Quote from: BearLoverThere's a strange fixation on this forum about Q's questionable academic standards when in reality almost every school in the country, including almost every D-1 hockey school and some in our own conference, has a similar lack of standards, especially for those on the hockey team.

I think it is born, at least in part, from the ECAC's traditional positioning as a conference of schools that take academics seriously. Adding Q rather than RIT or Holy Cross undermined that positioning.*

That's at least in part because Q is so insufferable in it's marketing of itself. If the university positioned itself more as a serious school and not as a boarding school for wealthy kids to drink in new haven (or was quieter generally), it'd probably be less of an issue too.  My experience in fairfield county is that it's not taken super seriously and is wildly too expensive.  They run billboards bragging that they were included in USNWR rankings. Not where they rank just that the magazine includes them. It's be great if they improved their academic profile but for a lot of folks they'll always be seen as the diploma mill Trotsky sees.

*- yes I know it wasn't strictly a choice of those three at the time to replace UVM. But the perception at the time was that RIT and HC would be better cultural fits for the conference than Q.

Notes:
1. Sorry for the formatting. I'm still working my way into the 21st Century.
2. I realize admission rates are not a very good measure of academic quality. And there may be considerable self-selection. E.g., Clarkson's emphasis on technology may screen applicants without considerable STEM backgroun in high school.

Yikes! Is admitting less than ten percent of your applicants something to be proud of?  Something that makes these schools better than others?  Or is it just bad marketing that wastes the time and resources of the AI admissions bots?

I think it would be better to target the proper audience and admit somewhere between 30% and 60% of their applicants.  We are clearly wasting the time and maybe even the hopes of 75% of our applicants.

A better measure of school quality for me would be the number of accepted students who decide to attend.  That reflects on the safety school considerations.

You knew somebody would say it, didn't you?

Reading his obituary I realized that I have no memory of Ken Dryden's face, replaced by his 1970s white goalie mask.

To me his only real loss, and the world's as well, was in the 2006 Liberal Party leadership convention, which would have placed him in line to be PM.

His priorities reflect his values, I hope acquired or enforced in his time at Cornell:
Quote from: Ken Dryden"Learning is at the core of our future—for a person, a society, an economy, a country," Dryden said. "Learning is our only real security, our only real opportunity, and this program, years in the hoping, was the first big step towards truly lifelong learning."

In my heart I know I shouldn't post this for the reccord:  in 1967 Ken Dryden did not lose a game, although he tied BU in the Boston Arena Christmas tournament.

Unfortunataly Dave Quarrie played a game against Yale, which he lost:

QuoteWith BU and Cornell now tied atop the ECAC standing with no more games between the two neither could afford to slip much if they wanted to win the ECAC championship. The Big Red headed home for their next game against Yale and welcomed back David Quarrie in net for his first game since being injured. Though his ankle had not been badly hurt it was the otherworldly play of Dryden that kept Quarrie out of the net. In Quarrie's return to action he didn't play poorly but he wasn't able to overcome his team's defensive lapses, bad penalties and inability to score when they had their opportunities. Even worse was a second period goal that was waved off by the referee that could have given Cornell the game. It was, however, two power play goals by Yale in the third period put the Bulldogs ahead but with less than five minutes remaining Sophomore Ted Coviello tied the game at 3–3. Despite outshooting Yale 112 to 49 in the contest Cornell was unable to earn a fourth goal and it was Yale's Jack Morrison who scored the game winner at 6:09 of extra time.[10]

In 1970 Cornell backstopped by Brian Cropper went 29-0.

Can AI do this job?  Can AI interview the coaches and the players?  Can AI understand team dynamics?  Can AI understand the thrill of a man down goal with less than two minutes left?  a game winning goal with 10 seconds left?

Can AI drive a car in the snow? in the snow at night?

Does AI have enough self-understanding that it can even ask those questions about AI?

Quote from: upprdeckCornell could host now if they put in a bid.  But that requires prep and money and they dont find it worth the effort.

