For the curious...

i like those designs. someone should tell them to have a lower ceiling -> it would likely be louder.
I'm waiting for a translucent ceiling. Play by moonlight.
Very nice looking building, very invocative of Thom Mayne's work. They've made a good choice for architects: HOK is a widely respected sport venue architecture firm. Good luck to UM-D in the fight to get their new facility(and hopefully steal some future talent from the piss-colored flea-bitten rodents to the south).
6630 seats, $66 million (like $9,900 a seat), and it's still not close to campus. The not-Golden Gophers do have a legit question about why one of the two big state universities gets a spanking new rink but not them. Wonder if they're going Olympic or NHL size?
The DECC is 190'x85' ... my guess would be a standard NA 200'x85'
Looks like Dartmouth's rink.

Having a rink on campus is not an option for UMD, as the rink would continue to be used as a convention center/entertainment complex, thus they are building it by downtown rather than up the hill to the north of downtown...as for Mariucci, that was built in a very different political climate from the current one. For example, the Twins and Vikings stadium plans rely heavily on private and county tax increases (no state money) and they cannot even be approved (of course, we also had a government shutdown when the legislature failed to agree on a freakin budget). Also, if recruiting was the issue, it should be said that it is embarassing that the Gopher football team does not have an on-campus stadium (Unlike all the other Big Ten/most DI schools). Welcome to the life of an underfunded state school system.
[q]Welcome to the life of an underfunded state school system.[/q]I'm not going to get into a discussion about whether state universities are typically underfunded for their core responsibilities (e.g. academics). But this comment seems pretty out of place when talking about replacing existing athletic facilities.
Why not pay attention to things that really matter? :-D
