Title: Ejections for foul language at Yost
Post by: dbilmes on February 01, 2005, 08:50:37 PM
Here is a story about efforts at Michigan to crack down on bad language, etc. at Yost. They're threatening to eject fans who use profanity, especially during the "see-ya" penalty cheer. Have there been recent (this year) problems at Lynah with people being ejected (besides for throwing fish)?

This is essentially what Mike Schafer has been saying but with slgihtly different words:

>>> "Our students are too creative, and they're too smart to let this thing hurt our program," Berenson said. "And if they don't care about our program then they'll continue what they're doing."

I don't like censorship.  That being said, vulgar language really isn't necessary in order to properly taunt the other team.  I think I do a fairly decent job of taunting opposing goalies without using, um, "ejectionable" words.

"I seen it!"  You do a real good job, Will.  I enjoy watching the young kids in E while they watch you--one day they'll gain confidence.

On one hand you can probly avoid profanity, on the other hand let's not kid ourselves, kids have probly heard it all already.  It's like the lady who sued Walmart because a curse-word got through on a CD that was supposed to be profanity free; like the kid wont hear it elsewhere.

I must agree that the use of profanity can give off the appearance of being uncreative, goonish, and even childish. I've heard the preseason speech (quite some time ago) about how the language of the Faithful has deterred some recruits from signing on with the Big Red. Fans should actually think about the potential injury it could cause their team along these lines, and self-adjust their cheers accordingly.

But getting ejected from a game for something you say that does not provoke violent situations (something other than "Fire", which could lead to mass hysteria, or bitter words that lead to brawls among the fans themselves) seems a bit ludicrous and against free speech. I'm surprised that hasn't been brought up before on a liberal college campus.

Oh, it has.  Many, many times over.  Mostly in the predecessor to eLynah Forum, but it comes up at least once a year: http://elf.elynah.com/read.php?1,27562
Bascially, the gist is that Cornell Hockey games take place in a private venue.  The University reserves the right to eject you for any reason whatsoever.  It's printed on your ticket.

Even this Michigan thread/story is recycled: http://elf.elynah.com/read.php?1,26345

Hate to do this, Rich (and I know you're just summarizing the gist of past threads anyway), but this falls under that category of "oft-repeated, but misleading (if not incorrect)" conclusions on elynah.  The University can "reserve" whatever the hell it wants and print it on one's ticket, but that doesn't make it word-of-God or enforceable.  While this practice covers the University's ass when it comes to ejecting fish-throwers or obscenity-utterers, there are obviously situations out of which they can't contract themselves (off the top of my head, they can't reserve the right to confiscate kidneys during second intermission or eject racial minorities after any hat trick).

I can just see it now: Kidney Donation Night at Lynah!  It'll be a hit!

It's probably accurate to say that the Athletic Dept. can eject you from a game for any pretext that the law doesn't prohibit.  Ejecting racial minorities would violate federal statutes.  Ejecting those who curse does not.  There is no right to free speech (by statute or Constitution) in a private venue that is not a public forum, even if the instiitution is a government entity (which I'm never sure whether our hybrid, half-state Alma Mater qualifies as or not).

Not to say that fans and students can't exercise their free speech rights elsewhere to protest the standards that the AD has set.

Free speech has limits.  I think it's safe to say the Supreme Court isn't going to step in and enjoin Athletics from ejecting fans from Lynah for dropping f-bombs.

And here I thought it was a reference to fish eggs...
