Yale 3 Union 2 5ot
Man, I dont want to have to play clarkson, it looks like their on fire.
Thought I'd start the thread. Who should we be cheering for tonight. Clarkson became a tuc which hurt us so we would want them to lose. What about the other games, would any team winning help us out?
Ill post scores once games start.
We do want Clarkson to lose because of that, you're right. Their RPI is very close to .500 and I have to imagine it could drop below the magic number with a loss or two.
RPI is at .4864, which would seem to be low enough, but you never know. Union is at .4826.
Niagara sits at .4919, but I'm not sure they (and their two losses to Cornell) will be able to make it to TUC status without winning the CHA tournament. Still, root for them because it helps Cornell's RPI.
Cornell loses the comparison with North Dakota based on a narrow margin in RPI. Root against them. (The same thing is true about Denver, but they don't play tonight.)
Cornell loses the comparison with Nebraska-Omaha based on a narrow margin in record against TUCs, but UNO plays Bowling Green (not close to being a TUC tonight). Root against UNO in the later rounds of the CCHA tournament.
With bonuses added, Harvard is ahead of Cornell in the PWR (despite their enormous suckitude). Root against them (as if I needed to tell any of you that).
RPI 1 QU 0 after 41 seconds. :-D
brown 2-0 early in the 1st....wow
brown 2-0 early in the 1st....wow
Supposedly on their first two shots, too.
Deerticks tie it up 1-1.
Clarkson takes the lead 1-0 off a Cayer goal.
According to the Clarkson feed, Yale and Union are tied at 1.
Bobcats score a 5x3 goal to lead 2-1. A decent QU crowd up in Troy.
In a game with no obvious effect on our PWR, UCONN and Sacred Heart are tied at 1 midway through the 1st. There are some local and Cornell ties. It is Senior night at UCONN and the last home game for UCONN co-captain and Ithaca High graduate Chris Uber. Sacred Heart is coached by Shaun Hannah, Cornell 1994. And because it is SENIOR NIGHT, the game is being broadcast on WHUS (internet streaming!). Apparently the UCONN band is feeling good after the Men's basketball team won at least a share of the Big East Title, that they are at the hockey game too.
Whoa, QU 3 RPI 1.
After 1 period, UCONN and Sacred Heart now tied 2-2.
Sacred Heart is currently at the top of the AHA, so I guess if they do win the AHA tourney and get the auto-bid, they could *possibly* play a role in Cornell getting sent to ND, right? ::nut::
Feeling pessimistic in Indiana ;-)
According to the Clarkson feed, Yale and Union are tied at 1.
I was mistaken. At the end of the 1st, Union leads Yale 1-0.
stolen from the post by min in the thread from last night:
"Here's another way of determining Cornell's next opponent:
Exactly 0 upsets (all higher seeds advance)
Union
Exactly 1 upset
Union (if Princeton or QU wins)
RPI (if Yale or Brown wins)
Exactly 2 upsets
Union (if both Princeton and QU win)
RPI (if Princeton and Yale OR Princeton and Brown win)
Clarkson (if QU and Brown OR QU and Yale OR Yale and Brown win)
Exactly 3 upsets
QU (if QU, Brown and Yale win)
Princeton (all other three combinations)
Exactly 4 upsets (no higher seeds advance)
QU
In sum, in terms of percentage of becoming Cornell's next rival (if I'm not mistaken):
Union (25%)
RPI (25%)
Clarkson (18.75%)
Princeton (18.75%)
Quinnipiac (12.5%)"
From USCHO forums, Yale has tied it a 1-1.
Tech up 2-zip.
Tech up 3-zip...
In the 2nd period, UCONN goes up 3-2 on a ppg by Chris Uber.
[soapbox on]
The UCONN band is playing "Brass Bonanza" when the huskies come on the ice and after goals. That tune should *only* be played in reference to the deceased New England/Hartford Whalers (no, I do not recognize the Carolina Hurricanes as the "former Hartford Whalers").
According to the announcers, the UCONN band only shows up at hockey games once a year, so I guess they really don't have much "hockey music".
[Soapbox off]
They play it at UConn hoops games too...
They play it at UConn hoops games too...
Oh dear. I must have missed that because I was sooo incensed that the UCONN band was playing "Sweet Caroline" in last week's Villanova game. I have only been tuning in to UCONN hoops the past few weeks. Unfortunately, it isn't something I have time to track regularly.
3-2 Q.
As a long lost Whalers fan, I have to say, if any team wants to take on brass bonanza as the banner of Connecticut hockey, I can't object to it being UConn.
4-0 Clarkson after 2.
At the end of 2 periods, UCONN-Sacred Heart tied at 3.
Brown just scored... 3-2 brown over slu in the third
union ties it in the 3rd
Clarkson is who we want in my opinion. This is the playoffs and the more battles the better. I would rather see a team that they are going to have to be at the top of their game for the entire weekend. Cornell has played their best hockey this season playing against tough teams and rarely did they decisively beat the lower tier teams.
Finals:
Qpc 4 RPI 2
Brn 3 SLU 2
Clk 5 Prn 0
Yal-UC 1-1 in third
Brown wins 3-2 and lives to fight another day.
Quinnipiac wins 4-2 and sweeps their first ECAC playoff series.
Clarkson ends Princeton's season 5-0.
Yale and Union tied at 2 with a few minutes left in the 3rd.
Union and Yale going to OT... again. Union's 5th straight playoff game that has gone to OT apparently.
UCONN defeats Sacred Heart 4-3. I'm glad Chris Uber got a goal and had a good game tonight. UCONN is waiting for results from other games and will be seeded somewhere between 6-8 in the AHA playoffs. Sacred Heart has a chance of finishing first, depending on what Holy Cross does. IIRC, the AHA quarterfinals are just one game and not the best of 3.
Also, I was surprised to hear that the UCONN men's hockey team does NOT give out athletic scholarships. The women's hockey team does, but that is probably to be Title IX compliant. UCONN recently brought their football team to D-1A so I wonder what other men's athletic teams also had scholarships reduced or eliminated.
Union and Yale going to OT... again. Union's 5th straight playoff game that has gone to OT apparently.
Yup, all three against Clarkson went to OT last year. I was actually at those games and it was a really great series.

