Hockey / Re: NCAAs 1st rd. Cornell vs. MSU

I'm going. I live in Ann Arbor, so an easy trip. I'm going  with my MSU alum wife, so a house divided. The situation here is tense. One of our daughters went to Cornell and another went to MSU, so extended family turmoil as well.

I stand corrected - thanks. Living now in Ann Arbor, I have the locally approved view of the schools to our south. Boring, boring, boring...

I was also at the 2005 regional in Minnesota, and that was against Ohio State. My Gopher fan friends expressed dismay about how our uniforms made us look like "Sconnie".

I went to Grand Rapids for the NCAA regional in 1997. We beat Ohio State and came up short against NoDak, who ended up winning it all. I thought to myself, we have a coach..,.

Sorry folks, I meant this to reply to BearLovers post. Semi-rookie mistake...

I live in Ann Arbor, one of the epicenters of the academic/athletic divide. Your bar about not being able to flunk out does not factor in things like this (with full positivity spin):

The bar for athletes at a school like Michigan is totally different than at Cornell. After living in Ann Arbor for 10+ years, I can see the dark side and I'm happy about that.

Quote from: upprdeckwhen you are out shooting teams by 15-20 and out chancing them hopefully you start out scoring them.. Thats at least a place to start.

Gave up a PP and break away and an extra attacker goal. much like Harvard a break away and PP goal.

Young team making mistakes, but not getting out worked and thats good to see..

Lets see if coming back home they can do some damage and even in losing a game they played better week 2, lets see if week 3 continues the trend.

I completely agree. In both games this weekend, they were the better team for long stretches.

I'm guessing Morgan Barron is not going to play opening night, but scroll down to see the Ranger coach's take on him: https://nypost.com/2021/01/11/mika-zibanejad-missed-start-of-rangers-camp-with-covid-19/

Quote from: redice1985 ECAC Tourney in the old Boston Garden..   We happened to be sitting very near the students that year.

When the RPI mascot skated onto the ice (it was some strange thing that looked like a bumble-bee), I thought to myself: "what the fuck is that?"   Soon, the kids were chanting: "what the fuck is that?" over & over!

It was as if they were reading my mind (I know, a short story)....   On the way home, whenever I lol'ed, my wife said: "I know what you're thinking about".

I remember that well. I also think 1985 was the year when, after beating Clarkson in the consolation game, RPI and Harvard were doing their warm-ups for the championship game. The Cornell section started with a "Both teams suck" cheer. It made everyone feel better.

Sorry - posted this without noticing someone beat me to it earlier...

Students have been told to not come back from Spring Break and "attend" classes remotely. Not sure what that means for athletics. Here's an excerpt of the announcement:

Most significantly, we will move to virtual instruction. We are asking faculty to begin that transition now so that after spring break all instruction – for the rest of the semester – will be online. We will be asking all undergraduate students and many professional degree students to leave campus at the start of spring break and to remain at their permanent home residence, completing their semesters remotely. (When essential, we will honor requests for exemptions).

Quote from: billhowardIf you want to show a youngster the restaurant / bar you frequented in Collegetown, the answer is: It's gone.

They're not ALL gone - I had dinner at Rulloffs before the Friday Northern Michigan game. Unfortunately, the building that they are in will be torn down in June. College Town Bagels will move across the street to Sheldon Court, but it's not clear if Rulloffs will find another location.

Quote from: jkahnI asked Coach about next year's OOC schedule at the Q&A at the Fortress pre-game reception.
North Dakota at Lynah (2) - per a player's parents this is our opener
CU at Arizona State (2) - although Mike said something about a tournament, so I'm not sure if they are both vs. ASU
Yale at MSG
AIC at Lynah
Cornell at Providence
Statler Hotel shows unavailable October 30 and 31.::pissed::

It's parents weeekend. Unfortunately for us hockey fans, the Statler is blocked off and reserved for the parents. Or at least that's how it worked when we were first year parents a couple of years ago.

Quote from: SwampyCornell, Harvard renew age-old rivalry Friday night in Cambridge in what promises to be a 'real electric environment'

Donato said "We know their fan base also travels well, so we expect it to be a real electric environment here."

Meanwhile "Said Schafer: 'We'll probably have more fans than they'll have there.'"

I loved reading that article. I was at the game with a group of friends and at some point after the beer can was thrown, one of them yelled "Only a Harvard fan would throw a full can of beer!". There was an epic Nor'easter in Boston that night and we managed to get up to Dartmouth the next day and saw them lose again. On the drive back to Ithaca on Sunday, someone hung a sign on the I-88 exit sign in Bainbridge (if memory serves me correctly) that said "Harvard Sucks and Dartmouth Swallows". That made us all feel better.

I hear you on the face-offs, but they are far from the only problem. Ierlan is the only positive. No chance for them to go anywhere this season. Sad to say.

Lurking behind my joy of watching this year's team was a feeling that there is still a talent gap between what we have and what it takes to win a title. Does Jeff Teat play hockey?

Outshot the "most talented" team? Moral victories in the post season are meaningless. I agree with the poster about a go to guy. This team did not have that.
