Title: BU's new rink
Post by: dsr11 on January 04, 2005, 07:21:17 AM
While there has been a lot of discussion here about a new Lynah, BU's new barn opened last night.  Here is an article from the Boston Globe, looks like a pretty sweet rink.

http://www.boston.com/sports/articles/2005/01/04/home_at_last/

I'm sure there is more info somewhere on the web, but I'll leave the googling as an exercise to the reader ;-)

I was there last night. Amazingly sweet place. It holds something like 6800 now but they did a great job at making the incline of the rows good enough such that most every seat is still very close to the ice (though not nearly as close as at Lynah). Lots of concessions, beautiful new scoreboard with 4 sided video feed of the game (I could finally see what was going on in the near corner!)

While the stands were beautiful, they were having lots of glass troubles on the ice with the connectors between the panes popping off quite often, once causing a 10 minute delay.

On the whole...a beautiful new arena, but as you get with ne arenas, little character.

I'd still take lynah anyday

No one answered the most important question.  Did the beer sales transfer to the new building?

Does anyone know how BU is able to sell beer at hockey games when no one else can?

yup...and not bad at 4.50 a bud. And I was wondering that same thing myself

And only $5.50 for "premium" beers, which include Red Hook and Amber Bock.  (I object to Michelob products on philosophical grounds, but I was glad to have some drinkable beer.)

The shrink-wrap may still be on the arena, but last night at least it was rocking.  We were at the end opposite the student section, and it was impressive to see how often they started cheers, which did filter around the sides of the rink.  It was lame to have piped-in music during the TV timeouts and all those silly contests.  I guess I'd say if you're going to replace a piece of history with a new facility, this is about as well as it can be done.  I still hope it never happens to Lynah, though.

BRI, did you wear Cornell stuff to the game?  The UNH fans I was sitting with were sure I was the only one who yelled RED during the national anthem (both nights).  And I made lots of friends wearing my SCREW BU shirt to T's after the game. :-D

Haha I always listen to hear if there's one "Red!" out there during the anthem. I'm just next to the student section and was in one of those Lynah Faithful T-shirts. Didn't hear anything from anyone but I doubt 19 yr old BU fans know what a Lynah is. I'm just happy to be back goin to collegiate hockey games on a regular basis. It definitely pumped me up for Saturday's game at Lynah East

Did you get one of the free T-shirts last night?  I'm thinking they'd be appropriate to wear to Lynah East. :-}

They packed them into these puck-sized shrink wrapped things that were rock solid (I imagined what a bad idea it would be to give these out before a ranger/islander game ). It said something like find your inner dog or something.

I do say it worked well as an umbrella on the way out

Look at the back of the shirt.

How do we get Lynah to start serving Beer?  I can only consumer so much concealed bourbon before having to vomit in the middle of the 3rd period.

For those of us who don't have the shirt and thus can't look at the back of it, are you going to tell us what it says?  :-P

does anyone else think it odd that the name of the new arena is that of an athlete that played none of the sports that will be contested there? as far as i know is Harry Agganis was an amazing football/baseball player but this may be due my limited knowledge of the subject and lack of research (too lazy) ... does anyone have any ideas as to why they chose to name the new arena in his honor?

I haven't unwrapped mine, but I'm pretty sure they said "This is our house" on the back.  (And the front was "Unleash your inner dog" I believe.)

The one thing I'm annoyed about is that I forgot to buy a program last night (having bought one Sunday and only realized midway thru the game that they were different).

It's better than naming the arena after some rich alum's daughter...no complaints naming it after an influential, athletic BU alum.

How about this?

"Because it will be a community focal point, we are proud to name the arena for Harry Agganis. Harry was a BU legend not only for his talent and achievement in sports, but also for his character and loyalty to his family and community."

Jim Lynah played football at Cornell.  Don't think he played hockey.  He was named AD in the 30s.

But he got the rink named after him for his work as an administrator, didn't he?

Right - according to Wodon's Cornell Hockey book that I got for Christmas, Carpenter (same guy as the engineering library) ponied up the $$$, but didn't want it named for himself, so he asked that it be named for Lynah.

The NCAA only bans alcohol sales at NCAA Championship events (Regionals, Frozen Four, etc.)  I assume the ECAC Championship is included in this since there weren't any beer sales in Albany.  Unless it's a dry campus, schools can sell alcohol if they choose for regular season games.

That sounds about right.  As I understand it, any school could theoretically sell beer at a campus event, but you need a liquor license for the venue.  I'd guess that the expense involved in that dissuades most venues.

This is true...the ID'ing on lines took FOREVER and made them very long. Not that I would know b/c I'm out of state and under 25 so obviously I can't be trusted to drink at sporting or concert events in Mass

If you're here often enough, you could get one of those liquor IDs.  (I take it you don't have a passport.)  But it is dumb that 21 doesn't mean 21.

I've heard that BU can serve beer due to a "grandfather clause."  Are there really other schools that do so?

I know I was very surprised when they had beer at the Cornell/Yale game that was played at the New Haven Coliseum several years ago.

Speaking of asinine Massachusetts law regarding serving alcohol, I got negged at a bar in Cambridge last night because my driver's license is expired.*  As if I magically stopped being 27 when that happened.  Jeez, I was 25 when the damn thing was issued.  But never mind, who needs common sense?  ::rolleyes::

* Yes, I know, that part is my fault but when you're in the city and you don't own a car and you drive rarely and your license expires during the middle of exams, you tend to forget these things.

And airlines won't accept an expired passport as proof of identification. (When you get a new one they send the old one back with a hole cut in it. But it's still you.

And NJ will not issue you an ID card in addition to your driver's license; the idea being that you should leave your license in your wallet at all times and use the ID for things like airlines and bars ... because if you get to Denver on a business trip and try to renat a car at Hertz, you are hosed if that license is back at the gate in Boston.

I would assume that an expired license is unacceptable identification in most states, not just Taxachussetts.  I know the same thing has happened to me in Ithaca.  Not an unreasonable rule considering how many people (at least used to) give away their old licenses to younger siblings (thus the addition of under 21 logos on licenses).  A pain in the ass isometimes, but not assinine.

And Lone Star beer.  But the Red Line was a better place to drink, with (among others) Leffe on draft and Magners in imperial pint bottles.  Even if they wouldn't make a car bomb and had to be told how to do lemon drops.

I remember going to a CU-SU lax game at the Carrier Dome in 1983 or 84 and being pleasantly surprised that beer was sold there.

Shoot, I might increase my giving if I could buy beer at Lynah or Schoellkopf.  How about a gift threshold that allows you to imbibe at sporting events?  It's the least the university can do.:-P