Believe so.
12:42 left in Yale/Union OT.
What's the format these days? Unlimited number of 20-minute sudden death overtimes? I'm guessing since they're playing at least one 20 minute OT, it's not a "first team to three points" kind of series, right?

First OT over at Union...Mayotte with some big saves in the last minute.
Going into the second OT in Schenectady. Longest game in the history of D-1 Yale. (announcers talking about a longer game they had as D-2 ::wtf::)
If anyone wants to listen to the Yale-Union game, here's the URL to the Yale feed:
http://www.wybc.com/
The Union feed, which was listed here in the message with all the game links, is maxed out at 64, and has been for some time. The Yale feed seems to be working just fine.
Andy W.
64 people listening to WRUC and my stream keeps rebuffering every 5 secs. I'm at home on a modem with itunes. The Clarkson feed didn't do this last night (which was also itunes and from home).
Elliot, are you listening locally on the radio or online?

Assuming that's me, I'm listening online. No problems.
The Yale announcers say the crowd has "thinned out." What kind of fan could possibly leave a tied playoff game? Sheeeeeesh!
Andy W.
St. Lawrence outshoots Brown 56-13 and loses 3-2. D'Alba seems to be warming up. Friday night in SLU's 3-2 OT win Brown was outshot 54-27. Odds still don't favor Brown, but what an amazing job in goal the first two nights.

Wonder if everyone's favorite oversized Union frat boy is still there...

Apparently the Yale team had an 11:00 curfew last night...
Do we at least get an intermission between OTs? I drank a lot of tea tonight. ;-)

I'm depending on an intermission so I can catch the end of UNC (beating) Duke.
Do we at least get an intermission between OTs? I drank a lot of tea tonight. ;-)

Yes, there are 15-minute intermissions between all 20-minute periods.
3rd OT after this intermission that just started ::twitch::
Triple OT coming up.
For the 5th period intermission discussion, are we dedication, fanatical college hockey fans, or um, are our social lives lacking something. ::worry:: Also, we will need suggestions on what to do with Friday/Saturday nights come April.

