So... you just throw them on the ice? Or is this one of those contests like the puck thing where you try to throw the bears closest to a mark on the ice?

It seems like they should just have the bears collected at the door, rather than having the fur get all yucky and matted from the ice for no reason.

Yes, that is impressive of them.  It's certainly not, you know, their job or anything.

Well, if they're not getting thrown on the ice at the same time as fish, that's already an improvement.

More importantly, they'll be thrown on two weeks *before* the fish.  I'd even give a Zamboni a few weeks to really scrub the fish germs out of the ice. :)

I think this belongs in this old thread...

Apparently UMD had some issues with their version of the teddy bear toss:

I love that the blogger called it the "fourth annual fourth annual Teddy Bear Toss."  :-D  Kind of like how I just celebrated my 9th 29th birthday.

Why not have a raffle where the winner gets to take Topher home  and promise to bring him back next morning none the worse for wear? No danger of two-minute minors affecting the game outcome.

It seemed like such a good idea. I mean, local fans donating teddy bears to needy children during the holiday season. It's a great idea. What could possibly go wrong? As Stephen Colbert reminds us, when bears are involved, anything can go wrong. Minnesota-Duluth decided to hold their fourth annual fourth annual Teddy Bear Toss this past Saturday. Fans were instructed that throw their teddy bears onto the ice after the Bulldogs first goal of the game.

Bulldogs fans had a little trouble with the whole "first goal" concept though. Most of the bears made their way onto the ice after the first goal. But then a few errant bears were tossed onto the ice after Drew Akins scored to put the Bulldogs up 2-0. In accordance with NCAA rules, an announcement was made over the PA that the Bulldogs would be penalized if anything else was thrown on the ice. When Duluth scored their third goal, to make the score 3-0, two more bears were thrown on the ice, and the Bulldogs were assessed a two-minute penalty. The Bulldogs almost escaped unscathed, but Bemidji's Travis Winter scored a powerplay goal with 9 seconds remaining on the penalty, to make the score 3-1. The goal seemed meaningless at the time, but Bemidji came back to tie the game at 5, and eventually win in overtime. The Teddy Bear Toss is a nice tradition, and hopefully it continues at Duluth. But next time, they should probably have the toss between periods instead of after a goal. [/quote]

More importantly, what if they got shut out?  There would have been a lot of wasted teddy bears...:-P

Although the WCHA seems wide open, occasionally they do play some "D" in the WCHA. I knew Minnesota shut out CC earlier this season, so from the WCHA results page [http://www.collegehockeystats.net/0607/schedules/wcham], here is what else I found (just conference games). Hey look, there was even a scoreless tie!
