Hockey / Romano Traded to Islanders from NJ
June 30, 2009, 08:34:32 PM
After a great year in the OHL with multiple awards, the NY Islanders are signing Romano to a 3 year entry level NHL contract. Romano was born and raised on LI, so this has got to be a dream come true. They traded for Ben Walter this afternoon. Good Luck Tony,  you were always fun to watch at Lynah. I guess your early departure from our beloved Big Red, is paying off for you.   Congrats......

October 14, 2008, 08:19:33 PM
LOOKS LIKE HES BACK, AFTER A TOUGH YEAR IN LONDON DUE TO HIS SHOULDER SURGERY HE HAS SCORED TWO GWG AND LEADS THE PETERBOROUGH PETES IN SCORING. I HEARD HE HAD A AHL OFFER BY NJ BUT DECIDED TO PLAY ANOTHER YEAR IN THE 'O' FOR A BETTER OFFER. READING SOME BITS AND PIECES HE HAD A GREAT CAMP IN NJ AND SEEMS TO BE AN IMPACT PLAYER IN THE OHL.
BEST OF LUCK
I think you are right, it will depend somewhat on who drafts him and somewhat on who his "family advisor" is.  Drafted that high, he stands to get a decent Major Junior contract too, which could sway him immediately.

Also, I think you are right, if he does make it to Cornell, it will not be a full 4 years.  It will be a one and done or 2 and out for him.

The top programs deal with that every year.  You count yourself lucky for what time you get with the very best players.  See Minnesota, Maine, North Dakota, etc.  The all recruit with the idea of losing freshmen and sophs.

It is the price of success.
Since his rights are owned by Swift Current in the WHL this will probably be the biggest obstacle for him. Edmonton is not a College recruiting team. All their past picks have not worked out in US College Hockey. Major Jr. is just more suited for the skilled and Pro level player. And since we [CU] never produce any NHL caliber fowards[except for Moulson, the jury is still out] he will do what Romano did, go to a better Hockey (Happy) place....Happy Gilmore

Hockey / Re: Romano will not be back next year

Its sad we lost such a talented player. We all wish him well and we are sure we will see big things from Tony in his hockey career. The CHL is the best place to develop talent and thats why over 75% of the NHL is from these three leagues(Q,W,O).
Hope they bring Milo back, I agree with Ari, IMO 14 forwards are not enough and if Milo can score goals he will add to our offensive threat!
Good Luck Tony in London, where better then to play for the Hunters, and maybe the Best team in all the CHL. They have placed more NHL talent then any other team the past 6 years...
You will be missed greatly!!!

Ari, yes he should of dumped the puck, but did you see his teamates watch him instead of get into some position to support him. Someone has to move to open ice. Watch the game on the net, I am not sticking up for him but this game requires 5 players moving and communicating, but on the blue line in a zero zero game, dump and chase is safe....

Also, anyone who is wondering about the CHL, I spoke to his Father last evening at the game. He did read many of these threads, he laughed and his comments were none to express on the site. He did say he would love to meet a few of the brain trusts who no nothing about his son or Hockey for that matter. Book smart and street smart are night and day. He also asked that please respect his son's name plus the other playes and Coaching staff and stop all the non sense comments. If you have nothing good to say why put someone down... makes sense! They should all find something else to talk about. He also noted that he will never go onto this site again, but he understands the love all the Cornell fans have for this program and great school. He respects the fact the each person is entitled to their own opinion. He felt that some of the comments made are only made by people who wish they could play this game. Monday morning Quaterbacks with their statements are better left with their opinions to themselves. He said the Coaching staff and players do a hell of a job...All should respect this plus its only a game....Also, regarding the comments of going to the CHL, the Devils love him at this School and believe in not only creating great players but smart students make better Hockey players. He said Hockey is like no other sport it is Chess on ice, I liked this statement.

He made a point is saying that Coach Schafer, The NJ DEvils and himself have a better idea of Tonys future the the opinions of this site....

This is how much the Devils think of him. This info. is from the Devils via the 'HF' web site

NJ Devils top 20 NHL prospect list...

Rank: 11. (NR) Tony Romano, C, 6.5 C, 19
Acquired: 6th round, 178th overall, 2006 NHL Draft

The Devils have had great freshman seasons from many of their prospects, but Romano, the former Atlantic Junior Hockey League star gets the top billing. Romano was the leading freshman scorer for the Cornell Big Red, and finished tied for fourth in team scoring with 19 points. His nine goals were also tied for second best on the team. Some were unsure if Romano would be able to carry over his excellent play from the lesser-known AJHL to the NCAA ranks, but he proved this season that he was definitely game.

