Title: Anyone watching CAN/SWE women's hockey game now? (OT, but deals w/ IVY league hockey)
Post by: jaybert on February 20, 2006, 03:27:53 PM
I didnt catch the beginning of the convesation, but I assume it has to deal with a young recruit from either Canada or Sweden.  When asked about which school she would end up choosing, her response was something like "I dont know...but it wont be an IVY league, thats too hard/much work)".

EDIT:  theres no real reason to this post...maybe just another excuse for us why we're not getting the prized recruits.  not that we dont have enough of those already....scholarships, facilities, number of games played, etc :P

EDIT2: woah..they just said that they had Harvard fans at the women's hockey game since there are 4 of them on the team.  Who woulda thought hey would have fans willing to travel to freakin Italy when they wont even travel 1/2 mile to Bright.

I haven't watched a women's game since the last Olympics.  There's been a noticeable improvement.  Passing is crisper, play set-up is more sophisticated (probably as a consequence).  Canada is miles more skilled than Sweden, but even the Swedes are playing better now than either Canada or the US did four years ago.  The game's come a long way -- it's equivalent in skill and style to a fair ECAC men's game at this point.  A couple more Olympics and they will be amazing.

Trotsky I would not necessarily compare the womens team to the ECAC men teams.  The US Team this fall I heard lost to one of the elite MN HS hockey teams.  I will agree that the game as improved tremendously.

Yeah, but they still get called for penalties on beautiful checks.  *sigh*

The US Women's Olympic team also played boys' teams at eastern preps, Choate, Salisbury, and Westminister. Article from Choate: http://www.choate.edu/news/detail.asp?pageaction=ViewSinglePublic&LinkID=1043&ModuleID=23 Pictures: http://www.choate.edu/athletics/photos.asp

According to USHR, Westminster beat the Olympians 5-2 and Salisbury beat the Olympians 4-2. The Choate result is not mentioned, and the link above that I posted is vague saying that both teams were happy with the result.

I assume they played with womens' rules?  I'm sure many of the players on the Olympic squad have played hockey with checking at some level, but I doubt they want a physical game as a warm-up for the tournament.

They lost to Choate as well.  I saw a little on the tube. The team looks good but it is quite a stretch to say that that they are at an ECAC level.  I say this since they were defeated by highschool hockey teams, at least one with a losing record, and by boarding schools that don't seem to get many players into the ECAC.

Ill concede the tape to tape passing it sweet and the skating looks solid.  Still right now women's olympic ice hockey is a LONG way from men's college hockey, even  if that gap is narrowing.
