Title: THIS HAS GOT TO BE ADDED TO OUR STAPLE CHEERS
Post by: sam on February 04, 2006, 02:56:48 PM
Shouldve done this for Colgate, must for future games, and any other schools who think that they're replacing Harvard as our rivals merely because they're currently ranked high.

NOT OUR RIVALS  clap-clap, clap-clap-clap
*repeat*

If you've ever seen any Maryland-Duke baskebtall games, you'd know that this cheer, like none other, puctures the opposing team's egos and morale and is, essentially, true.

All ECAC teams think that we're their rival, its time we gave them a reality check.

Harvard could do it to us.  If they had fans.

I really like it for Colgate.  Other than that...  I mean, if you use it for Clarkson, it doesn't really make sense given the long history there.

I think the cheer would be really funny but from the webcast (which--I'm going to bitch again--I had to watch this morning), Colgate sure seemed like a rival.

I don't have the history a lot of people on this board do, but in my short couple years here, I've come to look forward to Colgate games as some of my favorites.  Their team is good and seems to play a pretty clean, hard game.  Throw in that they're travel partners and have been good over the last couple years, and they've got this newbie/facetimer's vote for a fun rivalry.  I think if Harvard weren't Hahvahd, I might even list Colgate as the higher of the two.

Plus, I enjoy the irony of "Go CU!" when we play 'Gate ;)

But again, this is coming from someone who's so new to the game that he had to ask about Hey Bâby.

Yes it's a big game now, but only recently.  But the whole point of the cheer is that they consider us their biggest rival, but they're not ours, heck, probly now even in the top 4 or 5 historically.

Now that's going too far. B-]

Sure, they are a regional rival.  But Colgate isn't in the Ivy league (even though they sometimes think they are) and thus we don't play them in all of our other sports.

Even in a year like '92-'93 you can get psyched up for the Harvard game.

I would attribute it more to the first game of a home-and-home against the first-place team in the league that we're chasing for that position.

We play other sports?
Wait, let me rephrase that:  Other sports exist?  ;-)

I see your point, but within the context of hockey at least, I dunno, Ivy League doesn't really affect me that much.  Given a choice between Colgate or Princeton, I'd take 'Gate over 'Ton any day.

I like it, but I agree with jmh -- be careful when it's used. Colgate would be a good school to use it against.

Good example.  Go to a lacrosse game.  You'll hate Princeton pretty quickly. ;-)  But yeah, I dislike Colgate more just because I've had more interaction with obnoxious fans from Colgate.

Yeah, but the point is that, Ivy or not, Harvard has had a great program over the course of fifty years.  We've battled harvard back and forth since the early sixties.  Colgate is good now and has been at times in the past, but they're not Harvard.  Rivalries are built over the course of time.

And the Ivy factor helps too.

Colgate is a much more significant hockey rival than Princeton and Brown, over all time.  Yale has had its moment.  Dartmouth has had its moments.  But currently, 'Gate exceeds both of those as well.  So the Ivy Factor is not that strong in hockey.

For instance, it certainly didn't stop Boston University from being among Cornell's biggest hockey rivals for nearly twenty years.

The irony is that, as indicated above, Harvard could do this cheer to Cornell. With respect to perceived rivalries, you could say that Colgate is to Cornell, what Cornell is to Harvard.  Cornell does not view Colgate as its most significant rival, just like Harvard does not put Cornell in this category.  This was clearly reflected in some Harvard player radio interviews when they last visited Lynah -- as they were commenting with some puzzlemnent & raised eyebrows on the particularly frenzied Red fans (and fish!).

Harvard's Beanpot opponents would appear to take the honored "rival" spot.  So we need to be careful dissing other's perceived rivals.

And yet, there is little question that in the last few years, Bright has contained more Hahvahd students - and more vocal Hahvahd students - for the Cornell game than for most others.  It seems to me they're gradually putting the lie to their own earlier-expressed opinions of the rivalry.

As for the puzzlement of Hahvahd players, well - unless they were freshmen and therefore witnessing the fish & frenzy for the first time, they had no reason to be puzzled or surprised.  (Plus, what did you think they would do on a radio broadcast - say they were intimidated or impressed?)

The Abbott that did the intermission interview during the @Colgate game said exactly that :)

Heh.  No, that would be Yale.  Evidence: The Game, where the schools bus half their student population to the game.  It doesn't matter which sport, Harvard and Yale are each other's primary rivals.  Princeton creeps into this a bit with HYP stuff, but they're a bit of a third wheel.  In men's hockey specifically, though, Harvard hockey fans seem to realize that we matter.
