Big step down for the facility in terms of sponorship. Goes from nationally known brand to local paper.
maybe now I can get a diet coke...
Can we just go back to calling it the Knick?
At least this will help to reduce the confusion between the Pepsi Arena and Denver's Pepsi Center (particularly helpful in 2008, when the Pepsi Arena is hosting the NCAA East Regional while the Pepsi Center is hosting the Frozen Four).
The local paper will promote the heck out of every event, and with its reach extending halfway to Pittsfield, Mass., and all the way north to Glens Falls, the sky's the limit for attendance in 2007.
Maybe in time Union will make it into the building. ;-)

Well, it's usually easy to get tickets for the ECACs, so I dont see why not.

ZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzziiiiiiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnggggggggggggg!
Seriously, I see moving to a local, media sponsor (the TU) a step up from a national, disinterested, apathetic corporate monster. That is, if we have to have corporate sponsors at all. Is it too much to ask these asswipes to either shell out or not but keep their grubby names off the buildings?
Yeah, I know, in the current iteration of the Gilded Age, it IS too much to ask. So let's get to The Irrationally Violent Backlash, and pronto. My pitchfork is sharp, rested, and ready.

He says posting to an internet message board about a college hockey team... probably while checking his email and getting his daily news update. :)

The previous sponsor of the Knick/Pepsi/TU building was reported to be the local Pepsi bottling company - not the national corporate entity.

County signs contracts for new Pepsi Arena
The Business Review (Albany) - January 8, 1997
Albany County and Pepsi-Cola Allied Bottlers Inc. of Latham signed contracts today making Pepsi's title sponsorship of the former Knickerbocker Arena official. The 10-year agreement is worth more than $8 million in cash, marketing, promotions and advertising. The contracts were signed by Albany County Executive Michael Breslin; John Strachan, Pepsi-Cola Allied Bottlers' chairman of the board; and Bob Belber, general manager for Spectacor Management Group, which manages the arena for the county. The three men also lighted the arena's new marquee, which will highlight upcoming arena events and provide advertising opportunities to additional corporate sponsors. [/quote]
[Q] Now concert-goers try to figure out what they'll call the Times Union Center, since many say the new name is a bit of a mouthful. The Times? The Center? The TU? The T.U.C.? The TUC perhaps? [/Q]
Do you think playing in the TUC will help our pairwise? :-P

It will also help avoid confusion when Cornell makes its annual appearance at the West Regional (to be held at the Pepsi Center in '07).
I've already booked my room at the Red Lion next March for only sixty bucks a night! :-P

Actually, I think that if the trend persists next year, Cornell will get sent to the midwest regional in Grand Rapids as the #2 seed competing for the right to play #1 seed Michigan. Tour of the big ten continues...

Unfortunately, in 2006 the major conference for my field is a few weeks later than usual, thus it will be on NC$$ regional rather than ECAC quarterfinal weekend. Yeah, I already compared the dates.
On the bright side of a possible Grand Rapids trip is that you will not have to go through Wisconsin again!;-)

Of course, we'll lose to Michigan in 5 OTs. And Michigan will win the women's championship that weekend.
