Title: [OT] Miracle on Ice..on ESPN now.
Post by: DisplacedCornellian on February 20, 2005, 08:32:56 PM
The 1980 Olympic Hockey game between the U.S. and the U.S.S.R. is on ESPN right now (8:30 p.m.).

First time I'd ever seen the original game (as opposed to the movie version).  Even Jessica enjoyed it and marveled at the absurdity of the Americans' win.

My program guide says that the USA/USSR game will be on ESPN Classic tomorrow evening from 8:00-10:30, and then again from 11:30-2:00.  Also the Finland game on Thursday evening from 8:00-10:00.

Buying the rights might have put the price point for the DVD above what people tend to want to pay for movies.

Although it's a Disney movie, and Disney owns ABC.

[q]Although it's a Disney movie, and Disney owns ABC.[/q]Yeah, that was my thought... Disney already owned the footage so rights shouldn't have been an issue.  Now maybe the IOC has some claim to the footage as well which would require a payout to allow this.  I don't know.

There's no reason the Team USA run of games from the 1980 Olympics couldn't be given the DVD boxed set treatment, at least no reason that I know of.  There is a lot of interest, I think, despite the NHL apathy of 2005.  The broadcast that ESPN showed was of terrific quality compared to the bootlegged copies of the USSR and Finland games I own.  There have been plenty of interviews, features, reunions, etc. that could make up a very nice extra-features section.

The 1972 USSR-Canada Summit Series has been given proper treatment, and full, unedited games are available as a DVD boxed set.  Reasonably priced in the $30-$40 CDN range, they have eight games and bonus features on 4 DVDs.  Team USA played seven games in the 1980 Olympics, and footage of the MSG exhibition vs. USSR (if footage exists) could be added.

See Summit Series DVD details here: http://www.1972summitseries.com/videos.html

I didn't know the 1972 series made it to DVD.  In that case maybe Disney didn't want to include footage on the Miracle DVD because they eventually want to release the 1980 Olympic footage on a separate set.
