Hockey / Re: Harvard 4, Cornell 3, Final

The refs didn't actually blow a whistle and signal for a penalty until the bottle came out.  The fish was immediately after the goal.  The bottle was as the players skated to the bench and that's when the ref called the penalty.  There had at least two or three other fish instances previously that the refs let slide. The bottle was a direct shot at the goalie, too.  Not 100% sure but that's what the evidence suggests as I saw it.

I was sitting right behind the perpetrator.  The penalty actually wasn't called for a fish but rather the plastic bottle that followed the fish.  The ushers converged, my buddies and I pointed him out, and they did absolutely nothing.  One usher talked to the frat boy who threw the bottle but did nothing else.  After the final whistle, another usher scolded the offender. He just stood there, three sheets to the wind drunk, with no conception of what he'd done as the fans around him berated him, even starting a "that guy sucks" chant after the fourth Harvard goal, yet the ushers still let him remain in the stands.  A total disgrace for the team, the University, and the dedicated and civil fans, townies and students alike.

Hockey / New Cowbell Guy
December 23, 2010, 08:38:47 AM
Hello Everyone,

I am writing to announce that the Cowbell will be changing hands next semester.  I have passed the Cowbell to Andy Hu, a friend of mine and a junior in the ILR School. I have no doubt that he will do a fine job.

I made this decision in light of various academic and extracurricular obligations that have before and will again preclude me from attending some of the road games.  In the interest of maintaining the Cowbell tradition, I gave the Cowbell to Andy, who even without the Cowbell has attended almost all of the road games since last season.

Andy will assume Cowbell duties effective immediately, beginning with the games in Florida.

Grandparents sold their house on Marco Island and moved back to Ohio, so I'm afraid not.

Can we still get tickets at the student price from the Prudential Center box office?  I have two for myself but a friend who may want to join at the last second.

Agreed on all points above with one additional observation to Kyle's point.

Quote from: Kyle RoseMy observations from seeing the game in-person:

(1) Cornell looked great in the first period and skated well with Yale, notwithstanding a few whiffed passes.  By the third period, they were gassed, and looked absolutely awful in the last five minutes of the game: probably the worst I have ever seen them play.  E.g., D'Agostino could barely stay upright.  (I'm curious to know what % of the game he played, because he looked very, very tired by the end.)

The guys were gassed last night because they were not changing the lines quickly enough.  Pinned deep in your own end for one and two minutes at a time is a surefire way to become exhausted and you can't change until you are sufficiently up-ice.  The breakout is their biggest problem.  Going behind the net and inviting the opponent to pressure you just isn't smart hockey.  Get the puck in the corner, move it to a wing on the hash marks, up the boards, and a cross-ice pass in the neutral zone and off you go.  If I could learn that in pee-wee hockey, and it worked, why not use it here?  Back to basics, boys.  Move the puck, keep fresh legs on the ice and good things will happen.

That said, one other humorous note from last night's game.  CBS wanted to show the cowbell in the second period and asked me with 10:25 remaining in the second if I could come and talk to the reporter in the aisle.  Clearly, that wouldn't work.  So the reporter came into Section B, stood next to me, confirmed our location and my name with the camera people. I told her it would be the next whistle but I still think she had no idea it was coming when she looked at me strangely when I started playing.  When I finished, she informed me that the camera crew had not found us and that she would come back and try again in the third period.  She never came which unfortunately meant that none of you got a view into Section B last night.  I guess the chaos of Lynah just wasn't made for TV and I'm just fine with that.  We weren't about to modify tradition for fifteen seconds of fame on a channel nobody gets anyway. ::innocent::

Hockey / Re: Cornell 0 St. Lawrence 3 (final)
November 06, 2010, 11:18:38 AM
I could hear the voice of my father coaching my pee wee teams in my head last night as I watched this game.  "GET TO THE NET, STICK ON THE ICE."  Nobody got in front of the SLU goalie for very long, if at all, as Cornell scrambled around the Saints' zone flailing for some semblance of puck control.  Our forechecking was non-existent last night and I can recall any one instance of any sustained offensive pressure, midway through the second period.  Playing dump and chase hockey just isn't going to win you a lot of games.  The concept of the offensive triangle was completely lost on our guys last night.  That said, St. Lawrence dominated the neutral zone as well, picking up most of the loose pucks or cleanly stripping possession from the Red as they came up ice.  Frankly, it was shocking this game wasn't 3-0 by the end of the second period.

Also, Mowery took three penalties last night (all in the third period, a cardinal sin in hockey) and the whole team took eight for the game.  To quote my father again, "You can't score from the penalty box."  The 5 on 3 was the death sentence last night as the Saints collapsed on the net and just moved the puck until the right winger found the twine over Garman's left shoulder.  Even when we had power plays, we could not get anything going, unlike previous years' teams, which were highly effective on the man-advantage.

You can't blame Garman for this one.  He made some outstanding saves and only gave up one goal that may have been his fault: the second goal which went through his five-hole as SLU effectively cycled the puck around the Cornell zone, utilizing aforementioned pee wee hockey concept of the offensive triangle.

Bottom line: Back to fundamentals, stay out of the penalty box.  Let's get them tonight.

Any reason this game is listed on my season tickets schedule (lower right corner of the sheet) as a "scrimmage" instead of exhibition?  Is there some significant difference?  Tomorrow's game is still an exhibition.

For those curious, the computers didn't crash this morning!  Instead, by 6:31, I was saving my confirmation and going back to bed.  We'll see how Friday ends up

There are singles available, though not in the Cornell corner.  A ticket is just a way in the door though, so I'll probably just instruct the crew to buy the singles and we'll find a place to sit together.

So what's the deal with the Thanksgiving Newark game? Neither Cornell nor Colgate lists it.  I spoke to the ticket office on the phone a week before the schedule came out and was told that Schafer was about to return from vacation and it wouldn't be long until they finalized the paperwork.  Guess they were wrong?