I do agree if would cool to see best of 3 regionals though

It would be wonderful for Cornell to host a regional.  We could do it in the Syracuse War Memorial (home of our 1967 championship).  We could start by working to bring back the Syracuse Invitational home of many Harkness and Bertrand era legends and memories.  (In that '73 game against Colorado College I remember we were being crushed until someone speared Dave Elenbaas and we came roaring back on the five minute major.)

I believe in the regionals.  They bring fans from four schools together.  They centralize coverage, which brings in a better more polished broadcast team.  And they prepare teams for the bright lights of the tournament championship.  I believe the biggest impediment to women's hockey today is they play their full tournament on campus.

Didn't we lose the coach, or at least acquire a new one?  Wouldn't that have some impact on the rankings?  Or is it all talent?

In case anyone wonders where, Ben Russell went to Northern Michigan:  https://nmuwildcats.com/news/2024/7/26/ben-russell-named-assistant-hockey-coach.aspx

I have to wonder what all this turnover means to the team next season.  That is a lot of transition in one season.  How will this change the organization of the defense?  We've lost two leadership coaches there.  \\

What specialties does this new coach bring to the team?  Is he here to teach or learn?

I guess Cornell is correcting an error from some 50 years ago.  Back when Harkness left everyone said it should have been Len Ceglarski, then of Clarkson, over Bertrand.  Let's hope it works out better than this episode of Car 54.

Unfortunately that was not our only classic game against them.
Wow, didn't know about that game!  Didn't think it could get much worse than the 3-OT loss, but it can!  :(
That 1973 box score should probably read 19:27 for the final goal, or 9:27 of 5th period, depending on how you look at it.  Back then they switched sides after the 3rd period, played a 10 minute overtime, then switched sides again for the next 10.  Regular season overtime was 10 minutes back then, so they would refer to it as double overtime - but it makes some sense to adjust it if one wants to compare with the way it's done today. To make that game even more painful, we had a 2 on 0 breakaway in the first overtime and didn't score.  I had seats behind the net Cornell was defending during the first overtime, so for that overtime I moved down and stood in a walkway at the other end, as I wanted a better view if we scored and not if they did.  I was back in my seat for that 2nd o't.  One other aside - two years earlier, listening to a hockey game on CBC radio, I had heard an interview with Bert Olmstead (former NHL player), where he mentioned his son was interested in playing college hockey in the states.  I went into Dick Bertrand's office and discussed it with him - and he said he had met Bert once at a clinic and he'd follow up.  I don't know if we ever had a chance at getting Dennis Olmstead, but two years later he was a freshman at Wisconsin and won every damn faceoff in that final minute including the one that set up the equalizer with 5 seconds left.  There are some painful things you never forget.

Want more pain?  Dave Peace thinks he may have scored the GWG in that game had the puck not gone through the netting a la Bobby Butler's goal in Albany against us in 2010.  His wish is to see a video (likely non-existent) of the OT periods to verify his belief.
The only NCAA games with CU that have been for sale are the 2006 UW and 1969 DU games. When I bought those, years ago, I got them from the NCAA and you could put in a request for other games. They said that when they got enough requests they'd notify me to purchase it. Well I never heard about any and now the NCAA directs you to buy them from Amazon, with no option to ask for others. I'm emailing them about that, but doubt any help.

I remember this game because Cornell had a two on zip in the overtime and 'hit the backboards.'  I am not sure but maybe that was Daved Peace who hit missed the net, or not.

And I will mention Peter Shire, not because he really deserves top 50, but he did have the hardest slapshot and scored the prettiest goal I have ever seen.

Actually, although you doubtless went to Cornell, you are wrong about the phrasing being wrong.  To implement is to carry out, execute, put to use as well as to provision.

So some hominids implemented computers with formulas which were implemented (executed) by the computers realising a national champion in football -- subject of course to your acceptance of the result.  I myself wait for that blue fielded Broncos to come crashing down to earth by the low lifes of the SEC.
