Title: [OT] Beanpot consolation, final
Post by: billhoward on February 14, 2005, 05:00:55 PM
Harvard-BC is on gametracker at 5pm EST 2/14. http://www.uscho.com/schedules/?type=d1 Root for the Cantabs. Ivy pride and all. Plus we want BC to drop in the polls.

Northeastern-BU Beanpot final is 8pm on NESN and on satellite DirecTV 623, Dish Network on channel 434. (And those copycat Huskies are taking over the Park Avenue Country Club in NYC to watch it.) May as well root for Northeastern because they're underdogs, because they're the whoever-BU-is-playing-this-week team, and because BU's rink is newer and nicer (and bigger) than ours.

Consolation game
After 1: BC 0, Grumet-Morris (with help from various and sundry Harvard seconds) 0
After 2: BC 3, Harvard 0 (and outshooting Harvard 15-3 or 18-3)
Final: BC 4, Harvard 1

Championship:
After 1: BU 2, Northeastern 0 (SHG, PPG)
After 2: BU 2, Northeastern 1
Final: BU 3, Northeastern 2 (OT)

...and because my wife's an NU grad. :-)

Last week Comcast picked up the NESN high-definition broadcast on INHD2, and it was great to watch.

I can't believe I'm listening to this game. I wish these announcers would get off hypen's jock a little bit. "Another beautiful save by Grumet-Morris. An UNBELIEVABLE save by Grumet-Morris. Grumet-Morris makes another incredible save! Grumet-Morris is the greatest goaltender in the history of the game." It makes me appreciate Cornell's recent succession of announcers.

Harvard missed out on 2 powerplay opportunities in the first 10 minutes of the game.

For me Gametracker still lists it as 20:00 to play in the first, no game details whatsoever other than goalies.  Anybody else?

Even the scores "ticker" at the top of Gametracker has the current score and time elapsed for the game, but the "20:00" in the main area doesn't change.  And I can't listen where I am.  Ah, well.

BC ppg, 1-0.

During the intermission, a Harvard announcer referred to them as "BCU." ::rolleyes::

It is really necessarily to refer to him a "Dov Grummet-Morris" EVERY SINGLE TIME they refer to him?
Title: Re: [OT] Beanpot consolation, final
Post by: billhoward on February 14, 2005, 06:04:00 PM
You're right: WHRB really is Radio Dov Ninety-Five-Point-Three. I think the only time I heard Noah Welch's name mentioned is when he went off for that penalty at the end of the first.

More traditional Harvard students refer to him as "D*v Grumet-Morris"

Announcer one: "Goal, BC! It's three to nothing."

Announcer two: "That's got to hurt if you're a Harvard fan."

Well, yes.

I know it's unfair to keep track of everything dumb announcers say when a game gets out of hand. But it's also so much fun.

They also claimed that Matti is not a big game goaltender. Against us or not, win or not, double OT in the regional final with only 1 goal allowed until the last second, seems to be some good big game qualifications to me.

Shut out OSU the day before, too.  One goal through seven periods before Matt ended it early in the eighth.

BTW, talked with one of the McRaes--couldn't tell which--at Yale Saturday night.  They're very happy in med school.

Not if you're a Cornell fan.  Look at the PWR.  Harvard win can flip the Cornell comparison.  Since we have NO chance of catching BC under any reasonable set of circumstances we want BC to win because:

- PWR #6 is a virtual lock for eastern ice
- PWR #7 is good for eastern ice if BC is #2
- BC will have a hard time catching DU so a strong BC finish locks them for #2

Got it guys?

After watching the Beanpot title game: Wouldn't it be nice if each night there were two or three games - I was about to clarify and say college not pro games, but that's not necessary this season - you could get? And maybe a half dozen on key weekends? That is one advantage satellite seems to have - more pickup of out of region sports networks. Eg DirecTV has NESN which had the Beanpot, but not cable in our area. But I think it's more a matter of will to do it, not bandwidth.

And for those who love minor league hockey, we can hope for away broadcasts of our team's games sometime in the next decade.

Post by: Will on February 15, 2005, 09:37:24 AM
In terms of having college hockey games each night of the week, that'd be difficult to pull off, mainly because you have to remember that these guys are (supposed to be) students first and foremost.  Most games take place on the weekends because then they don't have to worry about getting to class the next day after a potentially long distance road trip.
Title: Re: [OT] Beanpot consolation, final
Post by: billhoward on February 15, 2005, 09:45:01 AM
Ah, good point, and I realized it once I hit the Post button. I mean, for every night there's a bunch of college hockey games played (not every night of the week), it woiuld be great to have a selection of games to watch ... leading up to the point in five, ten years when every game is available to everyone over satellite, cable TV, or high-quality Webcast. And then also for Lehigh and Iowa wrestling, if that's youir thing. The Cornell-Penn basketball game of last Saturday was on CN8, a Jersey-area cable channel, I believe; it woiuld have been nice if that had been picked up on an unused satellite channel.

Sports Illustrated noted last fall how the colleges are screwing up student-athletes' lives by playing those Tuesday and Wednesday night games, all in order to get Mississippi Delta State national exposure on ESPN2. I believe there was a promo for "[~]17 Straight Nights of College Football." Good for the fan, good for Vegas, not so good for the students.

Well, Hyphen is one of the best in college hockey, at least statistically and he's a large part of their success this season.  And they are students (I believe), so they naturally have an added affinity for their goalie.