Richards a huge save to rob UC. Dutch pp continues.
Alec Richards with a ridiculous save. I am always amused that eLynah has information on out-of-town scores sooner than official college hockey sites. Thanks to whoever posted the radio feed, listening to this game is amazing.

Union penalty coming up to even things out for a while after only 23 seconds.

and onion continues to show why they have never won a playoff series in D1 -> interference call to end their pp after almost winning the game

43 saves and counting for Mayotte...
wow
this is insane
richards is standing on his head, at least it sounds that way ::nut::
Richards with 47 saves as of now, Mayotte with 43. Each team seems to be getting grade A chances, but the goaltenders are just stoning them cold.
Getting chippy, punches thrown... 5:22 left in 3OT.
2 players from both teams find their way to the box, matching minors all around. Sounds like one of the players is getting another on top of that.
EDIT: Union going on the PP. Crowd seems to be chanting "kick him out."
i am going to wake up in the AM and they will still be playing lol ::screwy::
Just lost Yale audio. :-(

big 5 minute pp...this is a huge chance.
A player from union gets called on a 5 min (boarding?) major. 21 sec in the 3 OT, Okay Yale, you are being handed this game. I think Yale is 0-9? thus far.

Of course, he's a Union alum... his wife, the Yale alum (former captain of the women's hockey team, in fact), hasn't offered me her opinion. :-)

And it's technically Sunday now ::nut::
But in the intermission, the feed has just shat the bed.

Was there ever a game this long at Lynah? I would've lost my voice about 2 OTs ago. What happened if anyone was there?
Also, can I request that people don't post that the feed isn't working over and over? I think most of the posts in the past hour say that.

Game on, halfway through the Yale pp.
34 sec left on Yale's pp. Mayotte had several big saves in the early going.
Union surviving the 5 min pp, and 30 secs to go in it.

And what do they do if they're still playing when game 3 is supposed to start? ::help::
I'd like to point out, however, that the Yale feed keeps dropping...
Union kills it.
So at this point do you think Yale's Coach Taylor is saying "Hey, that mini-game idea wasn't so bad after all". Or maybe "The first to 3 points was okay too".
Even strength.
Game 3 started about ten minutes ago.

This was the first game my oldest daughter attended. She was three weeks old at the time.
I have a fuzzy recollection of Shaun Hannah scoring the game-winning goal, but I haven't been able to find a box score or a recap. Greg?
On second thought, perhaps my recollection is of a a photo of Hannah celebrating the goal, jumping quite high in the air. The goal may have been scored by someone else.
Andy
From the 1996 POtW on the ECAC site:
Sophomore forward Brandy Fisher of New Hampshire was named the Bauer/ECAC player of the week for March 11 for her part in ending the longest game in NCAA men's and women's ice hockey history. When Fisher snapped a rebound high over the Providence College goalie's shoulder at 5:35 of the fifth overtime, the Wildcats won the ECAC championship. It was the school's fifth title. Fisher was selected as the tournament most valuable player.

3 cornell vs 8 clarkson
4. sucks vs 5 slu
IF brown wins we get
1 dartmouth v 12 brown

3 cornell vs 10 q
4. sucks vs 8 clarkson
crap, i dont want my ability to get tickets to depend on brown winning tomorrow! clarkson is a pain to get tix from...
go bruno!
Nevermind. The above post just answered my question.
If Brown beats SLU, we host Quinnipiac.
If SLU beats Brown, we host Clarkson.
Easy to listen to the Union feed now!
Also, Greg, did you see my question to you on the second page of this thread, about the 03/08/94 game? I know you'll just know the answer, without needing to look it up anywhere.
Thanks.
Andy
Union announcers talking about the Union players that got suspended. They said something like, "We don't know what they did, but it must have been stupid."
I've been to some rediculous NHL overtime games which had meant if the Devils score they win the cup and nothing could be more rediculous then being at Union and seeing that 5 overtime affair. That had to be the best game in the college hockey this year. Oh yeah the Devils beat the Rangers tonight and Dino's didn't have the game, because they have everyother package, but center ice. Don't go to Dino's

"Did you say, 'Syracuse?'"
Ernie Banks would have loved it.

