Hockey / Re: Cornell-Ferris State In Progress
March 25, 2012, 12:23:24 AM
Tough loss. Amazing how quickly momentum can shift in a hockey game. After coming back with the tying goal rather quickly I thought we had all the momentum at that point.  Add to that a 5-min major and  I figured this game was ours for the taking (assuming we'd score). Guess not.  Seems like almost every hockey game I watch a goal is scored a 2-on-1 breakaway seconds after a guy comes out of the box.

Cornell does so well in the first round of the NCAAs (forget 2010) but can't seem to get over the hump in the quarters.  I think we're 1-5 in our last 6 appearances in the quarters or something like that.  After beating Michigan it seemed like we had a great opportunity to make a run to the finals having to face only Ferris State and Union (rather than a NoDak, Minny, BC, etc) to get there.  But having said that, if somebody were to have asked me at the beginning of the season would I be happy if we just got to the quarters I would have said "hell yes".

Hopefully we can make it back to the tourney next year.

And thankfully there is no Pairwise in hoops.  Two-game lead with three to play "should" be safe.  Would like to see them ice it before the finale @ Yale though.  Foote and Wittman sb first-team All-Ivy.  Dale second team?

Amen to seeing Duke go down in an early season tilt....again.  When will the pollsters realize that they're overrated?  And I didn't read the boxscore but I'm dying to see how many goals Greer and/or Danowski scored.  They're STILL playing, right?  I think Danowski has played in 125+ games in his career.

Hockey / Re: Cornell 4 at Dartmouth 5

I guess I'm just not convinced that a sweep next weekend and one win in Albany will "get er done".  I think it will depend on what teams from the other big conferences do that will determine our fate. We need Miami, UNH, and Denver to hold serve in their tourneys and not let a lower ranked team to win out. THAT might do it.   But...come on....imploding against Dartmouth?  Not particularly encouraging.

Ummm....not being melodramtic, being realistic.  Pairwise # 16 puts us right on the bubble.  Yeah, sure, if we don't lose one of the next two, win our first series, AND win one in Albany we have an outside chance.  Last year wasn't a lock until we pulled out the Princeton game. Too bad we've been backed into a corner (again) such that we have to at least make the semis or finals to have a chance.  Not saying we can't do it but melting down against Dartmouth doesn't give me the same level of confidence as last year's team.  I guess we'll have to just wait and see how we do against RPI and Union next weekend.

Updated pairwise not posted yet (that I can find) but I'm guessing we'll go to 13-14++.  When you take into account the auto bids from the lower conferences I think it's going to be an uphill battle.  I guess if we make it to the ECAC finals like last year we have an outside shot...maybe. However, if we DO make it to the NCAAs I like our chances since we seem to own the first round.  And if we get placed in Albany we (finally) get some home cookin'.  Would love to face, say, Wisconsin and give them a taste of their own medicine.

Total meltdown.  How do we expect to go far in the EZAC tourney if we can't close out a game like this?  I don't think we have a chance of making the ncaa tourney unless we win the ECAC.  Meanwhile Yale was down 4-1 to Clarkson with 12 to go and finds a way to win.

So the next time we get an Olympics I guess that would eliminate Bill Bradley, JC Watts, and Jim Bunning as possible torchbearers.

Hockey / Where was Ken Dryden?
February 14, 2010, 10:22:25 PM
Maybe I missed the explanation by Bob Costas but I don't know why Dryden wasn't one of the "final four" to light the torch in Vancouver.  I know the hosers have to be pc and have two males and two females.  And I know Gretzky was a lock for one of the male spots.  But Steve Nash chosen for the other spot?  Are you kidding me?  Dryden won an NCAA title and 6 Stanley Cups.  He went to an Ivy League school, excelled in his sport, and then became involved in his country's government.  Nash, on the other hand, was a surfer dude at Santa Clara which I don't think even made the round of 16 during his time. Yes, he is excelling at his sport but nothing like Dryden did.  Nash has two MVPs but no rings.  Dryden won all kinds of awards in the NHL to go along with his 6 rings.  Not even close. And I'm curiuos what Nash's "life after sport" will look like.  I bet it has nothing to do with getting a law degree and getting involved in government.

Dryden would have brought diversity to the table due to his age and accomplishments.  I don't buy the "we wanted to have as many sports represented as possible" line.  Canada is known for one thing...hockey.  Heck, they should have run their lumberjack champion up there over Nash.

Like I said earlier I probably missed the explanation.  I'm guessing he just couldn't do it physically.  Nothing else would make sense.

Other Sports / Re: Lacrosse Recruiting at Cornell
May 27, 2009, 06:31:20 PM
I'd rather have the "diamond in the rough" guy who blossoms into an All-American (like most of Tambroni's guys). It would appear they have more to prove since they were overlooked by the big schools. (ex Pannell)

And I don't know how much stock we can put into these top recruit rankings.  What are they based on?  Heck, there are so many different lists.  After this year I'm confident that we can win it all without a team loaded with top recruits.

I haven't looked at the replay, so I don't know the technicalities, but SU deserved that goal.  Or rather, Cornell deserved to be scored upon if they can't clear with 27 seconds left in the national title game.  :`-(:`-(:`-(
I think the second part of your statement is unfortunately very true.  I know I'm being a Monday morning QB but I'm convinced that if Tambroni had called a time-out at that point there would be a victory parade going on right now on College Ave.
I am not convinced this is true.  Not long ago Princeton dominated lacrosse and they have no scholarships either.  If Tambroni can build on the reputation he has created, the recruits will come.  We can be elite.  Maybe not as dominant as Syracuse, but then again nobody else is quite Syracuse.
The recruits HAVE come (Seibald, Glynn, Mcgonagle (sp), Hurley, Pittard, Mitchell, Moyer, Belisle, Pannell, etc) and we ARE elite (depends on how you determine elite I suppose).  But all this won't bring a championship.  Just look at what happened in '07 and now '09.

We didn't need any other players than those that were on the roster today. (three 1st team AA, one 3rd team AA was as good as any other team) Title game, 3:50 to play, up by 3, and we have the ball. We just didn't get it done.
Was last year heartbreaking? Disappointing, sure, but I don't know about heartbreaking.
Yep, heartbreaking because any time we get schooled 15-8 at home in the NCAAs to a lower-seeded Great Western team it breaks my heart.

Between Hockey and Lax we have two pretty big pills to swallow.  It's almost as if there's a curse on us or something.  Like the "curse of the Bambino" that plagued the Red Sox until 2004.  In fact, this game reminds me of the famous Sox-Mets game 6 of the '86 ws.  (Sox one out away from winning the series, nobody on base, two strikes on the batter, etc, etc)

Let's hope we don't have to go 86 years like they did to break the curse.

Yeah but...  As the coach, Tambroni should have been able to see that things were not "settled properly" at both of those moments.  I'm not blaming him though.  He normally is spot on with his timing of the TOs. (ex UVA and Princeton games)

It will just go down as one of the many "strange but true" things that happened during the last 4 minutes of play.
