Hockey / Re: Who muzzled the band at Starr?
November 16, 2008, 01:42:59 PM
I'm really sorry.  My comment came across as way more mean than I expected.  That was really not my goal and I apologize.

The point I was trying to make was, as KRG and others have said, there was no point in the pep band getting potentially kicked out over something silly like how frequently we could play davy.  My comment was that I had hoped that former pep band managers would be more ... sensitive to the fact that event staff at away rinks are not always the most rational or fair towards the pep band.

It is easy for someone unconnected to criticize the band for not standing up to the colgate rink staff, playing anyway and risk repercussions from their or our athletics departments.  I just feel that people who have felt these repercussions personally should not be the ones leading the criticism.

Again, I'd like to apologize.  I really was not trying to be mean.

This coming from the pep band manager who cried at Brown in the fall of '05 when she was scolded by an event staff and threatened to be kicked out.

Hockey / Re: A note about the Cowbell

When a member of the pep band calls your mother through the Cornell Annual Fund and then proceeds to talk with her about my cowbell playing before condescendingly and mockingly emailing the rest of the pep band, one must realize things are getting out of hand.
Someone really did this stuff?::wtf:: Called your Mom?!!!?

What happened to the adage that "if you do not have something nice to say, better not to say anything at all" (at least in some social situations)?
As someone who would like to see Cornell's endowment increase, that person should be fired for being awful at their job at the Cornell Fund.  .

Mitch, I'm really sorry to hear that this happened to you.
I'd like to set the record straight about this particular person.  The pep band member in question did not call Mitch's mother in order to talk to her about cowbell playing.  She was going through her list of people to call, and mid-conversation realized that she was talking to a family named Alva, and decided to strike up a conversation about the cowbell.  The calling of the Alva family was not malicious, the conversation about the cowbell was not malicious.  In fact, this person's email to the rest of the pep band was not malicious at all.  In this email, she even made a request to the pep band that we get someone to "coach" Mitch (as many of you here have suggested we should have done).

The rest of the pep band's response to this email was...less than kind.  That is indefensible.  But the specific person being referred to is the  least at fault of anyone in the pep band, and does not deserve to be the focus of elynah's anger.

Though to be fair, if Mitch wanted a pep band "rhythm coach", he could have asked.  We would have been happy to, if he had asked.

this is only my personal speculation. Riley Nash chose Cornell over other "stronger" programs because he really wanted to play hockey with his brother (the Daily Sun said so).  I really think that Riley won't leave until Brendan does.  Maybe this is misplaced optimism, but I think the Nash brothers will leave at the same time, and I don't think that time is this summer.

Hockey / Re: The Rest of the ECAC Year

Quote from: Jim Hylawe will have a difficult time vaulting into second or third, but if we win 4 games we should finish fourth.

I disagree, I think 2nd or 3rd are both plausible.  In my mind, a win against either Princeton or Q-pac would make it very possible for us to jump over that team.  They are each only 3 ahead...with the win we'd only need a single point that they don't get over the other 5 games, and both of them have @CLK left.
I remember not being overly impressed with Q when they were in Lynah earlier this year (though I cant remember any details at the moment).  And having been at both ECAC Clarkson games this year, where they beat us two different ways, I unfortunately have high expectations for the Knights for the remainder of the season.  I am confident in their ability to "help us" with a win in their own arena, at least against Q.  So at the very least, taking 3rd from Q should be doable.

Both My Old Cornell and New Cornell Fight Song are too long to play as a regular cheer.  And for the most part, the full-song sets that we play are more performance-based, not strictly intended for fan participation.  We try to show off the fact that, unlike most of the other ECAC bands, we have enough songs to play at 4 games in one weekend (last weekends SLU hockey, columbia womens and mens bball, and CCT hockey) and only repeat one single full song.  So, mostly because of their lengths, we only play those two during timeouts or at the end of an intermission (when there is not enough time to play a full song).

As for the words, I would personally post them somewhere if people wanted them, either in a thread on the forum, or on some other website.  Its school spirit, knowing the words to these songs, almost as important as knowing the first 2 verses of the Alma Mater. [little bit of history:  back in the 1890s or so, the dining halls would spontaneously burst out into school songs during meals].

As for the "soccer" chant...the band has 50 people in Lynah at each game, all of them are dedicated fans, and some of them are very stubborn towards the old ways.  Like all fans, some things they like, and some things they don't.  For better or for worse, it is impossible to simply say "get into the chant" and expect the band to automatically be 100% supportive.  Just like (apparently) it is impossible to tell all of sections A and B to simply "get into the chant".