My recollection is that Geoff Lopatka scored the winning goal in that play-in game.

Yep, that was the completion of Lopatka's hat trick.

Bring on Clarkson!!!
Remember, Clarkson swept us at home a few years ago in the second round. I'd start praying to the hockey gods!
It wasn't a sweep (but Cornell did lose the series). :`(

yeah that was not fun to be at :(
I don't know what you guys are talking about. that playoff series never happened... no way no how. it just never happened

There was no season that year. Only the Everblades Tournament. Anything else has been fabricated by RichS.
exactly. so nice to know there are others with the same thoughts as me

As a long lost Whalers fan, I have to say, if any team wants to take on brass bonanza as the banner of Connecticut hockey, I can't object to it being UConn.
Agreed.
I guess, in some respects, that I am too much of a traditionalist. I will always associate "Brass Bonanza" with The Whalers and many happy childhood memories. It just seems weird to have it played by another group, even in the context of a hockey game in the state of CT. But in the grand scheme (i.e. not in my warped world ;-) ) it isn't such a big deal and if it brings the UCONN hockey team a little bit of good hockey karma (they did win last night), so be it.
I think that is pretty cool. I have that song in my head often when I skate.
Even though I have been to the ECAC's often, I have only been to two home playoff games. For some reason I can only remember an 8-3 shellacking of Colgate. :-)
(Thanks for the posts on the Weder chant, by the way, and I am hoping to get tickets for this weekend)

Well, my initial reaction was disapproval too, but I've known they've been doing it for several years, and before long I kinda decided that it's kinda keeping the memory of the Whalers alive in a way, and that I can't object to it being UConn. Although it wouldn't hurt if they actually had a good team. But then again, maybe its more accurate this way ;)

Did you object when the Cornell band played Brass Bonanza at Gary Bettman when he came over to conduct the band in '03?

I have sort of followed the UCONN box scores for the past 4 years, but have not seen them play. They also do not have many of their games broadcast by WHUS, and I did not know they had been using Brass Bonanza, so yeah it did take me by surprise.
Given that UCONN will not give hockey scholarships, they probably will not amount to any more than a .500 team. I understand their rink is really nice (I remember visiting the campus when it was under construction), so they have decent facilities, but without scholarships it will be hard to attract player to a school where they will be ranked behind basketball football and soccer.
Sounds like there are enough "long lost Whaler fans" here to commisserate together :`( . Estero would be somewhat fitting. The Everblades have the Whaler colors (Navy blue and Green), and they are the farm team for "that franchise" in North Carolina.

I missed that. 2003 I was in Oregon and usually couldn't tune into the games until 5 pm PST.

Well, I have a friend that went to UConn and I'd gone to a few game there. Well, alright, as with most of us, I had many friends that went to UConn, but one that was a big hockey fan.

Well, the rink is alright by Atlantic Hockey standards maybe. Its not really nice. The nickname is the UConn Ice Garage (real name: Ice Arena). Its basically a big aluminum box with a few rows of bleachers on each side. Its definitely an upgrade from the semi-outdoor rink they had during D-2 (or was it D-3?) days. There's nothing wrong with it - in fact is has a nice little lobby area - but I'd take about anything in the ECAC over it.
As far as scholarships, I think they will eventually. But they have too much tied up in the new D-IA football program right now. That and Title IX issues. But this is Ct, which is definitely a hockey state (not like Minn or Mass, but the next step down). And this is UConn, which is half a good state university and half a sports team. I have a hard time seeing them not going after improving the hockey team once their football project has gotten it to the level they'd like it.

I missed that too! Damn, where was I?? Well, I guess I was in section E, and if I heard it, didn't know why. Good going band!
