Thought I'd start the thread. Who should we be cheering for tonight. Clarkson became a tuc which hurt us so we would want them to lose. What about the other games, would any team winning help us out?

Ill post scores once games start.
We do want Clarkson to lose because of that, you're right.  Their RPI is very close to .500 and I have to imagine it could drop below the magic number with a loss or two.

RPI is at .4864, which would seem to be low enough, but you never know.  Union is at .4826.

Niagara sits at .4919, but I'm not sure they (and their two losses to Cornell) will be able to make it to TUC status without winning the CHA tournament.  Still, root for them because it helps Cornell's RPI.

Cornell loses the comparison with North Dakota based on a narrow margin in RPI.  Root against them.  (The same thing is true about Denver, but they don't play tonight.)

Cornell loses the comparison with Nebraska-Omaha based on a narrow margin in record against TUCs, but UNO plays Bowling Green (not close to being a TUC tonight).  Root against UNO in the later rounds of the CCHA tournament.

With bonuses added, Harvard is ahead of Cornell in the PWR (despite their enormous suckitude).  Root against them (as if I needed to tell any of you that).

According to the Clarkson feed, Yale and Union are tied at 1.

In a game with no obvious effect on our PWR, UCONN and Sacred Heart are tied at 1 midway through the 1st. There are some local and Cornell ties. It is Senior night at UCONN and the last home game for UCONN co-captain and Ithaca High graduate Chris Uber. Sacred Heart is coached by Shaun Hannah, Cornell 1994. And because it is SENIOR NIGHT, the game is being broadcast on WHUS (internet streaming!). Apparently the UCONN band is feeling good after the Men's basketball team won at least a share of the Big East Title, that they are at the hockey game too.

Title: Re: Out of Town Scores: Game 2
Post by: Rita on March 04, 2006, 07:38:18 PM
After 1 period, UCONN and Sacred Heart now tied 2-2.

Sacred Heart is currently at the top of the AHA, so I guess if they do win the AHA tourney and get the auto-bid, they could *possibly* play a role in Cornell getting sent to ND, right?  ::nut::

Feeling pessimistic in Indiana ;-)

stolen from the post by min in the thread from last night:

"Here's another way of determining Cornell's next opponent:

Exactly 0 upsets (all higher seeds advance)
Union

Exactly 1 upset
Union (if Princeton or QU wins)
RPI (if Yale or Brown wins)

Exactly 2 upsets
Union (if both Princeton and QU win)
RPI (if Princeton and Yale OR Princeton and Brown win)
Clarkson (if QU and Brown OR QU and Yale OR Yale and Brown win)

Exactly 3 upsets
QU (if QU, Brown and Yale win)
Princeton (all other three combinations)

Exactly 4 upsets (no higher seeds advance)
QU

In sum, in terms of percentage of becoming Cornell's next rival (if I'm not mistaken):
Union (25%)
RPI (25%)
Clarkson (18.75%)
Princeton (18.75%)
Quinnipiac (12.5%)"

In the 2nd period, UCONN goes up 3-2 on a ppg by Chris Uber.

[soapbox on]
The UCONN band is playing "Brass Bonanza" when the huskies come on the ice and after goals. That tune should *only* be played in reference to the deceased New England/Hartford Whalers (no, I do not recognize the Carolina Hurricanes as the "former Hartford Whalers").
According to the announcers, the UCONN band only shows up at hockey games once a year, so I guess they really don't have much "hockey music".
[Soapbox off]

Oh dear. I must have missed that because I was sooo incensed that the UCONN band was playing "Sweet Caroline" in last week's Villanova game. I have only been tuning in to  UCONN hoops the past few weeks. Unfortunately, it isn't something I have time to track regularly.

Clarkson is who we want in my opinion.  This is the playoffs and the more battles the better.  I would rather see a team that they are going to have to be at the top of their game for the entire weekend.  Cornell has played their best hockey this season playing against tough teams and rarely did they decisively beat the lower tier teams.

Brown wins 3-2 and lives to fight another day.

Quinnipiac wins 4-2 and sweeps their first ECAC playoff series.

Clarkson ends Princeton's season 5-0.

Yale and Union tied at 2 with a few minutes left in the 3rd.

Title: Re: Out of Town Scores: Game 2
Post by: Rita on March 04, 2006, 09:22:37 PM
UCONN defeats Sacred Heart 4-3. I'm glad Chris Uber got a goal and had a good game tonight.  UCONN is waiting for results from other games and will be seeded somewhere between 6-8 in the AHA playoffs. Sacred Heart has a chance of finishing first, depending on what Holy Cross does. IIRC, the AHA quarterfinals are just one game and not the best of 3.

Also, I was surprised to hear that the UCONN men's hockey team does NOT give out athletic scholarships. The women's hockey team does, but that is probably to be Title IX compliant. UCONN recently brought their football team to D-1A so I wonder what other men's athletic teams also had scholarships reduced or eliminated.

