Title: Cheering for tonight
Post by: Stewball on March 05, 2006, 05:29:31 PM
Not sure if this is mentioned elsewhere... who are we cheering for tonight? SLU so we play a TUC in round 2, or Brown so we have an easier opponent? How much would sweeping Clarkson (if it happened of course) help?

Playing Clarkson would put our future more in our own hands.  Assuming we beat (preferrably sweep) them, they are either no longer a TUC (as the 1-1 hurts us now) or they are but were are then 3-1 against them.  Otherwise, we have to hope that whoever they play beats them.

well, we have a 7-4-1 tuc record (0.625). if we sweep clarkson AND they remain a TUC, we'd have a 9-4-1 record, or 0.679, plus any TUC victories we would pickup in Albany (goal = 11-4-1, or maybe 13-4-1 if niagara becomes a TUC).

right now, of the 9 teams we are losing a comparison to now, in only 4 of them do we have the weaker TUC (UNO, miami, wisc, minny). since the better RPI is the tiebreaker, unless we surpass miami wisc or minny in rpi, a better TUC record won't do it for us (this is of course assuming that their TUC records do not also rise as a result of their own tourneys).

then again, those wins will also increase our rpi as well.

so it seems like 2 clarkson wins may not help us out as much as we'd think, though there are alot of other factors here. then again, anything adding to our stats certainly helps come selection time.

Consider this. If Harvard plays Clarkson and Cornell plays Q and both high seeds sweep, Harvard flips the Cornell comparison on TUC because they would get two TUC wins and Cornell would get 0. Of course if SLU wins, then both teams play TUCs.

Comparison to 2004 be damned, I'd prefer to see the Knights in Lynah again next week.

Well I'm assuming playing a better team (i.e. Clarkson) would help or RPI more than playing the weaker opponent.

Do we want to cheer for the outcomes that help us most in power / RPI rankings ... or for the team that's going to give us a better matchup in a week? Remaining 5- to 12-seeds before Sunday's St. Lawrence-Brown third game:

 5  St. Lawrence ?
 8  Clarkson
10  Quinnipiac
11  Yale
12  Brown ?

As No. 3 seed, Cornell must play the second-highest seed among survivors. Who would you rather see roll into Lynah next Friday: Clarkson or Quinnipiac?

If Brown loses, we get Clarkson. OTOH, maybe No. 11 Yale has a better chance of knocking off the top seed than No. 12 Brown does next week.

Don't rain on the PWR-obsession party, Bill.  Everybody knows that the only thing that matters is the NCAAs.  Beating Harvard, winning the ECACs... all meaningless, as long as Cornell gets a 1 slot push in the pairwise. ::rolleyes::

well i am personally cheering for brown. I think that if cornell is destined to do anything in albany and beyond playing any team or clarkson wont matter - they will win if they will win.  my reason, getting tickets from the clarkson ticket office is impossible. I have off, my wife has off next weekend, yet we cant find tickets. Q would be easier to get tix from. call me selfish...

Well, of course we go to the dance if we win the ECACs. If you're assuming or hoping we make it, then the better our ranking, um, hopefully, we don't get sent to a place beyond driving distance of the faithful. So for that reason it would be nice to have all the right teams win and lose to help our comparative standing.

Probably the most important thing right now is how many natural defensemen dress and play effectively this weekend and, one hopes it goes that far, in Albany.

We really think Quinnipac is an easier opponent next weekend than Clarkson?

Yes?

Regardless of the PWR implications, I think our inconsistency this year has shown that we can't take anyone for granted. It would be idiotic to assume that we'll sweep Clarkson. Though we wouldn't glean any PWR boost from playing Q, I would feel slightly more confident about our ability to beat them in a series than I would about our ability to beat Clarkson. And in the interest of getting to Albany, I would choose to face Q.

H1, H2, and H3 are pretty scenic interstates though.

Maybe we should put all updates on this thread instead of PWR and others.
