Title: CU-Minnesota Game Thread
Post by: scoop85 on March 27, 2005, 03:47:55 PM
I guess I will start this ...

Minnesota has the clear early edge, getting off seven shots before we have one from Krantz.

It's sad that we have to play before such a partisan crowd in an NCAA Regional final.  The place is awfully loud!

UM PP again...Cook- Delay of Game for pushing the goal off its post
Title: Re: CU-Minnesota Game Thread
Post by: scoop85 on March 27, 2005, 04:03:15 PM
Minnesota hits the post on the PP, then McKee covers.

The Minnesota color guy (I believe it's former North Stars coach Glen Somner) is a pathetic homer.

Cook knocks net off and gets called for delay of game.
Title: Re: CU-Minnesota Game Thread
Post by: scoop85 on March 27, 2005, 04:06:34 PM
We are still hanging in, Minnesota sounds incredibly fast.

These announcers are piss-poor.  The color guy keeps shouting over the play-by-play man and you can't hear what the heck is going half the time.

Another close call for Minny.
Title: Re: CU-Minnesota Game Thread

Another UM PP...Scott going in the box.   Late in the first
Title: Re: CU-Minnesota Game Thread

Another minny PP.  It sounds like we simply can't handle their speed right now.  That will have to change if we want to move on.

What's with the game clock on the TV screen?   I heard the horn sound in the background (signaling the end of the period) and the clock on the screen still showed 2-3 seconds left.   Hummmmm!

The Minnie radio announcers gotta be tired from the verbal handjobs they're giving eachother.
Title: Re: CU-Minnesota Game Thread
Post by: billhoward on March 27, 2005, 04:17:39 PM
It was like that yesterday: game clock seemingly out of sync. It's as if part of the game is delayed by a satellite up/downlink or by a standard/HD conversion but not the graphics. Maybe it's part of college hockey's teething pains on TV.
Title: Re: CU-Minnesota Game Thread
Post by: billhoward on March 27, 2005, 04:21:22 PM
Cornell has made comebacks before. We'll see.

Before the game there was a lot of bravado: big sheets of ice, other team playing in its own rink, we'll do whatever it takes to move along. Could still happen. After the first period only, this seems to be a pretty good advantage for the Gophers.
Title: Re: CU-Minnesota Game Thread
Post by: redice on March 27, 2005, 04:22:13 PM
Hopefully having all of those shots (14) and a wide territorial advantage will frustrate UM and, at the same time, wake up The Red
Title: Re: CU-Minnesota Game Thread
Post by: trumpetsailor on March 27, 2005, 04:25:19 PM
Note, however, that they just survived 14 shots, a number of them quality, in a big scary rink. It's still anyone's game... It's just two periods, instead of three.

That said, I'd love for us to have a shot at them in Lynah, on small ice, with the place full of Red, minus section O, of course.

LET'S GO RED!

Similar opening period in the UNH/Denver game.  SOG were 18-2 in favor of Denver and the score was 1-1 at the end of the first.  UNH played a much better game in the second period.  Hopefully the BIG RED can match their effort.

LET'S GO RED!!!

We had much better momentum this period just not generating any shots. Scotts chance was the best chance in the game so far.

Post by: redice on March 27, 2005, 04:45:03 PM
From WHCU:  A story was just told that makes clear that UofM did not always use 100% Minnesota players.   According to Glen Sonmor, in the 60's there was big effort to recruit a big kid from Toronto who was a great hockey goalie and also played basketball & baseball and was a great student.   The problem was that Ned Harkness had that Big Kid locked up to attend CU.   I don't think anyone here needs to be told the kid's name.

End of 2, 1-1.  We have 1:40 of powerplay to start the 3rd.

We're weathering a serious storm.  20 minutes of regulation left and we are still alive.

We sounded a bit stronger in the 2nd, so hope we can ratchet it up in the 3rd and steal this one.

Title: Re: CU-Minnesota Game Thread
Post by: TCHL8842 on March 27, 2005, 05:03:56 PM
scoop the second period was really pretty much even.  Yes, Minnesota had more shots and lots more chances because of their were on the PP a lot, but Cornell held it in there zone quite a bit but could not generate any shots from it.
Title: Re: CU-Minnesota Game Thread
Post by: scoop85 on March 27, 2005, 05:10:22 PM
For those watching, how (if at all) is our game being affected by the larger ice surface vs. the effect of Minnesota's speed and passing skills?
Title: Re: CU-Minnesota Game Thread
Post by: TCHL8842 on March 27, 2005, 05:14:07 PM
Minnesota really tries to spread the ice and our a lot better passes than Cornell.  Then again I see Minnesota making lots of cross ice passes in the first period so I would think that would be an affect of the larger ice surface.  Overall Minnesota is faster and is making more crisp passes than Cornell rather than the affect of the ice.

Main affect of large ice would be McKee being out of position but that is not happening at all.

OT ... Minny had a flurry at the end, but overall sounds like an even third.  I guess if before the game you gave me a chance to go to OT on Minny's home ice, I would have taken it.

Given how clutch some of our guys have been all year and how well Mckee is playing, we have a great shot.

If we are somehow able to pull this off (not woofing), it will rank as one of the greatest CU wins of all time.

I'm not talking about anybody dominating anybody.   I'm talking about a Cornell team that is approaching this game like a  boxer who is facing a bigger, hard-punching opponent.   Keep em at arm's length and take your jabs wherever possible.   Even when UofM has possession, Cornell is keeping things under control.  OT has started.

I haven't bashed obyrne at all this year (being out of town) but as it happend live, i said NO NO NO as he went to hold the puck with noone near him..ask my TV I was screaming at it.

Someone else let their man loose though for that guy to get the pass and shot.  McKee great 1st save, no chance on rebound.

And FWIW, even the announcers pointed out on the replay that for the first goal, Obyrne lost his man and that's the man that got the pass for the shot.

Just plain facts...I'm not for or against obyrne and i'm sure he wont make those two mistakes again....but thats how it went down today

The problem with O'Byrne is, he probably will make the same mistake again, sorry to say.

I've not followed it closely enough to know.  I'd think though that it's got to really sink into your head all summer now.

Just so everybody knows, I'm not dissin' the kid because I think he's a goon on skates, (in fact I don't really mean to diss him at all), I'm sure he, like the rest of the team, is a great guy... I just hope he learns from his mistakes this year and if it takes a long summmer, he'll be all the better player for it.

I'll tell you what frosted me totally during the game wiith Minnie, and that was the ridiculous amount of announcer time and camera time devoted to the MINNIE SIEVE's peroxide parents !!!

How come they didn't show McKee's parents!!!!   I'm SURE they were THERE!!!!

BADDDDDDDDDDDDDD ANNOUNCERS!!!!

I hope McKee wins the Hobey, but I think not making the FF, may hurt his chances (even though the decision "supposedly" has already been made)

But Briggs's parents had to travel a lot (since their other son was playing in Amherst with BSU).  It's not like anyone's following McKee around from Texas or anything. ::rolleyes::

I thought the other briggs son was on the mercyhurst lakers, and thus they were doing the worcester-minneapolis commute.

i'm pretty sure the graphic they put up indicated worcester. but i wouldn't be surprised if the tv announcers got that wrong.

No I'm sure it was me.  I was going from memory and just recalled that it was one of the AQs.
