[EDIT] Apparently, this news has changed since the time I posted the original headline. Hirsch is back with the team, though was hospitalized earlier in the week.
I guess it still would not be funny to call him a nut case or nut job.
According to reports on USCHO, this was superceded by Hirsch skating with the team later in the week. His status for the weekend is undecided.
Look again...this story is from today. He apparently had a breakdown after practicing yesterday and is back in the hospital.
EDIT: I could have sworn that it was different when I first checked the link and it said he was in the hospital today...maybe I'm just losing my mind waiting for hockey this weekend :)
My posting was taken from around noon time today, so I think this is new news. However, it was not mentioned on CSTV.com's home page, even though I found the news by searching news.google.com. ::screwy::
USCHO had an article as well saying he was back in the hospital. However, it seems to have been pulled. Perhaps people were taking old information as new again, or perhaps some sources were called into question.
you're definitely not losing it ... the story that Fred posted from USCHO on the other thread has since been edited with similar wording to the link above. the previous story --did-- make mention that he had checked back in to a hospital and would likely not play this weekend.

I wish for the best for hirch's recovery but it wouldnt be the worse thing if he couldnt play this weekend! ::nut::
Most people are sounding respectful of a serious personal problem, but can we vow not to chant at all about the guy? This is a very serious crisis for him, one that could mean huge problems for the rest of his life. It's wrong to use it as material. If he had cancer, you never would pick on him for that. Mental illness is a disease, too, and it's wrong to pick on someone for being sick.

Short answer, if he's playing, you've got to wonder if he really had a breakdown. What idiot doctor would send him back into the line of fire for another breakdown? Yes, if hockey makes you the most happy, then you do it in a private setting. Any doctor that sends that kid out to play hockey in front of tens of thousands of people (in person and on tv) is not looking out for the best interest of the kid, and I can't imagine the Gophers have trouble finding good doctors. He's not a senior, it's not his last chance of playing college hockey. If he doesn't play, no one is going to say anything anyways...and I promise, I won't taunt my tv regardless! :-P
It's all good, people! He'll figure this out, everyone will move on, some faithful will call out phone numbers, others will frown. I think most can agree: Here's to hoping Minnesota loses so the Mooch truly becomes neutral ice!

[/quote]I have to admit I don't like the term dismissed. I would hope if it was for medical reasons they would say something like he left for personal reasons. I guess we may never know, but I hope they didn't dismiss him for medical reasons.

Don Lucia had already suspended Hirsch for a total of five games this season for various misdeeds (falling behind in his coursework, being late to a team meeting, and coasting through practice). Apparently, his somnambulant performance against Alabama-Huntsville was the straw that broke the camel's back. Although Hirsch's behavior may well be related his his ailment, I think that his conduct warranted his dismissal. Don Lucia had seemed patient and understanding with Hirsch's situation and recovery since the 2004 WCHA semifinal.

Yes, the additional background really does help. I had the same reaction as Jim to the rather curt official announcement.
