That's a tall order. Here's a super-quick rundown.

Massachusetts vs. Johns Hopkins
Angles: Clash of styles; rematch of surprisingly tight 2002 quarterfinal (after which Hopkins' fans gave the Minutemen an unusual post-game ovation); and, of course, that old good vs. evil thing.
Favorite: Hopkins, heavily.
Cool players to watch: Jeff Zywicki of UMass (dynamic Canadian attackman), Kyle Harrison of Johns Hopkins (explosive midfielder who is likely to win the Teewaraton).

Virginia vs. Navy
Angles: Likely to be best match-up in quarters; despite blowout of Albany, some think the Cavs haven't fully recovered 17-2 pasting by Duke last month; Navy's awesome midfielder Looney just got injured and is out for the season.
Favorite: Pick 'em.
Cool players to watch: John Christmas of Virginia (lightning-fast attackman); Mitch Hendler of Navy (may be best close defender in the nation).

Cornell vs. Duke
Angles: David vs. Goliath; will Cornell play conservatively on offense or will they let their big guns shoot away?
Favorite: Duke, heavily.
Cool players to watch: Joe Boulukos of Cornell (bull with a cannon -- but can he play within himself?); Matt Danowski (only a soph, but best and most versatile attackman in the nation).

Georgetown vs. Maryland
Angles: Maryland is super hot; rematch of a stunning early-season blowout win by the Hoyas; will the Hoyas' long pole god Brodie Merrill get put on of the Terps' dangerous middies or attackman Walters?
Favorite: Maryland, marginally.
Cool players to watch: Brodie Merrill of Georgetown (rare Canadian LSM/D -- the most exciting long stick in years); Joe Walters of Maryland (attackman with an incredibly hard and accurate shot -- yow!).

An additional note of local interest, Ithaca High School graduates Casey Stevenson (Cornell), Craig Stevenson (Georgetown) and Drew Evans (Maryland), will all be suiting up in Princeton on Sunday.  An IHS grad, or, hopefully, two, will be in the final four.

Read this article:

This guy should help somewhat (6'2, 225) and All LI Running Back.

Holy Smokes, what a performance (although I thought he was a WR/KR in football). Hewlett's rise on the LI scene is unbelievable. The program didn't even exist a decade ago. I can't wait to see what he brings to the hill.

Sounds like a bigger (yikes!) version of Joe Boulukos.  Hope he shows the same stick skills.

So I'm in Bear, DE on Sunday for a obligation with the in-laws. But I'd rather be in Princeton watching our beloved Big Red.

So here's the question: Can anyone give me a lift?

Lax <--> Cornell hockey connection: on the JHU-UMass game carried on Comcast Sportsnet in MD, one of the commentators is listed as Brian "Heyward."  All well and good, except after hearing a few of his remarks about hockey goaltending it became obvious this is none other than our own Brian Hayward.  I don't think he'll be doing the Princeton games tomorrow -- more's the pity.

In today's games:

Hopkins 19, UMass 9
Virginia 10, Navy 8

Being 6'2", 225, and athletic, he better dominate Class B anything in New York.  I'm sure he's a great player--I mean, we did recruit and sign him ;-)--but you frequently see athletes individually dominate Class B.

Just a little perspective on the NY high school scene: I'm guessing Hewlett graduates classes of about 200; minuscule compared to some of the powerhouse Class AA schools around Syracuse, Albany, and on LI that graduate classes of 750+.

Maryland-Georgetown in a close, defensive struggle (5-3 MD late in the 3rd).  The place looks empty.

Game on! Sloppy opening 30 seconds or both sides, Duke has the first settled possession

Early man up for Duke

But the shot is missed and possession to Cornell

Camera work on Comcast is pretty good.  The angle behind the net is great for someone like me who doesn't really know the game.

Duke 1-0 about 8 mins in.
Title: Re: [OT] NCAA Lax QF: Cornell v Duke
Post by: Trotsky on May 22, 2005, 03:27:03 PM
The Duke goal was behind the baclk and over the shoulder no-look, coming after a nice save in front that came loose.  Cornell's spending a lot of time setting up and hasn't had many shots at all, but they seem to be controlling the clock.  They still can't win a faceoff, though.
Title: Re: [OT] NCAA Lax QF: Cornell v Duke

Duke player gets free from and sneaks around from behind to make it 2-0.

Uh oh.  Redd stoned on a nice save and then Duke comes down for Danowski's 2nd goal, 3-0.

Cornell has been winning some faceoffs (as they do again), but they can't seem to get any quality opportunities on the offensive end. They seem to mainly be standing around.

Duke missed wide right at the end of the first quarter; 3-0.

Beautiful little flip pass to Nee who tosses it home... 4-2... now we're flying ;)

(3 goals in the first quarter, 3 goals in the first minute of the second quarter - Duke gets possession)

I've been trying to watch from the CN8 website http://www.cn8.tv/channel/channelhome.asp?lChannelID=606 but I get the error "No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it"....not too nice on their part... :-P   Thanks for the updates!

Duke hits the crossbar on a point blank shot, but I think they were in the crease anyway.  Still 4-3, late 2nd.

Wow, they just showed one of the bleachers, and now at least it looks packed (I see many red 21s).  2:12 remaining in first half, 4-3 Duke.

Neejust barely hits the outside of the net.  Still 4-3, but the Red look outstanding right now.

8-3 Duke on the transition, Danowski's 5th, Duke is much smoother and more aggressive, timeout Cornell

I'm sorry, I should have made that more clear in my post, I guess...  :-P ;-)  I was simply pointing out that his insane stats can be misleading coming from Class B.

From the radio...it seems like Duke's getting the ball, going to the goal, and scoring.  Cornell seems to be taking its time, adjusting the set of players on the field, going upfield, and then taking a lot of time to shoot.  Duke seems to be scoring almost at will, and their defense is blocking/deflecting a lot of shots.
Title: Re: [OT] NCAA Lax QF: Cornell v Duke
Post by: DeltaOne81 on May 22, 2005, 04:38:25 PM
Cornell seems unable to get any open looks, Duke's just shutting down all the lanes and if a Cornell player dares to try to run in they're all over him, leaving only to low percentage shots

and another behind the back for Duke, 10-3

after two failed clears in a row by Cornell, 11-3 Duke on a nifty dodge to be open in front

end of the quarter

Duke and JHU are hugely impressive. And at least they made that respectable at the end. Not sure what happened in the third quarter there, but Duke was looking like they could drill anyone in the nation with that D and ability to force turnovers.

Valiant comeback when a complete blowout seemed likely.  Reminded me of the Army game where a big mid-game run killed us, although we had a shot at the end.

Magnificent carreers for our Senior class; too bad they could not have made it to at least one final four out of the three chances.

I guess I would have to pull for Duke to win it all now -- add a little more validity to the season.

It will be interesting to see how we pan out next year; most people will pick us to be down considering how much talent we are losing.