Romano possesses a fantastic set of offensive tools. Though only standing at 5'11, Romano bulked has up 15 lbs to 185, showing a commitment to get stronger. As a more diminutive player, there will always be knocks on Romano's strength, but his superb skating skills and willingness to go to the high traffic areas will more than help offset that perceived weakness. Romano went from not being ranked at the beginning of this season, to almost making it into the Top 10 by mid-season. The Devils have to be thrilled at how quickly and easily Romano adjusted to the step up in competition and the best part about his rapid development is that he is only 19 and still has three years of college eligibility remaining. He is only going to get better.
One more thing, Ari he also likes your write ups and honesty, but these are NCAA Hockey players not paid professionals, go easy....

Anyway LGR

With Romano, his game isn't suited to the college game.  He plays a very selfish game.  He doesn't want to play defense, He doesn't care about defense, he doesn't utilize his line-mates.  It is all about him scoring goals.  Assists are not even in his lexicon.  His game is very well suited for major junior hockey, not college.  It is for this reason that he will move on as soon as Cornell is out of the playoffs.
I've seen most of this year's games either in person or on video.  I couldn't disagree with you more.  Romano is neither more nor less advanced in total positional play at this point than Vinnie Auger or, going back further, Kent Manderville or Trent Andison was at the comparable point in their respective careers.  Every finesse player hits a wall where his pure talent isn't enough to carry himself and his team, and he needs to become a cog in a wheel.  This is nothing new.  Watch Brandan Wong playing for Q this weekend.  Everything you are saying about Romano could as easily be said about him.

I love Romano's talent.  He'll learn to fit into a team offense and defense, and he'll be a great addition to the squad.  As we get more explosive offensive players, we are going to see a painful D learning curve for many of them, because of the nature of the Junior A development path.  They learned to showboat to get noticed by the scouts.  Now they learn the way the game is really played.  Same story, going on 80 years of hockey now.
In response: to dilligaf, do you have a clue what you are stating. First Major Jr. produces more NHL caliber players then the NCAA almost 5 to 1.  Posts like yours are a joke and can not be taken serious. The Coaching staff must like Romano's play or else he would not play as much as he does. Do you know him and have you discussed his future with him. Are you his agent. I think you should can it. You can hide behind this site but face to face I believe your a coward.

Hockey / Re: Freshman (Tony Romano)

This is from the NJ Devils web site regarding Romano. Also, we sit near ex. Cornell Coach and NJ Devils Scout Lou Reycroft, he thinks he will be in the Devils organization after his sophmore year. About checking issues, we heard Tony has a bad shoulder and if you remember the recent Yale game, he hit the backboards attempting to break up a 2 on 1and left the game. Why would a player of his talent even think about running players??? But he does finish checks. Yes, we agree that sometimes his teamates look him off, but thats stupid, this is a team game, those players are simply Jealous. Greening is also a wonderful and highl skilled player. He and Romano won't last here, but they should make it as long as they stay healthy.

Tony Romano-Freshman, Cornell University

At 5'11, 185 lbs., Romano is one of Cornell's smaller players but he brings an element that Cornell has needed more of this season – speed. Romano is an instinctive, high-energy player who is also quick. He has also proven to be quite an offensive threat as well. In 16 games this season, Romano has posted 15 points (seven goals, eight assists). His 15 points rank second on the team and he co-leads the Big Red with seven goals. Of Romano's seven goals, three have come on the power play. Romano posted his first two collegiate points (both assists) back on Oct. 28 versus RIT. His first collegiate goal came on Nov. 4 versus Yale.

Romano, who just recently sat out two games for some off ice matters, rounds out the Devils group of fab four freshman players this season. The Devils sixth-round draft pick in the 2006 NHL draft and former Atlantic Junior Hockey League scoring star was a bit of an unknown on draft day, but has quickly emerged as one of the Devils more offensively gifted prospects in the system. Romano has the hands of a sniper, and appears to have all the tools to be a point producing centerman. Like fellow freshman forward Perkovich, Romano is only going to get better and could rocket up the prospect ladder if he continues to develop like he has so far in his first season in the NCAA.

Who is at fault??? The Coachs and 1st unit. Its still a JOKE, they can not score because there are NO Goal scorers on that line. The 2nd unit is on the ice for the last 20 to 30 seconds of the PP. The 1st unit is out there for 1 1/2 minutes with NO shots.. at least McCutheon, Greening, Romano get something accomplished. Its sad 29 games later and still No idea how to Coach a PP.

Hockey / Re: Cornell 2 Brown 5 postgame thread

You are 100% correct. Scrivens was horrible 3/5 goals were his fault. He never moved out only back. Isn't the goalie stick supposed to be used for something, like poke checks etc....