What's the format these days? Unlimited number of 20-minute sudden death overtimes? I'm guessing since they're playing at least one 20 minute OT, it's not a "first team to three points" kind of series, right?

think i did this correctly

1 Dartmouth
2 Colgate
3 cornell
4 SUCKS
5 slu(t)
6. onion
7. rip
8. clarkson
9. PU
10. q
11. yale
12. brown

5 slu vs 12 brown
6. onion v 11 yale
7 rip v 10 Q
8 clarkson 9 PU

ok so right now we have

1 dartmouth
2 gate
3 cornell
4 sucks

5. slu or 12 brown
6 onion or 11 yale

8 clarkson
10 Q

see what happens:
assuming SLU wins tomorrow AND
IF onion wins tonight and tomorrow
1 dartmouth v  10 q
2 gate vs 8 clarkson
3 cornell vs 6 onion
4. sucks vs 5 slu
IF onion lose tonight or tomorrow (yale wins) we get
1 dartmouth v 11 yale
2 gate vs 10 q
3 cornell vs 8 clarkson
4. sucks vs 5 slu

assuming brown wins tomorrow AND
IF onion wins tonight and tomorrow we get
1 dartmouth v 12 brown
2 gate vs 10 q
3 cornell vs 8 clarkson
4. sucks vs 6 onion
IF yale wins one more game we get
1 dartmouth v 12 brown
2 gate vs 11 yale
3 cornell vs 10 q
4. sucks vs 8 clarkson

Richards with 47 saves as of now, Mayotte with 43.  Each team seems to be getting grade A chances, but the goaltenders are just stoning them cold.

Getting chippy, punches thrown... 5:22 left in 3OT.

2 players from both teams find their way to the box, matching minors all around.  Sounds like one of the players is getting another on top of that.

EDIT: Union going on the PP.  Crowd seems to be chanting "kick him out."
I missed your last post because my feed cut off.  PM me for details.  The longest game at Lynah IIRC is the Prelim win vs Princeton on 3/08/94.  Just 1 ot.
This was the first game my oldest daughter attended. She was three weeks old at the time.

I have a fuzzy recollection of Shaun Hannah scoring the game-winning goal, but I haven't been able to find a box score or a recap. Greg?

On second thought, perhaps my recollection is of a a photo of Hannah celebrating the goal, jumping quite high in the air. The goal may have been scored by someone else.

From the 1996 POtW on the ECAC site:

Sophomore forward Brandy Fisher of New Hampshire was named the Bauer/ECAC player of the week for March 11 for her part in ending the longest game in NCAA men's and women's ice hockey history. When Fisher snapped a rebound high over the Providence College goalie's shoulder at 5:35 of the fifth overtime, the Wildcats won the ECAC championship. It was the school's fifth title. Fisher was selected as the tournament most valuable player.

think i did this correctly

1 Dartmouth
2 Colgate
3 cornell
4 SUCKS
5 slu(t)
6. onion
7. rip
8. clarkson
9. PU
10. q
11. yale
12. brown

5 slu vs 12 brown
6. onion v 11 yale
7 rip v 10 Q
8 clarkson 9 PU

ok so right now we have

1 dartmouth
2 gate
3 cornell
4 sucks

5. slu or 12 brown

8 clarkson
10 Q
11 yale

see what happens:
if SLU wins we get:

1 dartmouth v 11 yale
2 gate vs 10 q
3 cornell vs 8 clarkson
4. sucks vs 5 slu

IF brown wins we get
1 dartmouth v 12 brown
2 gate vs 11 yale
3 cornell vs 10 q
4. sucks vs 8 clarkson

crap, i dont want my ability to get tickets to depend on brown winning tomorrow! clarkson is a pain to get tix from...
go bruno!

I've been to some rediculous NHL overtime games which had meant if the Devils score they win the cup and nothing could be more rediculous then being at Union and seeing that 5 overtime affair. That had to be the best game in the college hockey this year. Oh yeah the Devils beat the Rangers tonight and Dino's didn't have the game, because they have everyother package, but center ice. Don't go to Dino's

I guess, in some respects, that I am too much of a traditionalist. I will always associate "Brass Bonanza" with The Whalers and many happy childhood memories. It just seems weird to have it played by another group, even in the context of a hockey game in the state of CT. But in the grand scheme (i.e. not in my warped world ;-) )  it isn't such a big deal and if it brings the UCONN hockey team a little bit of good hockey karma (they did win last night), so be it.

Well, my initial reaction was disapproval too, but I've known they've been doing it for several years, and before long I kinda decided that it's kinda keeping the memory of the Whalers alive in a way, and that I can't object to it being UConn. Although it wouldn't hurt if they actually had a good team. But then again, maybe its more accurate this way ;)

I have sort of followed the UCONN box scores for the past 4 years, but have not seen them play. They also do not have many of their games broadcast by WHUS, and I did not know they had been using Brass Bonanza, so yeah it did take me by surprise.

Given that UCONN will not give hockey scholarships, they probably will not amount to any more than a .500 team. I understand their rink is really nice (I remember visiting the campus when it was under construction), so they have decent facilities, but without scholarships it will be hard to attract player to a school where they will be ranked behind basketball football and soccer.

Sounds like there are enough "long lost Whaler fans" here to commisserate together :`( . Estero would be somewhat fitting. The Everblades have the Whaler colors (Navy blue and Green), and they are the farm team for "that franchise" in North Carolina.

Well, I have a friend that went to UConn and I'd gone to a few game there. Well, alright, as with most of us, I had many friends that went to UConn, but one that was a big hockey fan.

Well, the rink is alright by Atlantic Hockey standards maybe. Its not really nice. The nickname is the UConn Ice Garage (real name: Ice Arena). Its basically a big aluminum box with a few rows of bleachers on each side. Its definitely an upgrade from the semi-outdoor rink they had during D-2 (or was it D-3?) days. There's nothing wrong with it - in fact is has a nice little lobby area - but I'd take about anything in the ECAC over it.

As far as scholarships, I think they will eventually. But they have too much tied up in the new D-IA football program right now. That and Title IX issues. But this is Ct, which is definitely a hockey state (not like Minn or Mass, but the next step down). And this is UConn, which is half a good state university and half a sports team. I have a hard time seeing them not going after improving the hockey team once their football project has gotten it to the level they'd like it.
