Title: STEVE SILVERTHORNE!
Post by: LaJollaRed on January 06, 2006, 05:36:07 PM
Remember the pants-less goalie for Colgate? Third best goalie in the ECACHL last season, Steve Silverthorne will be netminding for the Idaho Steelheads tonight against the San Diego Gulls in a minor league hockey game. I'm going to be there in my Lynah Faithful shirt...Does anyone have any suggestions for how to best get into Steve's head with memories of Lynah?

Keep in mind, I'll probably be the only person in the entire rink watching the game. Minor league hockey in San Diego tends to be more about the cheerleaders (yes, cheerleaders) than the game.

Thanks for pointing that out LaJolla.

I'm arriving in SD tomorrow night -- too late for this game -- but I looked at the week's schedule and noticed the Alaska Aces are in town on Sunday evening.  And who's minding the net for Alaska?  Matt Underhill. I'll have to check it out if I'm free.

Although, it seems he's splitting time about 60/40 with the other goalie, so I'd would want to know beforehand who is in net Sunday night.

I'd suggest some friendly Cornell/Lynah cheers early and then root for him as an ECAC alum.  Unless, of course, you're a die-hard Gulls fan and want to see him give up a dozen goals.

A little "Colgate-Sucks" at an early whistle might be a nice reminder and something which he would certainly understand (even though most in the arena would think you're nuts).

Make fun of the pink socks he always wore...  but give the guy some support for the sake of the ECACHL

Forget about Silverthorn; cheer for Greg Hornby, the Steelheads' leader in penalty minutes! He's also tied for third in the ECHL with 13 major penalties this season.

Amen.  I'm all for supporting fellow ECAC alums in the professional ranks.  But when they're playing against Cornellians all bets are off.

Wow. I didnt even see that. Keep in mind that ECHL hockey is a small rung above NWA wraslin' when it comes to penalties. I might bring along a poncho a'la Gallager shows to avoid splashing blood.

DAMNIT, I love hockey.:-D

Title: Final thoughts

San Diego came from behind to beat Silverthorn and the Steelheads 2-1. Hornby did not have a great game, but it was interesting yelling LET'S GO RED and having the San Diego fans cheer with me...The Gulls' jerseys are orange...Which is sort of red.

I found myself rooting for Silverthorn, though. The beer-soaked San Diegan fans didn't know what a sieve is, and it was too difficult to explain to persons who have never cooked a non-fried meal in their lives. Silverthorn was wearing his Colgate helmet and mask, and after a few rounds of Colagte Sucks, Let's Go Red, with my friend from Berkeley joining in, I gave it a rest and hoped he'd stick the shut out...He caved like the roof of a German ice rink.

Too soon?

Also, he STILL doesn't wear anything under his leg pads.

LGR!!!!!
