Title: Cheverie News
Post by: ithacat on November 08, 2005, 06:36:33 AM
According to USHR, Marc Cheverie has said "I do" to Denver. For the second year in a row Cornell plays bridesmaid to a big-time goalie recruit.

This is a pretty crappy way to start the day.

Not great news, but still at least we were in the running.  It wasn't long ago that top recruits wouldn't have really considered us.  Progress is slow, but it's still progress.
For now we need to straighten out our defense, and get into our usual flow.  I can't wait to play Sucks University and Really Sucks College this weekend!

Mannino had good numbers last year, but Cheverie probably feels he will get more time as a frosh at DU.  There are also a million possibilities, from skiing to a girlfriend, that he might have picked Denver for reasons having zip to do with hockey.

Don't panic.  McKee is firmly ensconced in net through April 2007; we probably won't see his heir commit until Fall of '06.

I would have loved to see Cheverie choose Cornell, though personally I think (if true) losing Moran is a bigger deal. Assuming McKee returns for his final year getting a goalie lined up in next year's class becomes a necessity; if, however, McKee were to pull a Hynes...

I wonder how hard the staff is now working on Bachman and whether they could get him to spend a year in one of the junior leagues.

Sounds like famous last words, no? :-P

Who is Bachman and where does he play?

There may be some unease about how many years McKee sticks around for because of the piece by SI golf writer Rick Lipsey '89 in the just-mailed Cornell Alumni Magazine that sounded as if McKee was leaving open his options about whether to play senior year. The gist of the article (Win, Schafer, Win) was that this is the year to pursue the national championship, that McKee is certainly here this year, and Schafer still wants to coach in the pros but that's a future thing.

If I was a great goalie prospect, I don't think I'd want to spend two of my four years backing up Mckee, and some don't even want to spend one.

i'd only be 1 right?  Since any player now would start in the 06 season at the earliest...which is mckee's senior year.

Richard Bachman, he's a senior at Cushing Academy. Heisenberg's recruiting site incorrectly identifies him as Rich Bachmeier. ithacat reported in the recruits thread that he's considering Cornell, BC, CC, and Harvard.

Troy Davenport left right after he got here because he didn't want to spend 3 years as a possible backup; Dan DiLeo gets to spend 2 years backing up Mckee, doesn't know if he's Mckee's successor, and there possibly were others who didn't come this fall with the class of '09 because of the likely two years riding the bench; and someone who arrives next year gets to back up McKee for one year.

If David LeNeveu had not pulled his own Shane Hynes, McKee would now be starting his sophomore year and this discussion wouldn't be taking place for another year. OTOH McKee turns 23 next June and 24 in June 2007, so who knows if he would have stuck around through 2007-2008 if he had been a sophomore this year.

This is a bummer, I really thought he was the heir apparent. Played on the Dartmouth Subways w/ Blake Gallagher, played on the ND Hounds w/ Jared Seminoff, played on the Clippers w/ Colin Greening, Bestwick pitches Cornell..

Oh well, Schafer & co have clearly shown that they can pick up less-heralded goalies and mold them into superstars :)

Now that the Nov. early signing period has started, I hope that we'll hear about some defensemen, both those who are on our radar and those who aren't.

Another interesting note is that the leading scorer of the BCHL, Brandon Wong, has just committed to Quinnipiac.

McKee isn't drafted, therefore there's no team holding his rights whose clock is ticking and who is throwing money at him.  Of course it could happen, but especially with goalies, what's the percentage on signing a guy as an FA and then sticking him in the AHL, rather than just letting him finish up his degree and get the extra year of seasoning gratis?

What are the rules on NHL teams talking to undrafted free agent college athletes?  Can anybody just pay him a visit, or are there "tampering" regs?

He's committed for '07 so he probably would have gotten more time here than at Denver or even North Dakota.  But, the rest of what you said definitely holds.  Tack on scholarship money, academic demands to the list of possibilities.

Looks like Chay Genoway's headed to North Dakota..not clear whether it's for next year or '07

I wonder if these things come in threes..I assume we'll hear that Chad Morin's headed to Harvard later today :P
