaefer together is  ::screwy::

Just my humble opinion. :-P