Change the dam lines...Can Gallagher stay on his skates for one single shift??? WEAK ON HIS SKATES.... And  lets not forget the inmature, bad timing type penalties.

Make one POWER LINE who can skate, be creative, score goals...
Romano is far the best offensive weapon on this team. He is exciting and makes his own chances. Do you think anyone can ever pass him the puck or its easy to watch like the other 4000+ at Lynah do his thing. Our section at LYNAH can not wait until he is out there, because he is always moving the team in the right direction. Last weekend w/o him, we were dead, there was no spark what so ever...Put McCuthen and Scott with him and let them just play. McCuthen is strong and can make space for Romano, Scott is creative enough to draw his opponents, but he has to move the puck quickly, not hold onto it so long...Scotts production went down because why, he was moved off of Romanos PP line look back at the stats, there is more players in the same boat .....Check please...Play that line every 3rd shift, forget 4 lines we need ONE line to produce not two or three players every other game. Make sure Seminoff who has been great all season is out there with those three. This will work!!!

And what about MILO, give this player a chance on the PP or with another line like BITZ, MILO and SAWADA. Let MILO stay in the high slot area and get him the puck, he is a proven scorer in the USHL etc....
Another thing, why does Mugford get rewarded with ice time when every game he is good for at least one stupid penalty, Scali would be better because he is more skilled, but Mugford is very good on the PK.
We are all frustrated, just think of the team whats going thru their heads...

Hockey / Power Play that Works
January 13, 2007, 07:20:51 AM
Game in and out the same thing seems to occur, the PP is horrible. Therefore looking back at the Power Play, certain players seem to be a common denominator when we score. The statistics do not lie. Does the staff look at this? Why players who can't score, move quick, pass or skate laterally are out there is a mystery to all! Zero
 • for eleven [11] that's got to stop. What we did was go back game by game and looked at the power play combinations that worked. Here are our findings, players on the ice when we score. Please take in mind that our Captain gets the most time and his production is poor, stay on the PK, no Coach would stand for this. Why he is still out there is crazy. Try #18 MIKE KENNEDY instead, can we say HARVARD GWG. Anyway here is the skinny for who is on the ice for the PP goals, enjoy:

RIT: 10 3 8 12 26
Brown: 10 3 8 12 26
Yale(maybe the most dominant game of the season except for UNH):
3-PP Goals- 26 10 12 8 3

Dartmouth: NO PP but at the end what combination produced: 8 26 12 10 3
Same combinations ay!

This is where percentages started down the toilet
Princeton: 29 10 12 3 26  //  8 27 15 17 5
Quinnipiac: 26 24 29 3 12
Wayne g1: 15 11 27 17 8 // 15 8 27 11 17 // 29 26 3 10 26
Wayne g2: 10 3 12 8 26
RPI: 10 27 8 15 24
Union: 12 26 29 20 3
UNH: 12 8 27 29 10 // 8 15 27 3 24

LOOKS LIKE this is the First Unit: 26 12 8 3 10. Considering how poorly we have done there was some consistency each game. Coaching staff please try this, it worked. Also, # 10 numbers dropped since this combination was broken up.
HELP!!!

All of us agree...In Florida Bitz did nothing, all year he does not shoot, pass even HIT, the biggest player on the team. He plays great in the corner. . A Montreal Canadian Scout was at the game and stood right behind us. We asked him between the 3rd period what he thought of our team. These are his comments.  They seem to make alot of sense.
The team needs to start moving the puck better. Get some odd man rushes.
Sawada, Scott and Romano are the only three players who seem to be playing and can create plays with speed and skill, they can beat one two three players by themselves. They should be playing together because they are similar stlyes plus they are all really smart and have good hockey instinct. They would be able to move the puck effectively and put some in the net. He also liked Milo, because he showed agrressivness and speed.  This is coming from a Professional, we are just passing this along to the troops. This is also the 5th time he has watched the team. We askek who he is interested in and would not comment.

Thank God, you seem to be the only one to see this,do you want to be an assistant???? Do we have 3 blind mice on the bench...? We have 1 PP unit...Gallagher, Greening , Romano...Why Milo is not on the point runnig the dam thing is a mystery. The kids play better, maybe add Romano to the 1st unit and put Milo on the 2nd. Or make the Gallaghers unit the FIRST PP and give Kennedy, Scali and MIlo a chance together...Bitz and Carefoot can't skate well enough and are not quick enough and do not see the ice as well as the creative Freshman...0/7 on the PP is sad..when will they change, maybe they should read this information to assist them...Goodbye FLORIdA TILL NETX YEAR...
