Title: Sign ideas
Post by: avh0307 on March 16, 2005, 07:30:45 PM
Anyone have any good ideas for signs in Albany?  Any good Vermont goons to make fun of?  Thanks for suggestions!! :-)

vermont goons...
let's see...elephant walk to start off with.
http://www.muttonbone.com/ might also be appropriate for them. this was floating around section B their first full season after the hazing, please refer to http://www.uscho.com/news/1999/12/11_000848.php for anyone who doesn't remember, or maybe just want to relive the memories.
and then of course, anything witty in regards to leaving the ecac...maybe a large "see ya!...you goons!" sign in general

"See ya Vermont!  You Goon!" is a sign I've made but I'm not sure if I'm going to bring it.  I'd rather bring Pro-Cornell signs like 2003.

Print up signs that say "Go Vermont" with a bunch of elephants walking on it.  Ignorant UVM people will think it's pro-UVM, neutral people will be befuddled, but all in the know will kow what it means.  But whatever it is, you have to have some "elephant walk" reference.

I'm printing out very large pictures of elephants (MS Word clip art).  I'll be in Section 115... look for the sign!!!  French Rage, thanks for the idea!

well, there's "Elephant Walk Home"

also, "ecac rejects" (though they're the ones who chose to leave, so that's a bit hazy)

i was thinking about "Pussy Cats" but didn't know the level of appropriateness

i plan to have my "Lynah Middle East" sign for the weekend, and a large hyphen on a poster as well.

for the lynah east game, the girlfriend made a "we had sex in high school"/"you had your hand in high school" doublesided sign which we never ended up bringing out due to the many children around us (and the loss), and unfortunately made its way into the trash can after we left the game

'ack and that group should def. bring the "heimlich/choking" sign that they had for the harvard home game this year. definitely one of the best signs i've ever seen.

There was once a sign at Placid that said "Hey St. Lawrence, if you can spell 'safety school,' we might let you in."   It got torn down, drawing the retaliatory destruction of an SLU sign that apparently one of the players' moms had made.   Someone handed me a piece of that SLU sign after they tore it down, and I have it to this day!

Yeah I get it so by your definition, since cornell is the least penalized team in the league (how did THAT happen....lol) every other team are goons?

Fact is that taking a lot of penalties does not automatically make you a "goon"...one needs to consider the type of penalties taken.

Maybe you should make your signs say "Undisciplined"...that's likely to be more accurate and also more befitting your "Ivy" education...lol

Rich, the fact that all other teams are Goons is simply because we are cornell fans, therefor we have a biased opinion. it is my observation that you seem to think lowly of our team, maybe because you are a clarkson fan?

Your observation is incorrect.  I have a lot of respect for the team which plays hard, smart, disciplined hockey.  That's how I believe the game should be played and how I coach youngsters to play.  It's how Clarkson always played until a few seasons ago.

It's the attitude of many of the cornell fans I "think lowly of".

I actually think this is just a case of the reference being lost in translation.  Rich, the "See ya, Vermont...you goon!" is just a reference to the Lynah cheer as an opposing skater is being sent to the penalty box:  "Aahhhhhh....SEE YA!!  You Goon!"  We'd say that if the great-grandson of Lady Bing was sent to the box.

[Q]Maybe you should make your signs say "Undisciplined"...that's likely to be more accurate and also more befitting your "Ivy" education...lol[/q]

I was under the impression that "lol" was used as a response for humor.  Not to point out how clever one thinks one is being.

Next thing you know RichS will be informing us that many goals are actually not the opposing goaltenders fault, that a sieve is usually metallic and a goalie is not and therefore a goalie cannot be a sieve, and that we must all be biased, inconsiderate Cornell fans for implying such offensive things.

You go after goon and not the elephants?  Geez.

Rich, it's a CHEER that we do at Lynah.  You've been around a lot longer than me...

Anyways, the stat is not number of penalties, it is penalty in minutes.

Here's another stat for ya:
Clarkson 170 penalties 402 minutes 2.364 minutes/penalty
Princeton 136 316 2.324
Dartmouth 142 328 2.310
Union 160 358 2.238
SLU 158 349 2.209
Vermont 165 361 2.187
RPI 154 334 2.169
Cornell 139 300 2.158
Harvard 157 338 2.153
Yale 186 391 2.102
Brown 152 315 2.072
Colgate 152 307 2.020

Infer what you will.

A lot of penalties doesn't always mean "undisciplined"...it also can mean "unable to defend"...

Bottom Line: Is Vermont a bunch of John Chaney's Goons?  No.  But it works well for a sign, meshes with a cheer, points out Vermont takes a lot of penalties, and makes me smile.

Rich, I like having you around here.  Are you entertained yet?  ;-)

What about that quote coach Schaffer had shortly after the announcement of the move, something along the lines of them automatically moving up 2 places, from 12th to 10th (though they've actually had a good season).

Bend it like Becker
Becker is a pecker (eh, cheer material)

Driver drives the bus (maybe a better cheer than sign)

Fallon = Beaver reject (he's from Bemidji)
Fallon's GAA > his GPA

FEMenella

We're spending four years on the Hill, your Hill is spending four years on the bench
Cornell = 4 years on THE hill
UVM's Hill = 4 years on the bench
Don't worry Hill, lots of people have no talent
(always fun to pick on the 3rd strings)

Lutz is a klutz (again, probably a better cheer than sign)

For Macaulay either a Home Alone reference or a "Findlay club team > Vermont DI" sign

Save a tree, PLANT a Catamount
Go Red, PLANT the Catamounts

Wicked Smaht
Wicked Smart
Smart at UVM, oh the irony

Myers, who's your daddy? (he's from south boston)

i didn't see the sign, but that's pretty amusing

i remember a harvard sign incident with a small harvard contingent with nike "go harvard" signs. cornell people took them and added "home" to say "go home harvard." moderate violent confrontation ensued.

We had a similar incident with Providence in '81.

The Providence fans were directly opposite us at the Gahden.  They had a big sign running along the upper deck that said "Go Friars, Beat Cornell".   I took a piece of cardboard I had for impromptu signs, wrote "Off" on it in big block letters, and went up there and hung it over the word Cornell.

It didn't last long, but the cheer from the Faithful was priceless.
