Title: XMI Webcast for the playoffs
Post by: KP '06 on March 05, 2005, 08:26:29 PM
Not sure how many people noticed this yet:
http://www.xmievents.com/events/cornell/index.html

XMI is bumping the price up to $9.95 per game for the ECAC quarterfinals. :-(
Aren't these the games that Cornell broadcasted for free last year?

Granted, I'll pay it, but I'm not too stoked to pay twice as much for the same marginal product.

What about season passes, do they still apply?

What XMI is doing is crap.

They are not offering a better product and charging more!

Use the link below for information on where to send a note.  I've already sent mine.

Its fair to be pissed, but its not about the product being better - its about the demand being higher.

Not more people maybe, but more interest per person. Extortion? Maybe? Capitalism? Yup. Often they're one in the same. Feel free to complain, of course.

you do realize that Cornell is paying them several hundred a game to broadcast the games...  and dont kid yourself into thinking the demand went up.  2 people bought the season pass and a couple dozen on a per game basis..
Title: Re: XMI Webcast for the playoffs

funny thing is Cornell could produce the games free for people for less than they pay to have it done for them..

Where do you get your information from? I bought the season pass and I feel it was well worth it (even if the previous product was much more desirable becuase it included achived games). Are you saying that only one other person in the whole world bought the season pass? I find that hard to believe.

It's fine to complain if you must, but realize that XMI isn't in the black on this whether Cornell underwrites it or not.  At least they aren't in the black in the way that it's taught in B School.

How many here on the forum hope to open a college sports webcasting business?

I agree that it would be better to do this with either volunteer talent or for the school to do it, but....my point in posting is that the people who bitch at XMI in a polite manner will likely get a polite response.

I'm guessing not, since when I follow the link to look for a test video and log in with the username and password that has the subscription, I go to a page that says "You will be charged $9.95 to Stream Cornell One Game - Friday for 20 Hours"

I, too.

But I'm planning to skip this weekend's webcast.  Don't care about the ten bucks per game.  Care about the continued shafting of the Faithful by the dopes in Athletics.
::pissed::

The Colgate game Friday is on Time Warner #26.

On a related note, just saw a banner floating across the TV screen saying Empire Sports is folding its tent at midnight tonight.

I got my information from the technical staff at XMi and the Assist AD at cornell who was trouble shooting some issues that I noted to them about the service.. Whether they made it up I dont know.  I was told that 2 people signed up for the year long service before the season started that was supposed to include archived games..  I'm not sure how XMI coudnt be  making money on the service.. they already have the infrastuture in place for several years.  there is really only a few costs.. 1) the cost of sending people to do the game and 2) the cost of pushing the data out over the net.  the equipment and software is cheap. if nothing else i would think the $2-300 a game would cover the bodies they send on sight.  the feed from cornell back to their site is covered by cornell.  if they come up with 20-30 people a game at $5 thats another couple hundred..  the connection costs to the internet is the only variable..  BUT CU could do it cheaper themselves without a doubt.. they already have excess capacity to the internet and they could probably get people to film for free..

The lack of Sabres games to broadcast didn't help either. :`(

Now lets see, it kinda negates the free aspect, but if say they'd fly me to ithaca from florida every home weekend and let me into the games for free... i'd do it without a second thought ;). Never have taped a hockey game before, but i have done a fair number of basketball games (every home basketball game (boys & girls) + playoffs all 4 years of high school). Last two years not only did i tape, i also did hte play by play.B-]

now if only cornell would cough up a few plane tickets.

I bit the bullet and paid for the first playoff game at $5.

I tried the test link provided throuh registering as suggested and just got an unavilable server error. Not very reassuring. Did anyone get anything different? Got URL?

If only somebody here on eLynah had the equipment, software and skills to do it for free, or better yet, athletics could *hire* on an hourly basis to do it... alas, what are the chances of that.

I couldn't get the test file to load, either.
Not too worried. I've watched a couple games from here (West Coast over a cable connection) and the times when they actually got around to streaming a game, I haven't had any major issues.

I'm getting SLU as well.  Thought it might be because that was the last regular-season game I was able to watch.  Nice to watch the Moulson goal, though.  Can't believe he threaded that needle.

i think they are using the slu broadcast as a test feed.  the real feed will probably kick on at 6:30.

OK - just a little paranoid...

Thanks!

In case anyone else wants to see the goal, it's about 2 hrs 18 minutes into the broadcast.  I can't believe how open they left Moulson - not like he's exactly an unknown threat!

Title: Audio for tonight?
Post by: Big Red Colonel on March 11, 2005, 06:33:08 PM
Hey folks,

I'm a total newbie about this internet audio stuff.  I purchased a gamepass from RealNetworks so I can listen to the game, but when I click on the link for "Listen" from the CBR homepage I get the following:

[Q]"Want to enjoy College Sports Pass content?
The RealPlayer version we have detected on your computer is too old to use with College Sports Pass. You can download the newest version of the RealPlayer for FREE by clicking the button below.

Upgrade now to to play your exclusive content* "[/Q]

However, I've already got the newest version.  Have any of you run into this problem?

Cheers,
Mike

A minute ago I was switched from relatively high-quality archive feed of the SLU game to ridiculously low quality (56Kbps) live video.  I paid $5 to watch a postage-stamp-sized view of blurry crap?!

People are still getting the SLU feed instead of the Cornell one, right?   Unless Marsh has replaced Roll as Clarkson's coach...  ::uhoh::

Robb,

No, the audio cut out a minute or two ago (at least for me), and hasn't come back..there was some weird static when it cut out that makes me think it's some sort of physical connection issue, maybe at lynah?

I opened the feed halfway through the 1st period, and it started right up at 323Kbps ... so the problem isn't a lack of bandwidth on XMI's side. I'll bet they're doing something else wrong, though, if so many people are having a problem.
