Title: All-Access 2006-07
Post by: cbuckser on September 15, 2006, 12:30:03 PM
It seems as though the content this season will be the same as last season.    However, All-Access is using a new platform that those of us with older PCs cannot use.  It also requires PC users to use Internet Explorer.  People with Intel-based Macs can supposedly download a beta version of something called Boot Camp that will permit them to run Windows XP on their Macs.    Other Mac users are also out of luck.

I e-mailed CSTV last night to ask if there was a way to directly get the feeds through Windows Media Player.  As expected, the answer was no.

Everyone needs to write to CSTV and Cornell Athletics and complain about this.

John -- eLynah has Moderators?

I'll include the platform complaint in my letter, but for my education, does it require extra expense in coding or equipment for them to support other platforms?  If so, perhaps non-IE users could pay a premium for enduring CSTV's service, while we non-tech-savy sheep will continue to pay a different sort of price for our vassalage to Redmond.

You can set things up in either a platform-independent way or a platform-specific way.  If you've already designed things for a specific platform, then it will require effort and cost to go back and make it work on other platforms.  It's not clear to me whether it's any more difficult just to follow platform-independent standards in the first place.

Bottom line is, it worked just fine on Linux etc last season, but their "improvements" have made it Windows and IE-specific.
