Title: Duke reinstates lacrosse
Post by: billhoward on June 06, 2006, 08:58:14 AM
Duke announced it is reinstating its lacrosse team with a lot of probationary rules. According to the NY Times, three of its recruits went elsewhere (Virginia, Georgetown, Penn) and some others haven't committed. Mike Broadhead won't be allowed to reapply for the job; assistant Kevin Cassese, a Duke grad, will be interim head coach.

The new, player-written team code of conduct covers underage drinking, disorderly conduct, and the all-purpose harassment. Penalties are (strike one for the first offense) counseling and community service, (strike two) a three-game suspension and (strike three) a season-long suspension.

Meanwhile, their predicament hasn't had a sobering effect on all the Duke players. Midfielder Matthew Peter Wilson, 21, of Durham, ran a red light May 24 (sorry, he *allgegedly* ran a red light), got stopped, allegedly registered a mind boggling 0.21% BAC, and was also nabbed for some minor marijuana possession charges. Since he didn't kill anybody, Wilson should get some kind of award for being able to drive a car at a BAC level (assuming the police BAC tester was in fact accurate) where most people can't walk and more likely fall unconscious. Duke said he was suspended from the team. Maybe he should have been kicked off for being terminally stupid twice over, once for driving in that condition, and twice for doing it when his team is under the magnifiying glass. Way to support your team, Matthew.
