Hockey / Re: So. Cal Viewing 3/26/-27
March 23, 2005, 11:05:54 AM
Our only viewing on Saturday will be taped, at 9:30PM at the Grand Avenue Bar (on ESPNU on Directv).  The live broadcast is on Altitude Network's "Alternate Channel", Ch. 658 on Directv, and the Grand Avenue Bar doesn't pay for that channel.  (See other threads re the complexity of trying to verify that a bar with the SportsPak has Ch. 658.)  As for Sunday's game, Grand Ave. is closed.  I am looking into finding a bar for Sunday.

March 20, 2005, 09:22:48 PM
It was good to see all of you who turned out for the viewing of the ECACHL Championship game in downtown LA.  If you haven't been receiving emails from me, or didn't give me your email address at that game, contact me at howardm1@sbcglobal.net and I will put you on the list.  We will have viewing events for the Minnesota venue game(s).  I will post the viewing details on this thread early this week-- hopefully by Wednesday at the latest. -HowardMadris

Hockey / L.A. Viewing 4/10, 4/12: Updated:
April 03, 2003, 08:53:54 PM
If you're not on my email list and plan on attending, please email me so I can put you on the list and notify you of any unexpected changes.  Here's the viewing info:
Thursday, April 10th at 9AM Pacific, at JP's Pub, 1101 Wilshire
>Blvd in Santa Monica. (Don't confuse this with the same address in
>downtown LA!) JP's is on the Northeast corner of Wilshire and 11th
>Street, opposite El Cholo Restaurant.  As a special bonus, we will
>be watching highlights of Cornell's 1986 season during the
>intermissions (if JP's VCR works).  That team made it to the NCAA
>Final 8 and was led by Joe Nieuwendyk.  Coach Schafer was also on
>the team.
>  IF we win the UNH game, we will be in the NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP game,
>for the first time since 1970, against either Minnesota or Michigan.
>If Cornell beats UNH in the semis, we will be watching the
>championship game on Saturday, April 12th at 4PM Pacific at Dublin's
>Pub, 8240 Sunset Blvd. in Hollywood (NOT 7PM (eastern) as you might see on the net.) Dublin's is a few blocks east of La Cienega Blvd.  They have valet parking.  I expect at least 50-75 people for that game, and perhaps many more.

Hockey / Re: Why I said "No" to the Cornell Fund
December 05, 2002, 12:50:14 AM
I think the pay per listen concept is fine for people who did not go to the particular university, but it is obscene gouging when applied to people who attended the university.  For instance, if the University of Alabama or Oklahoma or Ohio State charged to listen to its broadcasts, it might make sense, because my perception is that there are thousands of fans who support those teams who DID NOT EVEN GO TO THE SCHOOL--they are just from the particular state, and maybe they moved out of state later or somehow can't pick up the broadcasts on the radio.  Someone who did not go to the school does not have a right to listen for free.  Yet even Ohio State airs its games on the net for free!!  (I don't know about U. of O. or U. of A.)  But with respect to Cornell, the ONLY people who listen on the net are alumni-- and particularly the ones who [were] most loyal.  Maybe I am naive, but as a Cornell '88, do I get ANYTHING other than a diploma, for having spent a huge amount of $$ on tuition and other expenses for four years at Cornell?  The "whiny 22 year olds" of whom Mark speaks just shelled out (or owe) over $100,000 to Cornell.   Is that meaningless?  Don't we get to be part of the "Cornell community??"  A "community" doesn't nickel and dime its members.  Maybe they should install pay-toilets at the Cornell Club in Manhattan-- might generate a few extra quarters.

Hockey / NCAA Games on TV?
March 18, 2002, 01:40:43 AM
Will either the QU or UNH game (if we beat QU) be on TV?  What network (i.e., NESN, Empire, etc.)  On Directv, will they charge extra- I remember a few years ago the CU-North Dakota gane was on the Minnesota Sports Channel, but having the package of regional sports channels on Directv was not enough, for some reason- it was still blacked out where I live- in L.A.

We'll be watching the Lake Placid C.U. game Friday night at 8PM PST on TAPE DELAY at Johnny Foxx's on Motor Ave in Culver City.  Game will be shown on their VCR.  If we win on Friday, the championship'll be shown there on tape at 8PM Saturday.  DON'T COME IF YOU KNOW WHO WON.  ALSO, THEY DON'T HAVE SATELLITE SO DON'T COME TO WATCH LIVE.  I have Direct TV  and will bring the tape(s) over there for viewing.

Hockey / Watching in L.A.

We'll be watching the Cornell-Yale game 3/9 at 4PM PST at Johnny Fox's, 3387 Motor Avenue in Culver City, phone 310-559-4725 (the bartender may not know about it, but trust me, we'll be there).  This is the official bar for the Cornell So. Cal. Alumni for the hockey games.  The following weekend is the ECAC tourney- we'll be there too-check the alumni newsletter or elynah.com next week for the details.  For the NCAA's we'll be watching- but the site is to be determined.  The games next week will be shown there at night on TAPE DELAY, so please check this site for the time, and PLEASE don't show up if you know who already won.  But the 3/9 game is live.    Email me with any Qs at howardm1@earthlink.net.  -Howie
